  • One of the best of the Dubliners ....Luke was a really fine ballad singer..great voice ...best at this sort of song were the voice quality was more exposed with a fine open throated projection...RIP.

  • @gavinrussell1 Spot on Gavin, couldn't have put it better myself. So sad to see the way Ireland has turned out. It's become an economy and is no longer the beautiful nation it once was

  • lovely song

  • like if Love/Hate brought you here!

  • Legend....

  • Does anyone else seem to hear a sad tone in this song? It just sounds sad to me and I don't know why.

  • @gof22 cos it's a really sad love song if you read the lyrics you'd get a feel for why it's so sad ......you say sad tone i say to you a beautifully sad tone changes the whole vision for yeah now dont it

  • pure music

  • :) Love love love it. I could listen to this song forever <3

  • ireland will come back from the pain shes suffers luke kelly will always be tere and in him will will find ourselfs again, money, greed , imf, ecb have no place in ireland

  • tear to a eye !

  • gr8888888888888............... lov it,

  • Still haven't heard anyone half as good , a true legend

  • Aye, Luke could bring a tear to a glass eye, what a great singer he was. Gone - but will never be forgotten.

  • i´m far away from your culture...... but somehow i deeply love this song. makes me thing about life. thanks for uploading.

i´ll keep drinking in your worship.

  • @fredcarbon lad irish culture has degraded itself since those days its nothing more to be proud off. Its actually full off dicky DJs and a people who stand for nothing. Not a thing what luke or any of the great irish legends stood for. We genuinely have no culture now, im 22 and ud have a hard struggle too find another my age that heard this brillant song. And fair play too those who have.

  • @kellyoneill are you related to luke.

Love the vidios you have posted.

    Thank you!

  • i'm french, my culture has nothing in common with Ireland, but somehow i feel truly happy and proud when i hear him.

  • Another great vid ,Thank you.

    Michael Markey

  • Listen and learn from a a voice that is only given once in a lifetime. Luke had a gift and it lives on with videos like this.

  • kellyoneill, Thanks so much for putting up these great videos of Luke. I have loved the sound of his voice since I was a boy in the cradle. Who needs lullabies when there is Luke. Again thank you and keep posting great videos like this!

  • A video I've never seen before! Much appreciated! Thanks for sharing kellyoneill !

  • Al O'Donnell is the only one apart from Luke who can sing this. Every other singer destroys it.

  • I thought Luke Kelly was the only one who could sing this song till I heard Damien Dempsey sing it. An impossibly beautiful rendition. I must hear more of him.

  • @ln4094

You being an Aussie its great to see you appreciate Luke Kelly, the man is a legend and a son of Ireland.

  • well that proves the existance of God: slearly he has good taste in music and didnt feel like paying for Luke's C.D's.

  • Indeed. Well put my friend.

  • thats likes very last performance before he died!! rip x

  • No, this was in 1982, Lukey died in 1984 sadly, there was a few more appearances after this performance.

  • nope his very last performance is on youtube somewhere

  • Does anyone know the exact year this performance was?

  • Tells you at the very start of the vid mate,

    22nd January 1982.

  • Jeez, thanks. Had a playlist on in the background, only started watching at half way. Thanks again.

  • No Bother :)

  • @kellyoneill

11 days after my day of birth, which is why I never was able to see Luke live and in person. I thank you kelly for letting Luke live on here. You are the main reason why I visit youtube. Best wishes from Germany!

  • @thehax1982 Your very welcome, thank you :)

  • This was the first song from Luke, back in 2004, I've been listening to him ever since.

  • How can anyone compare de langer dempsey dere to Luke Kelly.. there is no comparision. Luke was really ill at this stage .. and even then he was pure class :-)

  • Wow, that is a very beautiful performance of this excellent song.

Another GREAT performance of this song was done by Ray Fisher (unfortunately not very well known, and not on Youtube). Ray Fisher - The Night Visiting Song, from the album "Traditional Songs of Scotland". Check it out if you like this song.

  • I decided to upload the Ray Fisher version of this song, you can see it via my channel or via /watch?v=Hp9QulB5MUA

  • Ugh, that url isn't working anymore; this is te new one for the Ray Fisher version of this song: /watch?v=rwUXa3VdCUI

  • Hi Kelly I did post this yesterday, but the note seems to have disappeared into the ether....

I was wondering what is the source for this video? It seems as if it was professionally shot, but the clip itself is rather poor quality. I've tried to make out what the captions say, but my old eyes don't work like they used to. (Too much Liffey water and Jamesons' I fear.... Can you enlighten me, please? And any news of the campaign for the release of Luke/Dbliners' material from RTE? Cheers Mitch

  • Its from rte's archives. Its available on the come west along the road series by rte, needledd to say the quality is perfect on dvd!

  • a special man. will never be repeated

  • I discovered Luke Kelly a few months ago. I fell in love with his voice at once... and I havent been the same since. Most beautiful and compelling voice Ive ever heard, and thats the truth.

  • I have hunted for something as good as Luke for nearly twenty years.I have now come to understand that this is as good as it gets. All you can do now, is study his music and what it meant, and pass on what you have learned.

Oh,I just realised I have met you before,on other songs!.

You have fallen deeply under the spell, havent you!and proven to have great taste that will hopefully last a lifetime!Share your enthusiasm as much as you possibly can.Luke and the Dubliners deserve it!.

  • youre so right, the best thing we can do is share this music with those who havent heard it before as KellyO has done so well.

  • same happened to me! first heard his voice on the end of in bruges went to youtube next day and thanks to kelly oneill i found him and the dubliners

  • Lovely song.

  • been playing the Dubliners for 40 years and to me they are still brilliant. so many favourites. thank you for posting.

  • This song floors me every time.

  • Hey kellyoneill.......you put some good kelly vids up fair play! kelly is a savage singer! I Like drew aswell unique voice like kellys...

  • what songs are they? no one can do ny of lukes songs and have the same effect on them as he did, all though i do like the orthodox celts version of rocky road to dublin if different but i like it

  • they are school days over and the night visiting song just type in damian dempsey and the dubliners they will come up.

lol if you cant stand listening to them!

  • I listened to a number Dempsey's versions of Luke songs. He should be arrested for murder. This bloke can't sing. It is Luke that makes these songs great. It is the singer not the song. No impersinators please.

  • couldnt have put it better myself!!!

  • whos dempsey and fair play kelly loving your work why do u like him so much

  • ah Damian dempsey he has 2 songs of lukes up on youtube and he murdered both!

Luke is an amazing performer with a unique voice, and he also a very rare human being :)

  • I hear Damien Dempsey's head is woolly on the inside!;)

  • lol, that it is :)

  • Damien Dempsey? I have no idea of whom you are talking about. That probably says it all.

  • Oh yeah I meant to ask, when was this recording. Pretty close to the end??

  • 1993

  • Surely you meant 1983!!!

  • lol that i did!

  • ha I langhed when I read those few comments. luke's the man never will be another like him.

  • Dempsey is a muppet, he should'nt embarrass himself by even trying to sing any luke song song, never mind this one!

  • That's it Kelly let ripp at people like mcanner25 for saying such stupid things!

  • Howdi Kelly. Listen I've been up to see Luke in St. Paul's Cemetery. Real sad episode, have you been there, I did a recital of the Sons Of Roisin. Caught on video.

  • hey, yeah iv been there many times.

caught on vid? you should upload it.
