if you fitted a new cat you mite have gotton more bhp back as some dum dums put additives in the fuel which doesnt fully burn up and gets blocked in the cat, also over time the cat will also get block up by over fueling (happens to all cars time to time) so if your going to do a full engine build get a new cat. (easyest way to check yours is fit a de-cat and if you get more than 3bhp your cat is totaled)
Well done dum dums you have done half a servicee and managed to put enough junk in the engine to block the cat which will LOWWER PERFORMANCE!!! Also you can not high the comp ratio by putting thick junk in with the oil either the rings and gaskest are fine or there not it can not be fixxed by additives! only buy new parts! Also injector cleaners donest clean the injectors it blocks up the fuel pump filter injectors and cat so well done.
There is no way I would add that stuff to the oil. If you think about the way the internal parts of the engine work, it is thickening the oil and preventing it from circulating correctly. That will lead to overheating and oil starvation. The additive in the petrol is a waste of time, it is similar to transmission fluid & alcohol and does nothing. The most difference will be from the air filter and spark plug change. So glad you put a correct large surface area air filter in !
one thing putting that shit in your engine to restore compression is a joke if you want coompression back you have to replace the pistion ring and if your going go that far you should do a whole engine rebuild
so what your saying is by doing normal maintanance on your car it will give you horse power??? cuz i did all this stuff to my car and it didnt do crap ... i cleaned all the fuel injectors and put in a CAI and it and that did more than all the stuff u said to do. show stuff that will actually increase it higher than stock HP. i also think its funny that ur telling me how to improve my car and u had never done an oil change... not hatin on ya im Just sayin.
@blazerguy55 I think it will only stop the car from losing HP, the more miles you got the more power will lose, if you do your maintenance you can prevent some of the loss
so what your saying is by doing normal maintanance on your car it will give you horse power??? cuz i did all this stuff to my car and it didnt do crap ... i cleaned all the fuel injectors and put in a CAI and it and that did more than all the stuff u said to do. show stuff that will actually increase it higher than stock HP

