I am not using max from years, but I would say the last version 9 (not 2009) compared to XSI was in the stone edge. If you want to cut edges and rotate the view, then cut again the tool is inactive because you rotated the view. Max was an outdated app. and probably stil is.
Where did the modify selection, loops, tris- subdivision tab go in the Graphite Modelling in max 11? Or did the computer (public) purposely removed them? I like the layout of the ribbon in 2010-?
I have been a 3ds max professor over 12 years since its version 1. there is nothing easier to learn than 3ds max and especially for modeling, nothing beats it. If there is something any other software has in modeling, 3ds max has it too; just ask, it's there, just gotta find the tool buried not obvious.
Selecting every other edge loop and deleting them like he does in 1:48 is a really messy way to do poly reduction, look at all the non planar faces he left behind...

@saprissa9 MM = Middle Mouse button. You may also see LMB (Left Mouse button) or RMB (Right Mouse button). These are used to pan, zoom and rotate the viewport.
every year, a new tool or version of a program will come out and artists are constantly having to relearn the software and constantly pressured to learn them to help cut time off their workflow... should people not try and master a piece of software bc a new version will be out in a few months? or should they try and master a specific version and excel at it? i still use Max 2009 and love it. wondering if I should upgrade to 2011.. but dont want to have to spend the time learning new crap. lol

FINALLY! I am in love with these Graphite Tools. IN LOVE! Ive been wanting these features since Max 5! My modeling has sped up 400% thanks to Max and Zbrush!
you don't have to complain nothing about guys. these new features in max make modeling 10 times faster than it was before. the only thing you have to do is just to get used to it :)
@02daft you're an embaressment to all LW users. I've worked in production with LW, 3dsmax, Maya, Softimage and they're ALL good. You sound like a stubborn religious fanatic rather than a decent & experienced user.
@02daft Holy crap dude! You're complaining about a tool. Max is a Pencil, Maya is a pen, SoftImage is a Paintbrush, who cares which one you use? Spend less time whining about people not using your favorite piece of software, and more time doing something with it. If you can make something great with Modo you will be taken way more seriously than if you just go around trolling on YouTube. Channel that energy! I'm excited to see what you can do!
@02daft I know, right? They both make mistakes with their software, but in the end wind up producing an industry standard that nearly everyone uses. It's really too bad. By putting in way less effort they could be unsuccessful and unusable by most normal people, just like Linux!
Compare to MS all you want, but it's just not going to end well for you when someone with analytical skills shows up.
Which is also owned wholly by Autodesk. Lol - they make quality products, and max is no exception. That's why it's an industry standard, right beside Maya and Zbrush.
it has alot of new easy features/improvements that version 9 did not have and saves up a lot of time when modeling in 3d, interface also looks better. I got into 3d modeling after seeing those cyberpunk avatars in secondlife LOL so i got 3ds max9 and it was great but after upgrading to the 2010 version it was amazing! this is one great program you guys will love! specifically for 3D modeling i mean :D theres lots of other programs out there for modeling but ima stick to this
So Would I ( Being New To Animation and 3D ) Use This Program Or Are There Other Programs For New People In This Type Of Thing. I Herd Of Blender.. I think This... And Maya. Which one would i start with if im new to all this?
unless youre some kind of rocket scientist, stay away from blender. the reason they call it blender is because if you are new to 3D modeling and you try to make sense out of blenders interface you might as well stick your brain in a blender. youre going to hate it until you get a better program like 3ds.
I use blender, im also starting to use 3ds max, and i like both of them, i like blender better only for the fact that ive used it alot longer and i am used to it
yeah for example if you want to create a game you need visual studio C# XNA and softimage then you need 3ds max because it has more andvanced rendering options and another one is motion builder if you want to animate your object...
On autodesks site, they have a list of some companies that use it. Other than that, its just by watching developers commentary. When watching developers commentary for halo, I saw a grunt in Maya, so thats how I took the gander that it is maya they are using. With Fable, I saw them animating in Max, so I knew they were using max.
"Truly an artist-driven tool", LOLLLLLLLLLL Best thing about this is the intro music. Again, these "new" features were stolen from modo, and then autodesk couldn't even incorporate them into Max in an intuitive way(like how they are implemented in modo). Die, Max, die!!! :D Heck, any Autodork software is slow, outdated, and buggy like nothing else. I like Mudbox, but crap, it is unstable. Just wish Zbrush OR Max had customizable navigation controls(like modo!).
Hey, the new modelling tools isn't invented by Autodesk. It comes from the Polyboost plugin for 3Ds Max 2009 some genious people made. Was so good that they just bought it and renamed it to Graphite Modelling Tools.
Just like how they got the Maya muscles for maya, originally a plugin.
You shouldn't be so judgmental cause many many studios use 3Ds Max. A good example is all the Blizzard CGI videos for WoW and Warcraft, all made in 3Ds Max.
I'm gonna learn Maya now so I know BOTH programs.
No, 3ds max is not for real time rendering at all. Its probably used for pre-rendering more then maya is. 3ds max is pretty much maya, but maya has a simpler user user interface and might be considered more user friendly.
Also 3ds max is more commonly used by gaming companies to create thier 3d models.
probably because of Max capabilities - it covers everything you need from modeling, texturing to animation so it's just one soft for all the designers. Another thing is max's compatibility with other tools - eg. mudbox or zbrush. Export import and in most cases it runs just fine. Most of my experience with modeling for games was creating max models to run with DirectX environment
Well, i think that in my opinion 3ds max is easier to learn, because last year i've been using 3ds max for like 5 years and then tried to learn maya but it was really all confusing for me (the interface and the tools and commands) so i just continued to do 3ds max since the programs don't differ too much...
Maya is the leading animation program, and 3Ds Max is considered stronger for modeling and architectural stuff. But all in all no program is limiting the artists. I use 3Ds Max, and I am gonna learn Maya soon. My impression is that Maya is stronger in it's core and can handle much more, and a better program animating with then 3Ds Max. But that is just what I've heard.
well they are the same (the only thing thats changes is the script editor at 3ds max (it is better) and it seems to be more advanced but in maya seems to be easyer for modeling and effects i've tried both of them
for me maya is for modeling and rendering realisting photos and 3ds max is for scripting, and we should try to lower detal at objects for having a good perfmance if we edited them at a project in visual studio/XNA/C# Lang
Maya is an amazing animation/Rigging program, with pretty good modeling tools to boot.
3ds max is an amazing modeling program, with pretty good rigging tools to boot.
So one package focus' on one thing, while the other on the other thing (if that made any sense)
Maya is the standard now really, mainly cause it decreases the trouble for one of the most difficult things an artist has to do... rigging. But by all means, both packages are great, and are still WIDELY used...
That is awesome! I havent used 3dsmax since what was it version 9?.... i used to use polytoolsboost or whatever it was called (aftermarket) that did this... finally 3dsmax has it stock lol...
select the edges you want to remove , loop them n then press CRTL + Backspace... this will remove the edges as well as related vertices ....... to have low poly prefer removing alternate edges..... and edges which are between flat mesh...

