pharmacy. but, have you ever considered doing an activity such as yoga or meditation to assist with your condition. it may help with your nerves. all the best.
Thankfully, since making this video, I have been able to conquer a large chunk of my fear these days. Obviously, I still don't like it, but it doesn't effect me on a day to day basis. I do meditate from time to time due to my spiritual beliefs, which has really helps.
I visited your page, and I really liked what you say in your profile! x
youve bin through the depression and emetophobia before?
have you gotten through it now? or even just the depression? because i would really like to get through it but i dont think it will go :( im so scared and upset all the time.. im sick of everything. x
hell yes, I've been through it all before. I have suffered from emetophobia since I was about 5 or 6, if not sooner - and there have been times where it has been REALLY bad. Really, really bad. I remember a few years ago, I had some gastro-problem, where I felt sick ALL the time. I was in hell. I couldn't sleep at night, because of the fear. So, not only was I panicking all the time, I felt like there was no escape. In the end, I had to go to my doctor and get sleeping tablets, which not only....
help me sleep, but it also eased my stomach, and everything seemed ok again. Bliss. However, the next day, it all started again. I dont know how much of it was due to the sense of panic all the time, but either way, it was horrible.
But, through time, I gradually managed to get better. I stopped eating heavy foods, and I made sure I drank no caffiene, and over time, I changed my thought patterns. I am not saying I am 100% better, but I can get through the day without panic....
Well i have hemophobia which is when your scared of blood and i started boxing.sometimes i or the other person bleed.bieng around the blood made me get used to it. im still scared of large amounts of blood but i used to get scared just by seeing a drop.

I really don't know how it started. I guess it's because I'm used to seeing things alive and usually babies are alive. I can handle looking at a dead person, just not a baby or animals.
I have to say, I don't think you are all that unusual really. I don't think anybody likes to see anything dead - but what actually makes yours a phobia?
When I used to run in cross country, I would run past roadkill and a couple times I actually screamed. I am afraid of dead things. That's what makes it a phobia. But I think what really started everything was a rabbit's head I saw on my neighbor's porch. The rest of its body was scattered around too. Their cat got ahold of it.
I have OCD with anxiety disorder, and my greatest phobia is throwing up. I have had this phobia since around age 5 (I am twenty now) and I will probably have it for the rest of my life. In one way, its quite sad to know that there are some many people out there being ruled by their fear, but in another way, its nice to know that I'm not alone. I'm like you, and thought I had got over it to an extent, but then a few years ago, I got gastric flu or something, and I was in my own personal hell...
and ever since then, I am always thinking about it. A week yesterday, I had to face my fear, when a work colleague was sick - I saw it, and ran in the opposite direction, ran upstairs and had a panic attack. It was a horrible day. Its hard, because every time I feel slightly unwell, like a headache, I wonder whether I'm getting a migrane, with then can lead to sickness. Or I eat something and I get indigestion, and wonder if I'm gonna get sick. Its very frustrating.
Hell yeah. That's me too. Wow. I had a flu that sent me to the hospital last month, and I had a 104.6 degree Fever. I had the worst nausea and intestinal distress, i've ever had and i fought and fought for hours. I've gone downhill since.
Funny becuase yesterday I was driving home from eating out, and I had some indegestion in my stomach. My hands started to sweat, and i started seeing stars or floaters in my eyes. I was shaking in the car with fear that i'd have to be sick in the car.
Ouch, that doesnt sound pleasant at all. I hope you're feeling better now. When I wasnt too well a couple of years ago, I kept going to the doctors and complaining about not feeling well, but all they wanted to do was put me on anti-depressants. Which is not what a needed at all. I dont like the pills they give me because of all the side effects. Anyway... after several months of this and suffering insomnia, the doc decided it must be IBS...
I had had blood tests to check for the Heliocopactor Pylori bug in my gut.. and that had come back as "borderline", and because it wasnt either one way or the other, she wasnt prepared to treat me for it. So, in not many words, I was told to go away and suffer because she had no other suggestions. The UK's National Health Service is a complete joke, in case you hadn't figured that out already. Anyway... after that, I decided to treat myself the natural way.. and I havent looked back since!