i was cringing while you were using the impact gun with chrome sockets. i heard horror stories from my HS auto tech teacher about chrome sockets and impact guns. Told us to always use black sockets with impact guns
lol your going to crack the heck out of your chrome sockets using an impact on it. use an impact socket because its spinning your socket at least at 300 torque and thats eventually going to crack your chrome sockets
you should never start using synthetic oil in a car with more than 35k mi.if it has been running regular oil its whole life. the oil will not saturate the metal in the enging properly and over time will make your enging wear out faster.if you plan on keeping the car for a long time pick one type of oil and stick with it.change it as often as you can afford to so when you cant afford it you can drive 6, 7k w/o an oil change and not worry bout damage.complete tune up parts shud b no more than 265
Using that compression enhancment stuff together with synthetic oil is the most stupid thing you can do. It thickens the oil and the synthetic looses its advantages.
And Im sure it will not enhance compression even a little bit
how are you going to host a automotive show when you have never even done your own set of brakes? I guess thats about on par for a window licking, autozone shopping, import driver.
To be honest, this is definitely NOT the most abused car out there. It has had nearly regular maintenance and probably wasn't street raced everyday. That engine is not tired, 166k used to be a lot for cars, but nowadays, cars are hitting 200k with fair treatment. Seeing as it's only lost 15hp, which is amazing, you can gain most it back with a good service. However, losing compression is an irreversible consequence of wear. Glad to see you getting your hands dirty! Love the show!
u could have got a K&N air filter why go with the oem style fram i understand u guys were looking for stock performance but it wouldn't have been much of a upgrade
HORRIBLE BRAKE JOB!! He's going to get all kinds of squeaking and vibrations from handling those rotors with his greasy paws. Besides that new rotors come out of the box covered in a lite coating of machine oil to prevent rusting on the shelf. Where's the step using brake cleaner to remove that!! And then he used an air-powered wrench to re-install the caliber. I realize he's a "first time mechanic" but that dude who was suppose to have the experience should have stopped him!
Leo lives in NY, and we live in LA now. So the lack of Leo is strictly because of location. If we find ourselves in the same place at the same time, we will most certainly shoot with him again.
As for the Garage419 style news, since we are independent now our resources are limited. Hopefully within a few months we will have the resources to make a second weekly episode with an interview, shop tour, or just my incessant ramblings about w/e ishappening in cars. But we are a new show, not G419.
Nice looking Jetta! It's actually called "Bora" in Europe. Looks like a fun job to do with your friends.
I have always done my car's service with myself. It's so fun and rewarding! Even more exclusive car's like BMW 7-series or Audi A8 ain't any more difficult to service than any other car.
I like how your working with a normal car within most people's budgets. I'm looking forward to see how much performance is returned... Nice work - this is fun to watch.
The Lexus ES250 has a pretty big air filter, too. And the radiator on it is also pretty big; it stretches from headlight to headlight, and holds 10 quarts of coolant
I'm jealous, first brakes I ever did were drums on a '66 Mustang. Good call on the oil, I prefer Royal Purple, but any synthetic will reduce liquid resistance on the crank assembly, which increases the fuel mileage and gives a subtle increase in horse power. Still can't wait for next week.
Are those duralast brake pads and rotors? That stuff is really crappy. I've used them on a 2001 Toyota Sienna, and a 1999 F150; they wore out quick, and it sounded like a big rig every time I stopped after 2.5k miles.
Never using them again. I ended up getting Akebonos and just a standard Brembo rotors for my 99 E320 for about the same price as duralast, it was like 30 bucks more overall at TireRack and they were much better.
im surprised you didnt go with the k&n air and oil filters. and with the fuel injector cleaner make sure to put that in right before you fill the take, helps it mix better
actually as longe as it fits into oem positions, doesnt void any warrentys, and does not require any modification its still considered oem, and in case of the jetta you down graded form the boch oil filter that came with it from the factory
Glad to see you finally learning how to work on a car Matt. All in all, it's all pretty simple. It took you 5 hours, but you saved several hundred dollars by doing it yourself instead of hiring someone to do it (I know, it's not even your car).
I have those Duralast Gold brake pads on my Protege. They suck. I don't have ABS and I don't think the pads are capable of generating any wheel locking power. I really don't like them. I had EBC Greens on before and LOVED those pads.
at least u dont pretend like u know how to work under the hood. u definitely could. im honest, idk how to work on cars, but i do know with a torquewrench to go star pattern. doesnt look like u did but who cares?
This is SOOOOO much better than anything y'all did with Garage 419. I have a 1994 Silverado, which was my first vehicle in 1998, that I recently took out of storage after four years and put back on the road. This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. I've replaced the filters and fluids, but I haven't thought of any additives or anything. This is great for people in the same situation as I recently found myself.
Transverse V6 (and V8) engines SUCK. They are a bitch to maintain because getting to the back of the engine you have to go through a minefield! And many of them have head gasket problems (Toyota's 3VZ, Ford's Essex, and GM's 3400) and they have TWO headgaskets and the BACK gasket is the one that goes if not both! Can't get to the back set of spark plugs, either!
Haha yeah man I know... My friend ust recently blew the gasket, pistons and had an oil leakage... he hasn't serviced the car for nearly 2 years... IDIOT!
Oh by the way, good 3 part episode... and, sorry but get rid of the vette man lol
Hahha alrite they're nice cars, I'll give you that.. Sound is awesome too, wish I had the money for something like that! I'll stick with my VRS for now :D
They even give you a book telling you what needs to be done when you need to do it!
This is one of the big things that got GM in trouble. They designed "long-life" shit that you supposedly never have to change, like the trans fluid. Their 150000-mile dex-cool coolant rusts out the whole cooling system. At least they got the oil-life monitor right though.
Hell no, I'm a driver, not a wrench.... But I'm learning quickly, and since we shot this video, I've done maintenance on both my Corvette and motorcycle by myself. Never too late to learn....
