  • Why not just use a touch screen?

  • this technology is for the smart lab rats only ;)

  • pretty awsome

  • They put those things in your finger so you can walk whit them or something. Sounds stupid

  • Yes but can it explain how magnets work?

  • @Xxero0 Electromagnetism is induced by a flow of electrons through space time.

  • could one day be useful? lol

  • this is kool

  • for designers and engineers?

as long as i don't get holographic menus i'll stick with my normal menus, keyboard and mouse

  • yea can i play wow with that just a there

  • best subscribtion ever

  • Thats pretty cool, still needs some woork though :)

  • I think holograms would be even better.

  • As much as I like the idea, I am not sure it will ever catch on. The main appeal to touch screens is that there is no need for other input devices. They need to think of ways it can add more functionality. The block and checkers demonstrations were little more than virtual redundancies of what the users were doing on top of it, and there is no need for accessories to handle photo editing on a touch screen. Here's hoping someone more creative than I can think of some truly unique uses.

  • well i think this is a starting ground for sure.. my thought would be they'd minimize the need for blocks, possibly finger tip sized ones... either that, or start working on finger prints.. which would be cool, cuz then no one else would be able to use your computer... just thoughts though

  • Perhaps, but I am not sure the size of the pieces matters much. Such a device is clearly not meant to be portable after all. As for the touch screen reading finger prints, this is hardly anything new. Sharp developed finger print reading VGA touch screens in 2007. It never ended up being a major selling point, though. Unless someone comes up with something very desirable that only this technology can do, I fear there will never be a market for it. Especially with augmented reality taking off.

  • imagine slamming monitor in fustration, will it read that?

  • interesting. A buddy and I made one for music a few years ago. Works really well. Its at similarmusic doooot com

  • @Octamed will you post a video for the basic tech, to make it. ] :S

  • lol

Clunky, unimaginative, over-engineered approach to failure.

Call it iBlock and you'll sell MILLIONS!

  • this is gay

  • lol

  • this is all early adopter bs.

please get some real applications instead of trying to invent new problems. touch screen is an input method just like mice, trackballs, nubs, etc, the only difference is the tactile sensation of interacting directly with the projection(screen) would you fags please stop gushing over every obvious implementation, puh-lease.

  • They have something similar to this at Techniquest, different blocks are used for musical instruments, drum loops, sine waves and frequency and things like that, very exciting stuff

  • What was wrong with using our fingers?

  • wow i love this idea this thing will be helpfull...

  • is totally useful!

  • Dayumm !

    It recognizes Weight ?

    WTF !

  • could you give out the source code?

    or just part of it?

  • you have best videos on youtube :)

  • this technology is really coming along the only problem with this feature is that it would be slighty confusing and fustrating like when 2d touch screens came out but hey we've adapted to use them.

  • actually, when created like this they are actually more user-friendly, which means someone that is unfamiliar to how computers and software work, would be able to grasp this concept quite simply. Just like being able to drive a car without having to know how the engine works.

  • how about an ordinary chess board ???? -

  • i agree with capitanoGUC

WTF is the point in that!! use a real chess board ffs.

  • its called TECHNOLOGY no body likes old games anymore well except for the nes etc there AWSOME!

  • @lordbumblesquid me to

  • i feel really nerdy watching these videos.

    but theyre so fucking interesting.

  • I WANT THAT

  • keybaord and mouse is better

  • wawa

  • But what if you put the blocks on the surface upside-down, huh? HUH? I'll tell you what! The whole thing explodes! KA-BOOM!!!

  • Holy shit! im staying away from that!

  • kewl...

  • put a digger on it see what happens lol

  • sweet

  • No doubt it takes innovative algorithms to even have this be possible, BUT, yet again its just another interface. There are far more intuitive and realistic interfaces for 3d and CAD work today. Though the checkers demo showcases the technology, actually eliminating the blocks entirely would make it much more powerful, which is what we already have today, a mouse.

  • exactly...this is just another innovative idea that solves nothing.

  • true

  • This would make CAD a lot more enjoyable.

  • Make a building using LEGO like blocks and AutoCAD. LOL

  • Comment removed

  • uh...no lol

  • no 3d means 3 diemnsionand those 3 are length, height and the third is depth. you are thinking of the 5 senses

  • skynet in the making...

  • this is absolutely stunning..!!

technology is not taking steps ..is taking the highway..!

Don't know if this is good or bad though..

  • that's awesome! man I'd love to play Warhammer on one of those.

  • Meh.. I lost my special block *again*!! Now my rather expensive touchscreen table is useless!!

My kingdom for a graphics tablet.....

  • A little bit reminds me me of the Asgard devices in SG-1 :)

    It's nice!

  • THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!

