"The reason why they can never answer the question "How could it possibly happen?" is that it's the wrong question. Given what people are, the question is "Why doesn't it happen more often? Of course it does, in subtler forms" - So sad but so true!
I love this monologue, movie and Max von Sydow. I totally get Barbara Hershey's character in this movie; particularly her scene with Max von Sydow called 'We all had a terrific time', which contains the first couple lines of this piecemeal monologue. Certainly in my top 5 favorite Woody Allen flicks. Happy Birthday Woody!
@buffilms I know. That's the line that kills me every time, but also the line that seems to insult some people the most - ha ha. I'm not even going to touch that one because I so strongly AGREE.
@Picardy max's character is such a snob in the movie, but when he gets dumped you kinda feel for him. i heard max and barbara hershey got a standing O from the crew after they shot that scene
This is just fantastic. It is too bad however that it ended just before he started talking about how Jesus would never stop throwing up if he came back and saw what was going on in his name. I remember thinking at the time that Max Von Sydow should have won an oscar for best supporting actor just on the basis of this short but brilliant monologue.
Woody Allen at least won a BAFTA for the screen writing of this film. I share his views and outlooks in a lot of his past films - more recently, he doesn't pontificate as much, which I miss. Thanks for your post - have a good day!
As far as I know Max is still with us. Great dialoque written for him in this film. I love how the first time we hear him speak in the movie, he's sitting behind a plastic curtain. Great symbolism for his character to separate himself like this.

@susankhamilton Absolutely agree. In this monologue he doesn't even sound like he's acting, which really shows the talent this man has.

Awesome film from a great actor. But your homage made me think he'd died, so I had to check IMDB.