You've got an entertaining show going. It would be nice for the next time you do something like this to get some feedback or "expert" advice on selecting parts. Maybe from a forum like this. I always research the parts I put on my cars to get the best bang for my buck. It would be great to tune in and find out about new or little known products. Keep up the good work.
Fram makes some horrible products, I heard their oil filters are poorly built without the metal core, except for the heavy duty ones. I either use Mobil or Wix or just buy from a dealer.
Thanks for letting me know man, unfortunately there's no Advance around SF area. The only ones are Kragen, Autozone and Pep boys with the last two ones being in other cities. Anyways, I think I'll just wait for another sale lol. Thanks.
go to Walmart for engine oil. That's where I get mine, 5quart jugs of synthetic are anywhere from 20-30 bucks. And there is always something on sale(if you don't mind using a different brand)
Gotta love the fuel filter locking plastic clips, VW likes to make any connection out of a plastic that is a PITA to take apart with having a massive fear of breaking them. I have a few harnesses under the hood of my Jetta with broken clips. I still love my VW though, it is a love/hate relationship that only a few understand.
had a quick question. whenever i floor it on my 4runner it smells like rotten eggs and also i think it leak oil from a broken gasket on the engine. could it be be that the smell is from the cat conveter? if so would i need to replace it or if it will be fine. thnx
Your cat is bad. Rotten Egg usually means your cat is toast. You don't need it unless you care about emissions or your local state regulations make you have O2 emissions. What really matters is if you like a rotten egg smelling exhaust or not.
don't worry, this is just part 2, there's one more to go, where we find out if the work pays off.... and that's when we will do our price/horsepower/laptime analysis.....
that engine is not indended for rebuild apparently. use restore and let it go til the end and then scrap it...and beware of oe oil pumps moving that stuff. and if any active carbons are internal...they aint leaving now. why did they waste a few more dollars on synthetic...
Great episode, can't wait for the last part to see how all your work payed off. Another product for older engines I've used is "Engine Restore" but I imagine most similar products can give you equal results.
This probably isn't you guys type of thing. But it would sweet to see you do an episodic "budget" hop up of a car. Similar to what you are doing with this one but with more perfomance parts and what not. Just a thought.
When the dyno guy said use the compression restore stuff, I think he was referring to the product simply called "Restore". It comes in a silver can that opens like a pop can and I'v found it works wonders to old motors, especially reducing oil cunsumption/burn off. I'm still wainting for the vid to load, but hopefully the Penzoil or whatever stuff you bought can do the same.
I would def recommend the Engine Restore. Like I said, I've used it on a bunch of old motors, of all sizes and makes, and it's def helped out.
For example, I had a '95 Mitsu Montero I bought with 135k miles on it and burned about a quart of oil a week! After using Engine Restore during oil changes, after about 3 or 4 oil changes it went down to about a 1/2 quart a month and ran much better, plus improved fuel economy.
Except I'm talking about high mileage cars here, since Engine Restore would be required and on older vehicles and higher mileage vehicles, it's best to do you oil changes often, like at 3k miles no matter what oil you use.
An older motor that already needs Engine Restore will be pretty beat and most likely have quite a bit of sludge and carbon build up in it. This is what contaminates your oil, making it turn black and reducing it's lubrication performance. So keeping the oil fresh will keep the engine lubricated properly and help it perform better and last longer.
Even with old motors, there is really no need to change the motor oil every 3k miles. You're really wasting the oil if you plan to dump it after 3k.
You could drain the oil after 3k and it'll look no where near worn. It'll practically look the same as when you put it in. The oil we used today is nothing like the types of oils that were available in the 80s.
Also be careful about using those engine restore, the last thing you want is for that stuff to slip into any bearings.
I can tell you that on every car I've owned (all 90k+ miles) has had black oil after 3k miles and def shows signs that it needs changing. I have also tried out all kinds of oil brands, and I never buy cheap generic brand oil either. Some of these cars don't burn any oil either. They're just an older design that doesn't have as tight of tolerances as newer motors have.
I understand where you're coming from, but that only really applies to more recent engine designs. My newest car is 7 years old, but the engine was designed in the early 90's.
You make a valid point for weekend track or race cars, but since it's not going to be tracked regularly, just a few laps around for our test, and since we're only performing Factory-recommended maintenance and not a performance upgrade, stainless steel brake lines aren't necessary.
new tires weren't part of regular maintenance? the tires that came on that 12v VR are trash. Understandably they will not affect the dyno, however they will make ur lap times all sorts of trashy.
Lolz if you think those are shot brakes LMAO those are just a little glazed easily resurfaced at your local parts store. But replacing is never a bad thing. If you think of it glazed brakes will make the squeaking noise and will not stop as well because they don't produce enough friction resurfacing removed material so your brakes become thinner so replacing them to really abuse it is really a good thing because your less likely to crack or warp them because they are too thin.
My benz has got 328k miles on it no surprise the compression is weak. I was gonna just wait and drop some new rings in or just get another engine and drop it in. But I don't got ANY extra time now between working and going to school 17 hours.
Bottom line I have reletivly crappy compression I didn't know this stuff existed no time to rebuild/replace I'm gonna have to try some of that stuff out.
It may or may not work, if your car is really broken, then it's going to be a temporary fix at best, but it's worth a try before you spend hundreds/thousands on a rebuild.
Ya it runs fine but its a little hard starting and on a diesel thats usually compression.
I rering it myself and do all that other crap so thats not a problem. But its more of a time issue. It'll take atleast a full day to pull the engine out rebuild it and put it back in usually two because the machine shop takes its time resurfacing the head.
A temp fix would be great for now. those engines are known for going 500k without rebuild but most people run them a long time on bad comp
OK, well I didn't check one way or the other, but if it's a diesel you may want to use a different product than I used, just check the bottle before you dump it in :)

