I am convinced that a good fiscally conservative candidate can win in 2012 but that candidate will need to be able to draw the moderate vote and the evangelicals on the party just need to get over themselves and realize that. Palin was thrown into the mix in the last election to appease the social conservatives and it cost McCain the election.

I think it does not matter which kind of conservatism.

It is just the fact that someone could be labelled as "conservative" ie radical that decided an election with about equal chances.

Even in 1988 the Democrats could have won with a candiate that could not be labelled "liberal" in that sense that he was seen as "radical". The same holds for conservatives.

Romney and Huckabee might still be too radical in that sense, and Palin surely is.

Such candidates need an election with a clear favorite.

Hi jimitl5. Senator McCain lost the election due to not coming across as confident and made critical errors. If he had simply read the overall primary stats it clearly shows that the overall tone of the nation was not with a woman in a leadership role as President or the best choice as V.P. The open media fight from his staff against Palin and keeping her out of the loop didn't help either. Senator Clinton won approx 11 states in the primary, and lost due to making critical errors as well.

jimi: I agree, but IMO what killed Palin was her incompetence. She completely screwed up the Couric interview, and I haven't seen an interview since then where I believed she had a handle on any complex issues.

I also agree that the Reps need to focus on economic/fiscal issues, and quiet down the evangelical base...less blather about religion and gays.

I'd like to see Romney run in 2012; he's safe and vetted, and has excellent economic creds.

GOP has good chances, but don't count BO out. He is strong on his base, and he might get away with the fact that recession was not made by him and " my plan needs more time" rhetoric.

Conclusion:

She does not want to play the GOP Dukakis in 2012 and plans for 2016. or 2020 (if GOP wins in 2012)

Hi jimitl5. What you are missing is if a candidate is fiscally conservative they are also socially conservative. The term conservative means what it does - and is for good and solid moral values. A person who is not socially conservative most likely will not be fiscally conservative at all. Romney was moderate to conservative - and so is McCain. Many conservative, and moderate to conservative, woman supported Governor Palin and her view.

If Palin headed the Rep ticket in 2012, Obama would win 45 states. Palin has very high negatives and she's in over her head. She can't even speak in grammatically correct sentences.
