@Gsus665: so just because its Kempff, no other interpretation is possible? I say musicians tend to have too much respect for "masters". Kempff has created wonderful interpretations and this is powerful and impressing by his superb control, but definitely not the final word.

Its the measure count. It helps the performer keep track of where he/she is in the music. Its also helpful during practice so you don't have to search for the part you want to work on.