actually as longe as it fits into oem positions, doesnt void any warrentys, and does not require any modification its still considered oem, and in case of the jetta you down graded form the boch oil filter that came with it from the factory

I had EBC Greens on before and LOVED those pads.

dont EBC stink like dead fish. When i worked at pep-boys i used to hate selling those cause they stank so bad.

Can't get to the back set of spark plugs, either!
bottomlayer 2 years ago
Never worked on any of those other engines, but the spark plugs in the VR6 didn't require removing anything but the plastic covering.

Oh by the way, good 3 part episode... and, sorry but get rid of the vette man lol

Never, that car will go to my (eventual) children. 420 wheel horsepower and coilover suspension go a long way for the vette

Hahha alrite they're nice cars, I'll give you that.. Sound is awesome too, wish I had the money for something like that! I'll stick with my VRS for now :D
SammyJ21 2 years ago
They even give you a book telling you what needs to be done when you need to do it!
This is one of the big things that got GM in trouble. They designed "long-life" shit that you supposedly never have to change, like the trans fluid. Their 150000-mile dex-cool coolant rusts out the whole cooling system. At least they got the oil-life monitor right though.

Hahahaha this is GM though :)

you guys should have put a turbo on, and add a T badge to let others know, it'd say BORAT
ps, i don't know if the vr6 has a turbo as standard

Careful. DIY is a time consuming addiction!