@steamisM50
how do you figure out wich 3d software was used for specific games?
and thnx for the list, i always wondered what games were made using 3ds max
xXYoKoMoMoXx 2 years ago
On autodesks site, they have a list of some companies that use it. Other than that, its just by watching developers commentary. When watching developers commentary for halo, I saw a grunt in Maya, so thats how I took the gander that it is maya they are using. With Fable, I saw them animating in Max, so I knew they were using max.

@yorgaraz

Don't waste $3500 on this crap.

Modo Fanboy right here, also if you get it educationally (£225)

Hey, the new modelling tools isn't invented by Autodesk. It comes from the Polyboost plugin for 3Ds Max 2009 some genious people made. Was so good that they just bought it and renamed it to Graphite Modelling Tools.
Just like how they got the Maya muscles for maya, originally a plugin.
You shouldn't be so judgmental cause many many studios use 3Ds Max. A good example is all the Blizzard CGI videos for WoW and Warcraft, all made in 3Ds Max.
I'm gonna learn Maya now so I know BOTH programs.

did they use 3ds max for assasins creed 2?

Ok guys hear this---- MAYA and 3ds MAX
Diffenrence is> Maya its more for pre-reding 3d or cinematic 3d eg.(movie or game intro)
-and 3ds max is more for real time reding
eg.(gameplay 3d)
if I'm wrong could someone please tell me what a hell is the difference between maya and 3ds max. i can't take it anymore
paulmc8623 2 years ago
No, 3ds max is not for real time rendering at all. Its probably used for pre-rendering more then maya is. 3ds max is pretty much maya, but maya has a simpler user user interface and might be considered more user friendly.
Also 3ds max is more commonly used by gaming companies to create thier 3d models.
joeysipos 2 years ago
thank you I realy appreciate your clarification.
but is there a specific reason or a special feature on 3ds max that makes it often used by video game companies?
paulmc8623 2 years ago
probably because of Max capabilities - it covers everything you need from modeling, texturing to animation so it's just one soft for all the designers.

Maya is easier but all the world as you said uses 3ds max all those years.
i started with maya and i saw that it was easier and 3ds max is more andvaced..

InSaneTK 2 years ago
well they are the same (the only thing thats changes is the script editor at 3ds max (it is better) and it seems to be more advanced but in maya seems to be easyer for modeling and effects i've tried both of them
for me maya is for modeling and rendering realisting photos and 3ds max is for scripting, and we should try to lower detal at objects for having a good perfmance if we edited them at a project in visual studio/XNA/C# Lang

I havent used 3dsmax since what was it version 9?.... i used to use polytoolsboost or whatever it was called (aftermarket) that did this... finally 3dsmax has it stock lol...

i think you should use backspace
xcrementor 2 years ago
Try pressing BACKSPACE instead of DELETE.
Camaron47 2 years ago
select the edges you want to remove , loop them n then press CRTL + Backspace... this will remove the edges as well as related vertices ....... to have low poly prefer removing alternate edges..... and edges which are between flat mesh...

I'd rather want them to fix the ProBoolean tool. It messes up geometry.
