This film production has watered down John Thorpe's character considerably. In the novel, when he arrives in Bath with his friend, he tells his mother she looks like an old witch in her new hat, greets his younger 2 sisters by telling them they look ugly, and considers Mr. Allen and General Tilney "rich as Jews."

Mr Tilney seems just her type very fanciful,they were cute together-started watching the 1987(?)version and thought it was weird-did'nt get her fanciful dreams-they were more like nightmares and her new friend Isabella was so nauseating with her constant giggling-I thought this can't be a true JA adaptation -only watched 4 segments till I changed to this one-it's much better-hav'nt read the book but knowing other JA-novels/ movies this adaptation seems more true.