  • Freaking awesome. I'd love to play 3D touchscreen board games. lol

  • I cant believe we arnt using 3D or lazer holagraphic viewing in this day and age, there is a German human history vidio on youtube using 3D ( viewed on a normal TV screen ), i'll try to find it................. It's Der code der Goetter ( 1v6 ) botschaften aus der eiszeit.

  • Microsoft. Hell yeah!

  • This will blatantly be put on a mac, another really really awesome feature but entirely useless one at the same time :D

    - Probably not useless professionally though*

  • Overcomplicated.

  • blocks good for teaching basic geometry?

  • I could see this technology being integrated into a stylus or a pen

  • Love to see this technologicy in public use soon.

  • Ingenious!

  • good idea, needs a lot of development tho, very nice concept :D

  • Like a stylus

  • larl we should replace all computer monitors with tables with touchscreen TVs on them LARL. jay kay.

  • gotta love science

  • could be usefull for some applications but not for designers or engineers cause they need accuracy and doing stuff with touchscreen would require more hours of work.

  • pretty sick

  • sounds like pressure sensors. hardly 2.5D

  • holy shit, this is asguard technology!

  • @jasonsadventure My thoughts exactly

  • What's wrong with just using a mouse? Or better yet, why use a mouse when we have pens and paper? derp derp

  • In my head you said "What's wrong with just using a mouse? Or better yet, why not use a mouse with a scroll wheel? derp derp"

  • because an optical mouse doesnt need to be cleaned and is more accurate... derp derp derp.

  • technophobia is SRS BSNS!!!

  • let them use whatever they want, if you dont want to use it, dont use it as easy as that

  • Kinda lame right now.. Too rough.

  • HOT - It will be fascinating to see where this goes ! ! ! ! !

  • omg its soo simple! why didnt i tihnk of that

  • This reminds me of the technology used in the Reactable musical instrument. The Reactable is pretty advanced for what it does. There are a bunch of demonstration videos of it on youtube. Just search for "Reactable".

  • how about just using a computer mouse...

  • That's what I thought, but this guy called me a Flinstone.

  • yeah. i honestly dont see how this can match the versatility and ease of use of a common computer mouse. i cant see designers or engineers using this, at least not in any way they did in the demonstration. seems to complicate things.

  • @Pelonetillo Having a huge table top to layout a blueprint, moving parts of it simultaneously using separate cursors would be a great advantage to using a mouse and monitor

It just looks a lot easier for designing complex objects, and machinery that require to be assembled from multiple parts.

The stuff they showed is just used to develop the technology. Imagine this being used in mechanical engineering software where you can stack parts together to form a working model of what you're designing.

  • lol nah mouse is actually better because that thing wud get anoying sumtimes init? id rather use a mosue tbh

  • As for the color and picture filter thing, you could throw that into a stylus pen and hanve knobs on the shaft of the pen twist to adjust color saturation and such. That would be a pretty good idea IMO

  • DJ's could use those for knobs

    thats a really cool invention

  • Actually, there is something that DJ's can use that's pretty advanced already. It's called the "Reactable". Bjork had one used in a few songs. Look it up on youtube, it's pretty facinating.

  • nice

  • I'd probably lose them somewhere.

  • wow! im effin speechless! =o

  • wow takes it to a new level

  • So we have evolved all the way back to playing with blocks - nice.

  • lol its like the odyssey console! i say it should be graphics, and leave this technology, as you said for engeneers and designers.

  • would be great for photo editing :))

  • gosh i love technology =D

  • thats pretty cool, but not amazing.

  • in chessmaster should be more interesting!

  • Touchscreens are rubbish, but i can see that the device this is presented on is... the Microsoft Surface?

  • "Microsoft's bigass table."

  • Have they replaced the wonderful female narrator? D:

  • i think Microsoft did better with her new Xbox and surface ..!!!

  • wow this could be highly useful

  • OMG. This is so cool. Especially the stamping part.

  • we could do that with fingers. easier.

  • Seriously.

  • wooahhhh!!! cool, but waaste of energy hey? is it that hard to use a mouse?

  • then why come to live in city, go back to ur cave u flintstone

  • Learn to speak English, then you may consult me, numbskull.

  • lol f@g u should learn to speak english. if u can't understand what i'm saying then u should stuff a dildo up ur ass

  • I fully understand what you are trying to say to me, however in my humble opinion, insulting someones sexual preference and reffering to them as a 'Flinstone' and then telling them to stick something up there ass shows an utter lack and incompetent standard of intellect. I refuse to waste my time with a dumb, close minded, low-life homophobe such as yourself. G'day

  • Utterly pointless. Heading in completely the wrong direction.

  • Yeah... but other technology considered piontless in the past has found good uses in the present.

  • Is that truly the best you can come up with?

  • @DeeJayBounce

I wonder what the right direction might be?

Imo it would be against telepathy, but it's way too far away to be invented yet...

  • Zajebiste, mates!
