I have used his techniques at sheep herding classes, and they have worked wonders for me, really improved my job as a handler. In my opinion, Andy Nickless is and excellent teacher.
@JLDINDINGER Hi, I think the videos would work for you, just remember that for the most part border collies are really intelliegent. So I think the videos would work for you but it might just take a little longer for your dog to learn then a border collie. thats comparing the average border collie to the average blue heeler. if yours is smarter/more trainable then the average blue heeler then it should learn a little faster then them. good luck.
So does border collie listens to every word or is it like 3:50-4:00? Sometimes they don't always listens to their command or was it, that one wasn't as trained as your best dog? I have a border collie myself but she's still a puppy. I'm sure they're supposed to be the most intelligent dog, but do they listen to every command you teach them? Or sometimes they get distracted?
@DukeCreator Sometimes the BC can become so focused on what it's instincts are telling it to do AND what it is already anticipating what you will say, they will tune you out. But, as they get older, they become more obedient. Patience.
@DukeCreator The dog is only as good as the trainer...as with all dogs. Although, BCs tend to have an extreme ability to focus, they still need time and patience to become fluent with commands. Have fun!
I do not own a sheepdog, but generally in dog training it is easiest to rely on the group instincts of the dog: You use a way of talking and moving that starts from the dog's mood and then slowly transforms to what you want from the dog right then so that the dog can just copy from you who are his/her pal, pack member. Please try it out, the results are amazingly good!
I'd love to teach my two working bred girls to herd but I don't have access to sheep and there is nowhere even remotely nearby to me that does lessons.
i just got this dvd and its fantastic!!! sheila my border collie sat on my lap and fell asleep... but it is a brilliant dvd! cant wait for the next part! and poor Glen and Mel - those grey faces! lol