I dont know anything about the UK's National Health service becuase I am from the U.S., but i know it completely sucks here. My ex's parents from England who moved here years ago, always talked about how wonderful england was and how everything here was hell. So that was the only thing i ever heard about England. hahhahahah.. From the over bearing, cocky inlaws. Thank god I dont have to see them anymore. Paul Gambaccini is my cousin though, so i have no excuse not to know. ahhahaah.
and i am 12 years old ive had its a long time but i started panick attacks and feelin sick everyday since early 11 years old but so ive had it for about 1 year or even half of one please can u help or give tips ?
i have to go to school but i am scared i dont know why but i hate being sick n fear it everyday. :(
Thank you for your comment. I wish I had tips to help anybody, but I can't think of any that you might not have thought of yourself already. I struggle through each day like everyone else with this phobia. I am careful with what I eat. I dont go on fairground rides. If someone is ill, I try and keep my distance. I'm always checking dates on food to check its still ok. The only thing that I know works, is deep, controlled breathing. Try it, its very calming. I hope this helps x
I also have emetophobia..its horrible 2 live with but with the rite help it will get better i also do things like restrict my eating before going somewere its horrible but 1 thing as strange as it sounds did actualy help.. rather than exposing urself 2 vomit etc get a bucket/bowl and mix loads of foods and drinks (it will look grossly like sick) and when ur first looking at it may bring up the fear but after a while becomes kinda boring 2 look at and u realise it is only food & drink..try itx
Thanks for the comment. It is a horrible thing to live with, yes. I have suffered from it for as long as I remember. But it got REALLY bad a few years ago after a bout of gastric flu. It went on for months, and I found it so difficult. I wasnt sleeping, and eating very little.
But, I'm doing alot better now, although I still know I wouldnt want to see it happening...
Well my sister has always had a weak stomach and i never did so i would hear her being sick and i never knew what it felt like but i knew it was horrible because she'd cry and my mum would shout "get her some water" so i guess it was a fear of the unknown then when i was actualy sick i realised how horrible it was and have had a fear ever since..glad to hear your doing well im on the road to recovery so hopefuly lifes looking up =D..how did urs start? Georgie x
I have a phobia with knives and other sharp objects.I was cut up really bad during a rape, and was also stabbed during a robbery.I've had to force myself to come to terms with it,but still have trouble occasionally.
So sorry for not replying.. I swear I had replied, but obviously not.
I totally understand what you mean. Life is a challenge every day. But I force myself to think positively, and try not to limit myself. I am a lot better than I used to be!
I have about anti-sickness tablets, but I asked my Dr about them, and she tried to make out that no such tablet exist. but then again, my Dr was a bit crap. :-)
Yeah doctors play dumb about this for some reason, maybe becuase sometimes you have to throw up and you could die if you dont, but, sometimes, when i feel sick, i'd rather die then throw up. Its an enormous fear. I've not thrown up since i was in 3rd grade and now i am 30. That's many years. Though i've been very close, i've still not found these pills.
I have a fear of worms which probably stems back to being tormented by my brother with the darn things when I was little. I cant even see them on tv without wanting to throw up. As you can probably imagine, I dont do gardening :)
I have the same phobia as you.. and it's horrible. What I really hate is that people don't seem to understand that it is truly TRAUMATIZING to me, and not just some silly little fear. A few people have told me that I just had to be exposed to it more and I'd miraculously get over it.... doesn't exactly work that way, though. I've read that it's usually counter-productive.
It's great to meet someone else like me. I totally understand what you are going through. I have always had trouble getting my family and friends to fully understand the extent of my fear, but they just see it as a regular fear.. but its far more than that....
I will do pretty much ANYTHING to avoid actually being sick. I can feel so ill that I can't focus, but I will still stop myself.
I have even gone as far as to say that if I was ever told that I had to be sick, or die, I would sooner choose the latter - that is the extent of my fear.
Yes, all of it! I will also do anything and everything I can to avoid vomiting... I haven't done it for fifteen years now, even though I know I got food poisoning and the stomach bug a few times since then. It's amazing how good we can be at preventing it.
Between being sick and dying, I'd probably choose being sick... but only just BARELY. Maybe not at the time I'm exposed to it though... every time it happens, the first thought that goes through my head is how much I envy the dead and how I wish I could join them.
But as bad as my phobia is, it's not SO bad that I can't function "normally" in my day to day life. However, I tend to have really... unusual habits that some people find annoying, like throwing out leftovers too early, compulsively checking expiration dates, avoiding large groups of children or drunk people like the plague, pestering everyone before and during road trips to find out who might get carsick... silly stuff like that.
I am EXACTLY like you with all those "annoying" habits.
