  • whats the song at 47????

  • Where's the video where he has stuff written on his toms and snare?

  • What song is Stewart playing?

  • stew is 1 of THE ALL TIME GREATS, HANDS DOWN! he's a tru innovator thru n thru..........NUFF SAID.

  • why is the "great sounding snare" triggered?

  • @hellohiholaify :S must be for those ecos he like ! or effect adding on console!?

  • @hellohiholaify

I don't know about the trigger I think it's for the effects. But it is an AWESOME!! snare drum. I own one. It's the best I ever have owned to. It's the only one I ever use now out of all three of my snares!!

  • travis is nothing i repeat nothing on stewart copeland he is just a skate boy who drums in time and loud but has zero personality and predictable breaks, like he just marched out of a drum corps into a pair of hipster jeans and piercings.

Im a drummer and i could out class travis on the drums in style ,technique and free form grooves. However saying all that he is a pop drummer and does it well within what he can do comfortably

  • what about the SIGNATURE ride?

  • a trigger on his snare... =S

  • While I appreciate the walk-thru of the kit, this is hardly "an exact copy" of his 1983 kit and if anyone should know that, I would expect it to be his drum tech.

  • I love Stewart Copeland's drumming.

  • Best kick drum sound ever.

  • Hey Drum Doctor.... thanks for this.... You've backlined kits for me several times in Los Angeles... Thanks!

  • @patton303

That'll be Ross Garfield, I'm from the UK!

  • @thedrumdoctor

    oh...lol.... gotcha... well hello anyway... : )

  • I love splash cymbals. I knew Gene Krupa made them part of the drum set to begin with, but I didn't know Copeland made it part of the modern drum set. Thanks Stewart!

  • Most underratted drummer ever

  • @777jackpot1 lol wat?...many ppl know of copeland...wat r u talking about

  • @777jackpot1 Who underrated him? He's one of the greats.

  • Stewart, please loose the gloves and the headband.

  • Cool! I traded my North drums for a set of Imperialstars back in 1978 mainly because Stewart was playing them. He had that set of orange Imp's that I bet Tama sold a shitload of those thanks to Stewart! I still have my Imperialstars along with several vintage Superstars and i have a set of maple Starclassics too. Obviously, I've been a bit of a brand whore for the past 30-some years! TAMA ROCKS!!!

  • That snare is fucking sick.

  • I agree with Scotty A328 Steve did not start the whole splash thing. He uses small hats because it funkier I mean everyone knows that. Secondly he plays reggae drums all that high hat stuff skips what have you come from raggae drumming. There are lots of reggae drummer who play that who dont really get the credit they deserve. And also drummer from a lot of world music. But obviosly Steve is fantastic and Roxanne stands out

  • i know alex van halen uses Octobons

  • Oh yeah, and there's a blue ride cymbal too ;-)

  • Its hilarious how Jeff payed no attention to the blue ride.

  • Woah! Blue ride cymbal

  • YEAH COPELAND MY FAVORITE

  • fuck!! he keeps thinkin everythin is unique to his kit and he basically invented/reintroduced the things to the whole freakin wirld, like octobans and splash cymbals!!!!!!!! he did not!!!!!

  • he was the first drummer to have octobans. in fact even if he wasnt the first hes one of the only guys i know that has one. and yea i guess a lot of guys had splash cymbals thats not very unique

  • Octobons

  • fuck off cunt

  • u are a complete wanker u havent seen me p[lay drums so piss off cocksucker i know a good drummer when i see one

  • is that so mate, than how can you say barker is better than copeland, copeland will wipe the floor with barker, bark can only hit drums hard stewart can play every style there is

  • That's a pretty fitting username. The idea that TB is better than Stewart Copland, who was on the cover of Modern Drummer's Drum Gods (issue 2), is pretty funny. You're "barking" up the wrong tree dude. Travis Barker is a better drummer than Avril Lavigne, and that's about it. He's not even better than me.

  • TB is a good drummer, just not as good as everyone says he is. the resson everyone thniks he is the best is because he is fast. somtimes his fills are samey and boring

  • Lol I don't even remember commenting on this video. I was pretty pissed because I thought you meant Terry Bozzio then I looked at the other comments XD Barker's ok, but yeah he seems to have a bit of an inflated head, and most definitely his fans do. Dave Grohl is the master of hitting hard. He does it so wonderfully and it fit perfectly with Nirvana. Travis seems to just be trying to show off. Same with Andy Morley. You play fast and hard and you're some kind of punk legend.

