Sci-fi doesn't need to be overly complex or mind-blowing to be enjoyable. The people who hate this movie and others with similar styles (like The Fountain) don't get the point...it isn't trying to remake or surpass the novel or the much loved Soviet movie. It is a Scifi/Romance hybrid take on the story, and it feels very fresh, especially with the stunning visuals and sounds it hits you with. It is smooth, crisp, lovely, and fascinating. One of my favorite films of all time, stands along side Blade Runner. This trailer however is soooooo deceptive, it conveys none of the dreamy surreal atmospheres and deep emotion of the film itself. As to many people not liking it, well, most people didn't like 2001: Space Odyssey and Blade Runner when they came out either. To me this is a cinematic masterpiece. The minimalist ambient soundtrack by Cliff Martinez deserves special notice.

@emptyhighways Funny comment, this is simple hollywood melodrama film, has nothing to do with 2001 Odyssey and even Blade Runner. Anyway watch Tarkovsky 1972 version, maybe you will like it, if you liked Kubrick film. Sodenberg directed very medium film, but as it will always be compared with Tarkovsky work, medium transformed to crap.

gee, I haven't seen this nor Tarkovsky's movie, but I've finished reading the book today. and it seems to me that this film has nothing to do with the original plot by Lem. am I right?

@szlagbyto for me it has 10-15% correct with Lem's book and Tarkovsky's version is 30-40%... both of movies has quite large love's motives increased and most others cases from book are hardly decreased... so If u read orginal story i think u should see Tarkovsky's. BTW: there is Boris Nirenburg's Solaris movie too but i didn't see this version.

I don't get why there's all this hate towards this movie; it's indeed one of my favorite movies of all time. Every scene is just aesthetically pleasing and beautifully crafted; the sepia hues of the past provide a breathtaking contrast between the present and it's cold and lifeless atmosphere. You simply want to immerse yourself in the world and never come back.

in my opinion the 1972 version by Tarkovsky is well created film; shows the real story from the novel. This one (2002) is mainly focused on love, but real story is quiet different.

Both films are good, but address the love interest of the "Guests"; but the book deals a lot more with the Alieness of the unknown and the plasmid ocean organism that is experimenting with its viewers by producing these copies. Perhaps a 3rd film or "Spin-Off" would deal with the actual Alien Planet itself.

Soderbergh had hardly anything to do with it. I think he's abit of a muppet. Apparently James Cameron sorted it all out and gave it it's feel and hid all the messages. Soderbergh couldn't even tell if there wer hidden meanings when he was first interviewed - and traffic was poor!!

A deeply moving and hauntingly beautiful film. A shame it didn't do well at the boxoffice. Hopefully it'll gain an audience via dvd and tv. In my opinion, Clooney's best work. A must see.

And I like This version, not Tarkovsky. This film is closer to people, I think, deeper and shows better relationship between people. And there is an answer what people need, just like in book. By the way, the author of the book, S. Lem, said that film is ok but shows only one theme from the book.

Tarkovsky made an "art" movie that is ethereal and hard to phathom. His film is not sci-fi. At least this one is easier to relate to. No excrutiatingly slow close-ups of Kelvin's ear! The novel far surpasses anything any narrow minded film maker could create.