If something is out of date by one day, I will not eat it. I dont like being around drunk people. If I know someone isnt feeling too well, I WILL avoid them. If we go on a car journey and someone says they dont feel well, I will not go.
A couple of years ago, I had gastroenteritis which left me feeling sick ALL the time. I kept going to the doctors complaining of this, but all they wanted to do was to put me on antidepressants. Eventually, she gave in and offered me some sleeping tablets, because I wasnt sleeping due to the panic. It was really nice, because within 15 mins, I was chilled and tired, and fell asleep...
Yeah, It's the way they glide on the ground that terrifies me. Watched a documentary about some desert snake, that glides in the sand. Couldn't watch, they are so frikkin fast :-)
When I was 5 or 6 years old, one of cousins owned a zoo, and I'd go there regularly, and I'd have snakes draped over our shoulders, and tarantulas crawling over my hands.
Strangely enough, it never bothered me then... but the thought of a spider coming into any kind of contact with me now is horrific.
That is a big problem with emetophobia, as it isnt just the one fear - it effects so many different aspects of daily life. There was a time when I wouldnt want to go out the house, as I would have panic attacks, because the outside world seemed so vast and unwelcoming. I still dont like using public transport, as I dont want to feel trapped on a train or anything...
But, you'll be glad to know that I still force myself to do it, because I dont want to be like this forever. It's not a nice experience, but I do it anyway. But if I touch anything, I do not touch my face before I get to wash my hands
I wanted to make my video after this week gone by, as in the UK, there is a sickness bug going around, to the point that hospital wards are being closed to new patients. So it has been on my mind a lot.
It has only been most discussed and top rated because I keep replying to comments! lol
When I was about 18/19 I was suddenly 'immersed' in my phobic objects — I found myself in a tunnel of daddy-long-legs — I'm talking thousands upon thousands. Now that's saturation therapy for you! It made me question a lot of my preconceptions about what would happen — they didn't fly off the walls and 'get me' — they weren't interested in my at all. After that I found two things personally helped me a lot ....
1) a realistic appraisal, away from the phobic objects, of what would/might happen, and what were just absolute fantasies — eg, the insects' sole purpose is to 'get me'.
2) recognising the self-perpetuating cycle of fear and avoidance. The more I avoided, the greater the fear grew, but when I walked towards fear, it shrank back — gradually to nothing.
A third thing I found useful was imagining myself beyond the actual phobic event — eg a spider springing onto me. When I was phobic, I was fixed *on* the event, but looking *beyond* it I said to myself, 'yes I'd probably be startled but then what?' I found constantly projecting myself beyond the event really reduced my anticipatory anxiety. So that's how I coped — I know we're all different, and our phobias touch different parts of us. Best wishes and be interested to hear your progress.
First of all, I am really grateful for your comprehensive and insightful view. It certainly made me think. You are a clever chap, and no mistake! lol. One thing that I wonder is, how did you find yourself in a tunnel full of daddy long legs in the first place? Even though I'm not too bothered by them, I don't think I would have enjoyed the experience much either! I hope you kept your mouth closed!...
I suppose I can see the logic behind facing up to a phobia in order to overcome it, but with emetophobia, there are no half measures. You are either being sick, or you're not. And the thought of actually making myself sick is too much to contemplate.
Doing some research online about emetophobia, it is documented that it is one of the most common phobias and yet one of the most difficult to treat. Makes yer sick dunnit? lol
Hey Pierz. Well, I was just walking through a short tunnel to a lecture hall with someone. I thought the tunnel was brown — they said no, it's white. I looked at the walls — they were *covered* in daddy-long-legs. I can well imagine emetophobia being less straightforward — being such an intrinsically physical experience, as opposed to removed phobic objects like pigeons or spiders.
You said there are no half-measures with your phobia — you're either sick or you're not ....
.... but I'm wondering if there are in fact *some* possible half-measures, eg, in seeing other people being sick, or in visualising yourself being sick in a focussed way? I'm *not* trying to take you on as a client here! ;8) Just looking at whether there might be several useful sub-measures — ie anything that simply 'arouses' your fear — that allow you some staggered gradation of low to high aversiveness, up to actually 'being' sick?
It seems like such a bitter irony that treatment for phobia is by approaching the phobic object! It would be great to just be able to 'reason it out' wouldn't it?? But the choice seems to remain: find ways of living with the phobia, or confront the tiresome bugger. Since getting over my insect phobia, I now personally see phobias as psychological bullies, trying to make me live in fear/apprehension, and that actually *immediately* pisses me off — I won't be bullied! ;8)
The whole experience sounds horrible. Makes me shudder. lol.