  • The Paiste sound melds perfectly with Copeland's playing style ,and that blue bell ride is a true work of art. There's only one Paiste

  • I agree hes one of the most underrated drummers in the world-Stewart,I mean. He's up there with Neil Peart,Bonham,Ian Paice,Artimus Pyle,Ginger Baker,Tony Thompson, and pretty much thats all I can really think of now.Thersd plenty more good ones I might of forgotten that belong in Stewart's league though

  • keith moon

  • Is he using Evans heads, anyone know out there? Jeff?

  • i think there remo actually google it

  • awesome!!

  • Daym!!!! LOOK AT THAT RIDE!~!!!!!

  • I know man....it's BEAUTIFUL!

  • i like the way he says its his personal rhythm that makes the drumset

  • those splashes are warped as hell man

  • I love all of his old titan and road pro stands!

  • what a great snare...and then he put trigger on it!he could take stagg snare and done same thing...shit

  • i hate those fucking triggers ..i did a gig a few weeks ago and the guy made me use the ddrum triggers ... they were awful .

  • i think its a normal acoustic snare mic'ed up as usual, but a trigger that triggers a hand clap sound or a tiny delay...or something to make the back beat a bt fiercer. its defo not a complete synthetic sound

  • Triggers aren't awful. It's the sound modules that usually are.

  • He uses that for effects, like echo

  • The mic is also there. The trigger is surely used to trigger effects.

  • love the snare,

but felts on top of the cymbals are bad

unless ou like a more muffled sound

  • I think the felts keep the cymbal from hitting the nut

  • They control how much swing you want as well.

  • that is true...but with such a tiny cymbal, the felt just allows you to play quicker...cant stand felts on tops of any cymbal me.

  • Your cymbals will last 50% less if you dont use them...

  • why is that?

  • I agree w/lewisn27: why was the ride cymbal not covered? I enjoyed that particular ride cymbal drumming style and stood out from the rest of the well known drummers of the day. Stewart, from all the Youtube coverage is still a master at the art of drumming.

  • gread vid!! thx for posting

    stew is a beasty!

  • Stewart Copeland...the last groundbreaking rock drummer

  • my friend thinks travis barker is better. He is a dumbass

  • He certainly is.

  • you should probably kill him and do the drumming world a huge favour

  • lol :) i thumbed up this comment! dont get me wrong i like travis barker but to compare him to a legend like copeland and your way to far out of the fucken ball park! haha

  • @plopenstien

whats with all the thumbs downs? travis is wank and you all know it

  • @finisher21799 I always wonder why TRAVIS is mentioned out of all the newer generation. I betcha half of the drummers in the high school bands could even beat him in a drum battle.

  • @finisher21799 your friend is a piece of shit!

  • @finisher21799

Travis Barker marched Div II DCI... Stuart Copeland did not.

  • @m63shredder hes also a tattoo'd douche, stewart is not

  • @heathnm156 So having tattoo's makes him a shitty drummer? Good one.

  • @m63shredder no just a douche

  • God, who cares. It is about the creativity and art of the drum set in a band context.

  • @finisher21799 Copeland's engineer is better than Barker!

  • @finisher21799 Why is he still your friend?

  • @finisher21799 barker is a noob if you put him up next to a legand like copeland. not even in the same building in talent or skill.

  • @finisher21799 I don't like to impugn any drummer, particularly when their playing style is completely different but Travis Barker couldn't hold a candle to Copeland.

  • @finisher21799 Even Copeland's engineer is better than Barker!

  • I emailed Jeff a while ago..asking him about Stewart's hats on the latest tour.......never got a reply...

He did read my email though, as he is on AOL and so am I, and there is a feature that lets you know if someone read your email!..Most people don't know that......

  • Stew is a rock god. All hail king Stew.

  • Why didn't he talk about his ride? that is his sig ride.

  • yes it is

  • he uses triggers wtf

  • he doesnt use them like metal drummers do, he uses it to get an electric sound for certain songs/parts of songs

  • i hate metal drummers who use triggers.

  • and they hate you.

  • common man. look at your fucking hair. that's all i need to say. even guys who don't use triggers would hate you. not for the comment, but for your sheer lack of taste. scene boy.

  • LOL, what does the way i have my hair have to do with my drumming and or use of triggers? hahah

    are you dumb or what?

lack of taste? we are commenting back and forth on a stewart copeland video, and you say i lack taste? LOL

    fucking idiot, aha

  • give it up

  • Seitz, get to work and polish that snare drum.

