You said you are learning dutch, don't you ? Dutch is totaly diffrent. Most people in Germany do not understand them, because it is an other language and a different country. That girl you are talking about speaks regular german. :)
It's not totally clear, where the Amish came from, because the Germany was much bigger in the time of the German Empire.(till 1918) As far as I know most Amish settled in Rhenish Palatinate, but also in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Alsace (which is today a part of France) an in the north of Swtizerland. Most Amish speaks Rhine Franconian, other dialects semms to be a mix of Middle Franconian, Swabian, Bavarian and Alemannic (all German dialects).
dude north-eastern swizerland isnt even in germany. almost every german can talg "hochdeutsch"

I'm swiss and the first part sounds very much like swissgerman, but the rest sounds like dutch. Its definatly far away from high-german
