Not a bad darbuka player relative to where? Mendocino CA? You have watched the Darbuka vids by dumb teenagers in Turkiye, right? Make Anders cry. God bless those who are kind to the incompetent. ;:^) Anyhow, Yousef Sheronick is a bad mamma jamma! I've longed to see a duet between him and Glen(or between Glen and Zohar Fresco on Daf, which I think happened at some point. Riq has a few very nice players in the USA for sure, but Glen is the best.
Glen Velez has the best video for the frame drum, period. I've seen Robin A. play live, and he's really not very good, and his understanding of idiom sucks. You can't teach what you don't know. Glen Velez not only knows, he is the best teacher of the frame drum(in most of it's incarnations) and Riq in the western world, and is revered by the best players in Turkiye. Robin is admired by hippies and american bellydancers...who do you trust?
I've not seen Robin play frame drums live, but he's not a bad darbouka player at all... And though I greatly admire Glen Velez's technique, there are other players that I like better. At any rate, this is an old video (made, I believe, by Mid-East Manufacturing) and kind of a moot point, no?
Do you know Yousef Sheronick's work on riq? You can see videos here on YouTube. I think there are quite a few excellent riq players here in the US, but few have made videos/DVDs.
I don't care about his clothes; his playing is terrible, and you would waste your money. Look at any Turkish or arab player, Glen Velez, Zohar Fresco, or David Kuckhermann. Robin Anders is functionally incompetent(as well as a bad dresser).
This is a clip from a *very* basic instructional video that was made almost 20 years ago. I've heard Robin Anders play live, and he is actually quite good. here he is deliberately exaggerating certain strokes and hand movements so that beginners get some idea of what it is they're supposed to be doing.
It's actually very difficult to play any of these strokes/rhythms slowly. Much as I admire D. Kuckermann's playing, I've yet to see a good instructional (beginners') DVD from him. (or most of the other top frame drum players in the US.)
Okay...everyone here...Tar means "string" in Farsi. The tar drum originally had a string behind the skin to make a buzzing sound(like the maghrebi drum), so they called the drum a Tar. The Persians have a drum called a daff, but it has jingles but no strings. This dumbass on this video is playing a drum with the isish design, but not a bodhran. Whatever the case, he needs lessons, because he sucks.
ITS A FUCKING BODHRAN, AN IRISH DRUM YOU IDIOT- LOOK IT UP hahahaha tar, a tar is an iranian string instrument. i play with many bodhran players, this is soooo silly and ignorant
a tar it's magrehb percussion made with fishskin ,in first time ,it's quite same as daf ,but just the skin is different (fish is more elsticity and sonorous)

If you want to see where Robin Anders is doing now search"Darbuki Kings". Anyhow, this
"Robin Anders-Tar"video was only ment to be a basic short intro lesson.
The Darbuki Kings may not impress you, however, we are doing what we enjoy"MUSIC". Antonio Darbuki

I thought the Tar was a stringed instrument. I've seen something like that, but they call it a Zarb in Iran.

I gather he's on for the music instruction, commenters, not the as a clothes horse. He plays well, he's a good teacher. I'd take lessons from him.

A tar is a stringed instrument in the Persian world, and a frame drum in the Arabic world.