I either use Mobil or Wix or just buy from a dealer.
mrjost55 2 years ago
yup and the easy grip on the oil filters hold the heat in and make it get hotter then normal. I blew up and engine cause of that once.
limitlessracer 2 years ago
Purolator's Pure-One filters also have an easy grip texture, but they are among the best filters any amount of money can buy, right up there with WIX
And the really funny thing is that any of these filters (Wix/NapaGold, PureOne) are all cheaper than some Frams (about $6)
Even the $3 Purolator is better quality than the most expensive Fram!
BTW, Autozone doesn't sell Purolator filters
bottomlayer 2 years ago
I used to work for pep-boys and puralators are the only filters i buy. And the ones i buy dont have the easy grip. and yeah frams suck.
limitlessracer 2 years ago
He probably got a Mobil 1 oil filter because they usually have that special for $30 where you get five quarts and a filter
bottomlayer 2 years ago
@ bottomlayer: what store can you get Mobil 1 oil for $30? That's a good price, was that at Autozone or Kragen?
fmwso 2 years ago
It changes. I've seen it at this price at the Zone, Advance, and Pep Boys. There are no Kragens in NJ.
When I went two weeks ago, Advance had the sale.
It's funny because Advance looks a lot like the zone, both inside and out, and many of them are in the same lot or across the street from the zone
Also, ExxonMobil is offering a $10 rebate until the 31st if you buy 5qt 0W-20 or 0W-30 and filter (it can be 5 bottles or the big 5q jug)
bottomlayer 2 years ago
AutoZone's sale just ended :(
However, Advance now has Castrol Edge and a Purolator PureOne filter for $25
bottomlayer 2 years ago
Thanks for letting me know man, unfortunately there's no Advance around SF area. The only ones are Kragen, Autozone and Pep boys with the last two ones being in other cities. Anyways, I think I'll just wait for another sale lol. Thanks.
fmwso 2 years ago
go to Walmart for engine oil.

I didn't find a problem changing out the fuel filter, did it myself with a screwdriver in about 5 minutes...

had a quick question. whenever i floor it on my 4runner it smells like rotten eggs and also i think it leak oil from a broken gasket on the engine. could it be be that the smell is from the cat conveter? if so would i need to replace it or if it will be fine. thnx
BlazingCheerio 2 years ago
Your cat is bad. Rotten Egg usually means your cat is toast. You don't need it unless you care about emissions or your local state regulations make you have O2 emissions. What really matters is if you like a rotten egg smelling exhaust or not.
skoty 2 years ago
yup smells like a dead cat to me :P
If it is the cat yes replace it- its not cheap but you have to have it by law and your poluting a lot more without it. Just talk to your mechanic

that engine is not indended for rebuild apparently. use restore and let it go til the end and then scrap it...and beware of oe oil pumps moving that stuff. and if any active carbons are internal...they aint leaving now. why did they waste a few more dollars on synthetic...