  • what was that song when he was hitting the splash cymbal

  • I'm not picking on Jeff, but the drum sizes/set-up are not an exact copy of his '83 kit. Then he had a 22x14 bass drum - now it's a 22x18. Then he used three rack toms - 10x8, 12x8, 13x9. Now there are only two racks 'up front' and one is to the left of the hihat (and looks deeper than standard depth). Then he used one floor tom - a 16x16. Now he has two - 16 and 18. I know I'm being picky, but it's not an exact copy. Love the Stew!!

  • Not sure if he even uses a 13" rack either. Unless the one to his left is it. The front ones look to me like a 8x10 and 9x12 with a few add ons. He's prolly just mentioning exact copy bit just to get people excited about the Copeland kits that r for sale.

  • Exactally - for Stew's drum tech to say it's an exact copy is pretty sad. Sizes, config, and wood type are all different from his Imperialstars.

  • paiste signature blue bell ride with the rhythmatist logo? beautiful..

  • I just got the signature snare. wasn't planning on it. It was just at a good price and in good condition. it sounds great! It is a well crafted instrument and sounds great. It is top of the line.

  • i mean no offence to copeland or anyone for that mater. yes hes a great drummer but why does the tech need to keep saying "signature" for. hes making it sound like copeland reinvented the use of the splash and 12" hats etc. how are the chad smith, ian paice and copeland snare's different from each other, in order to be called "signatures"

again, i mean no offence, just asking. thanks

  • well, one of the reasons is 'cause the cymbals he uses are Paiste signature series. Also, the only way drummers are different are by their own sound, and what they do, or what they use. For instance, John Bonham's (Led Zeppelin) signature sound was to have really huge sized drums with matching sized cymbals. Also, i don't know specificly about the snares, 'cause i don't use Tama drums, but my guess is materials, depth, the sort

  • yeah when they say "signature" they could be refering to the line of cymbals made by Paiste, or they could be refering to the product that was made in coalition with the artist. For example.....His snare drum is his own name signature snare, because he along with tama designed it for his own expectations.

  • damn those octos are tuned low

  • BTW...

Jeff is actually an amazing drummer himself....

  • whoh.... this is fucking awesome... thanks...

  • cant wait to get my octabons....what a sick sonding snare...stewart ownz!!!

  • Reverse octobans haha

  • Is it true stewart used a 24" Rude at one time?

  • Yes he did.....

  • yeah, it was a 24" ride. he also used 2 8" rude splashes during the regatta de blanc and zenyetta mondatta time period. from then on it was the 2002 splash cymbals. thats why the 2nd and 3rd records have a darker but crisp sounding splash to them....

  • Really nice editing showing both the explanation of the drum set combined with clips of Stewart playing it! Nice job!

  • Dr Jeff,

It is incredible how every Copeland fan knows who you are...

Great peep, but still there are a lot of "hidden" secrets left on the clip, fro ex: triggering, what model of the hi hat (medium, heavy?), the iconic tom tom sound, etc...

Anyway, it is great to see you breefing some of the most iconic aspects of Stewart´s drumming and drum kit...

Great job! Send us some more!

    Cheers!

  • i don't understand why people trigger beautiful drums like those

  • The only thing that is triggered is the snare. I believe that he only uses that for "Every breath you take" to get that cliche "80's" snare sound like in the original song. They dont play "Regatta De Blanc" on the tour so its deff not for the delay with the cross-sticking.

  • They dropped Regatta de Blanc? I saw them play it (twice, in fact) during last year's tour. They segued from it into another song(which I forget now).

  • It was reggatta de blanc and I can't stand loosing you.I saw them play it at dodger stadium. Now they're playing one of my other favorites wich I'm going to see at hollywood bowl may 27."bring on the night"irie .

  • its used for invisible sun too, it triggers a real deeps snare sound

  • Jeff,Great and thank you man for letting us have a peep at the a side of the kit,

  • Super!Stewart copeland le meilleur batteur du monde.Longue vie à the police!!

Paiste, Tama and stewart copeland: the sound, the REAL sound.

  • i own the stewart copeland blue bell ride and trust me it is the most musical thing that has ever been created. btw i baught it off of ritchies music. trust me im 13 years old and it is the greatest thing that has ever been created by paiste.

  • Way to destroy your credibility by telling everyone that you're 13.

  • I've tried it and it is quite amazing. I still enjoy my 22" Zildjian K Heavy ride though. Just more of my taste. Paiste is getting there!

  • i own the stewart copeland blue bell ride and trust me it is the most musical thing that has ever been created. btw i baught it off of ritchies music. trust me im 13 years old and it is the greatest thing that has ever been created by paiste.
