I've been going to Squam Lake evr since I was only a few weeks old. Love it there so much. My brother, Aunt, Uncle, and my cousins recently stayed in this house and have been renting it for the 4th of July week for the past couple of years. THe house is so beautiful and the lake is just perfect. It's too perfect for any words to describe it. There's no word perfect enough to describe Squam LAke.
We visit friends who have a lovely home on Squam Lake. We've been to the section of the lake where the "camp" is located--and hung over the sides of the boat just like they did in the movie, watching for huge boulders just under the surface of the lake because it is dangerously shallow along the shores of Squam Lake. Saw and heard the loons. I love seeing the mountains surround the lake.
New Hampshire lakes, and Squam in particular, is my spiritual home. Spent childhood summers on Winnipesaukee and my wife and I now go to Squam. It's nice to see it means as much to others as it does to me.
Brings back fond memories of our 1983 trip to Squan Lake and Holderness. We took the pontoon ride that was offered by the ex-pilot who owned the Inn on the hill going out of town. He took us very close to the cottage. The gazebo was still there, just relocated a bit.
Though he has probably died, are such trips still available today? I'd love to return on vacation.
@davesnouffer I believe Squam Lakes Natural Science Center (SLNSC) web site is nhnature.org offers a boat tour of Squam Lake and view the filming sites from the movie. There is also a restaurant called Walter's Basin named after the fish called Walter that billy caught with Norman that you may want to check out. I'm going first chance I get this coming summer.
I am weeping right now - this is a beautiful video showing the REAL Golden Pond ... Squam Lake. I spent many many years every summer there and know every nook 'n' cranny there. I haven't been back since my folks passed. Maybe one day, I will return on a pilgrimage to see the lake again and to place flowers on their graves in the cemetary in Center Sandwich.

Thats funny that you say that because I have a very similar story. We had a cottage on Lake Sunapee and both my parents passed and we sold it... It was pretty painful and hard for me and there are so many deep, haunting memories on that lake.. I havent been to Sunapee in damn near 10 years after my Mom died of Cancer in 2000.
this is incredible, How did you ever get in to see the cottage? Its a dream of mine to get to the Great Island Narrows in Squam Lake and see the "Thayer cottage" Great job....Kevin...Canada