adamaoc 2 years ago
Great episode, can't wait for the last part to see how all your work payed off. Another product for older engines I've used is "Engine Restore" but I imagine most similar products can give you equal results.
This probably isn't you guys type of thing. But it would sweet to see you do an episodic "budget" hop up of a car. Similar to what you are doing with this one but with more perfomance parts and what not. Just a thought.
Roehm21 2 years ago
Yea, "Engine Restore" is what it's called. I thought it was just "Restore" as mentioned in my post below. That's good stuff.
typhoon5000 2 years ago 2
When the dyno guy said use the compression restore stuff, I think he was referring to the product simply called "Restore". It comes in a silver can that opens like a pop can and I'v found it works wonders to old motors, especially reducing oil cunsumption/burn off. I'm still wainting for the vid to load, but hopefully the Penzoil or whatever stuff you bought can do the same.
typhoon5000 2 years ago
Can you recommend anything to me for an engine burning oil? Does any of that snake oil shit actually work?
I've seen that shiny can, comes in three sizes (I would need the medium for 6-cyl)
bottomlayer 2 years ago
I would def recommend the Engine Restore. Like I said, I've used it on a bunch of old motors, of all sizes and makes, and it's def helped out.
For example, I had a '95 Mitsu Montero I bought with 135k miles on it and burned about a quart of oil a week! After using Engine Restore during oil changes, after about 3 or 4 oil changes it went down to about a 1/2 quart a month and ran much better, plus improved fuel economy.
typhoon5000 2 years ago
and those oil changes were very 3k miles BTW.
typhoon5000 2 years ago
Every 3k is pretty excessive and expensive. Most new cars, or oil I should say, doesn't require you to change your oil until at least 7.5k miles.
3k miles really applies to changing your oil back in the day. Today, most oils sold will last you 5k miles at the very least.
WillTam08 2 years ago 2
das is tru ya
notthehulk442 2 years ago
Except I'm talking about high mileage cars here, since Engine Restore would be required and on older vehicles and higher mileage vehicles, it's best to do you oil changes often, like at 3k miles no matter what oil you use.
typhoon5000 2 years ago
An older motor that already needs Engine Restore will be pretty beat and most likely have quite a bit of sludge and carbon build up in it. This is what contaminates your oil, making it turn black and reducing it's lubrication performance. So keeping the oil fresh will keep the engine lubricated properly and help it perform better and last longer.
typhoon5000 2 years ago
Even with old motors, there is really no need to change the motor oil every 3k miles. You're really wasting the oil if you plan to dump it after 3k.
You could drain the oil after 3k and it'll look no where near worn. It'll practically look the same as when you put it in. The oil we used today is nothing like the types of oils that were available in the 80s.
Also be careful about using those engine restore, the last thing you want is for that stuff to slip into any bearings.
WillTam08 2 years ago 4
I can tell you that on every car I've owned (all 90k+ miles) has had black oil after 3k miles and def shows signs that it needs changing. I have also tried out all kinds of oil brands, and I never buy cheap generic brand oil either. Some of these cars don't burn any oil either. They're just an older design that doesn't have as tight of tolerances as newer motors have.
typhoon5000 2 years ago
I understand where you're coming from, but that only really applies to more recent engine designs. My newest car is 7 years old, but the engine was designed in the early 90's.
typhoon5000 2 years ago
Nice, I would have seafoamed it personaly and since the car is going to be tracked stainless steal breaklines are a must..
radzieta 2 years ago
You make a valid point for weekend track or race cars, but since it's not going to be tracked regularly, just a few laps around for our test, and since we're only performing Factory-recommended maintenance and not a performance upgrade, stainless steel brake lines aren't necessary.
TheSmokingTire 2 years ago
new tires weren't part of regular maintenance? the tires that came on that 12v VR are trash. Understandably they will not affect the dyno, however they will make ur lap times all sorts of trashy.
love the show. nice guitar too .
shadowmilkman 2 years ago
we will adress that issue in part 3 :)
TheSmokingTire 2 years ago
Lolz if you think those are shot brakes LMAO those are just a little glazed easily resurfaced at your local parts store. But replacing is never a bad thing. If you think of it glazed brakes will make the squeaking noise and will not stop as well because they don't produce enough friction resurfacing removed material so your brakes become thinner so replacing them to really abuse it is really a good thing because your less likely to crack or warp them because they are too thin.
arabrockerman 2 years ago
My benz has got 328k miles on it no surprise the compression is weak. I was gonna just wait and drop some new rings in or just get another engine and drop it in. But I don't got ANY extra time now between working and going to school 17 hours.
Bottom line I have reletivly crappy compression I didn't know this stuff existed no time to rebuild/replace I'm gonna have to try some of that stuff out.
arabrockerman 2 years ago
It may or may not work, if your car is really broken, then it's going to be a temporary fix at best, but it's worth a try before you spend hundreds/thousands on a rebuild.
TheSmokingTire 2 years ago
Ya it runs fine but its a little hard starting and on a diesel thats usually compression.
I rering it myself and do all that other crap so thats not a problem. But its more of a time issue. It'll take atleast a full day to pull the engine out rebuild it and put it back in usually two because the machine shop takes its time resurfacing the head.
A temp fix would be great for now. those engines are known for going 500k without rebuild but most people run them a long time on bad comp
arabrockerman 2 years ago
OK, well I didn't check one way or the other, but if it's a diesel you may want to use a different product than I used, just check the bottle before you dump it in :)
