Not everyone knows enough people for a 3 am football session.

And I can think of maybe two pinball machines in my city that I could go and play.

There's plenty of logistics involved that make "going outside and becoming a Nascar driver" unrealisitic. Although I do agree that the real things better and the video game adaptations are shit...people that are into that thing may be limited in their ability to simply go out and do the real thing.

While I will always prefer playing real sports over its video game counterpart, there are always certain aspects of real life sports that make playing it risky, inconvenient, expensive, dangerous, or simply impossible.

In speaking about board games, pool, pinballs, etc. I agree, these video games are unnecessary and essentially detract any social elements that you get from the real thing.

Take Sensible World of Soccer, or NBA Jam; both incredibly fun sports games and both extremely unrealistic.

"Realistic" gameplay in a game like FIFA or Madden really makes little sense when the player might as well go out and join their local soccer/football club, whereas realistic simulators like Gran Turismo or DiRT make more sense, as their real-life counterparts require large amounts of money that the player is unlikely to have.

tldr: Arcade-style is better than realistic-style in common sports vidyagames.
