  • I agree with Zephyr. I like this tempo as it hangs a little closer to the "Laendler" groove in which JB was so fond of writing (the first time I heard "Wie Lieblich" at a sprightlier tempo, under Don Moses' baton at Iowa in the 1980s (Moses, like Shaw, was another student of Julius Herford), I struggled with it...but a little more lilt complements the text beautifully, as it does here).

  • I like the Nanie, but this rendition was way too fast. I implore you to listen to the Robert Shaw with the Robert Shaw Chorale AND the Atlanta Symphony. A slower tempo and better blending of the voices which this rendition lacks.

  • @The48robert Funny that you should mention Robert Shaw because Donald Neuen is his greatest protege and is heralded as one of the greatest choral conductors in the world. I imagine Neuen thought a slower tempo verges on becoming too ponderous and loses the momentum of the piece.

  • Thank you for uploading this marvellous piece!

  • @AntPDC Thanks for listening!

  • @zephyr2050 It's a piece I hadn't heard before, to my astonishment, and I was rather stunned! Many thanks again.

  • Nänie

    Auch das Schöne muß sterben!

    Das Menschen und Götter bezwinget,

Nicht die eherne Brust rührt es dem stygischen Zeus.

  • What an amazing and difficult song! This was done by the Iowa All-State Choir back in like 1999 or 2000 -- I didn't make it that year but remember this song really well from the auditions.

  • @dammjosh I WAS IN THAT CHOIR! :) From Hampton-Dumont!