Being emetophobic is possibly one of the worst phobias to have, as it effects so many different aspects of your life. It isnt just the one phobia, and all the other things you limit yourself with, to avoid any possible situation that might trigger you off.
I don't really have 'phobias' as such but I have anxiety problems at times. So cant really be of much help mate, sorry ;) Hope ur doin well over ur way!
Certain times I dnt want to go 'out' around ppl in public so to speak, heights r pretty bad yet I love planes. Dnt like confined spaces, yet I prefer to be in my home with dark curtains & stuff! Havin said that I love going out with mates but socializing in itself isn't something I enjoy 100% but I do enjoy it.
Hard to explain. Got a great cirlce of mates but I just dont go to events & stuff a lot. Some days worse than others.
Gone through it for yrs & yrs but tend to keep a hold of it luckily.
I can also talk myself into it uknow, like a build'up thing, that can make it worse than what it is.
But no1 would ever guess I have anxiety problems every so often, that's where I'm lucky I guess. It does hold me up at times but generally I overpower it. We're weird creatures huh lol! X
I would, but from what I have heard, with a phobia like this, the make you go through the very thing you are terrified of, so I would rather die. Silly I know!
IS this a genuine paralysing phobia or just the normal fear of possible choking or not being able to breath or aspirating while vomitting in your case? As nobody sane enjoys it, and a good healthy dislike and fear of it is normal.
It is an actual paralysing phobia, It might sound a little over-dramatic, but if someone was to ask me to either choose to either vomit or die, I'd choose the second option. It is that bad. I will do anything I can think of to avoid it. It doesnt have to be me vomiting either. If someone else is sick around me, I will run as far away as I can from them.....
...I cannot be near anyone who is sick. I dont like the sound, the smell, the look or anything. The very thought of it makes me go all funny inside, like my knees go weak and I feel a little faint. If someone I care about is sick, I cannot care for them either. Its a serious problem!
I think if I can think of a possible reason why I don't like so much, is because its the feeling losing control of my body for that moment. Also, the knowing that once you've been sick once, there is most likely more to come, so its a horrible waiting game.
Sounds like it's mixed with a form of anxiety disorder too. Interesting, ever had any form of therapy for it? oh and never get a job in the ambulance service = probably a very bad idea.
Yes, definitely. I have anxiety attacks too - not so much now, but I have in the past.
I did try therapy once, but they therapist said after 4 weeks that she wasn't experienced enough to deal with some of my issues, and that she would forward my details onto someone who could.. then I was put a waiting list, which was too long, and I lost interest.
There was a time in the not so distant past, when I wouldnt travel anywhere for the fear of being trapped on a vehicle, thats how bad it got. I still have a problem with coaches and trains, but i just do things to distract me.
emeto is greek for vomit!! i can't really remember ever vomitting... maybe only a few times. i did have an opperation on my stomache when i was a little baby bcos i kept thrwoing up milk.
i hate spiders and creepy crawlies, and i hate the thought of falling from hights (im not scared of hights - just the thought of FALLING from them)
I didnt know that emeto was greek for vomit. interesting!
I am not too fond of spiders either, as you know, and heights is also a problem for me too - but I think its all tied into the fear of vomiting though. See, if I was to be up high, and I were to vomit, the force would push me over the edge and I'd fall and die... or at least thats what I'd think would happen!
It is very complex really when you really think about it
well, I must be beyond physics, as the last time I was sick, I remember, the force was so strong that it propelled me forwards and onto my knees - HA! so there! lol.
Yes, you could help me with my phobia once you're a psychologist, but that would be a very expensive appointment, as I would have to travel to Oz!! lol
@DanielleSoares OMG =O thats so scary =( cry when vomit noahhhh! well being to u! i hope u wont get sick ever thats so bad. I kionda fear vomiting but i dont cry.

I work in a high rise apartment building in downtown Sydney and i met guest last night who was terrified of elevators!
He refused the accept that the fire stair door would cause a fire alarm and building evacuation! Poor thing!

I was shaking in the car with fear that i'd have to be sick in the car.
mgenigma5 3 years ago
Ouch, that doesnt sound pleasant at all. I hope you're feeling better now. When I wasnt too well a couple of years ago, I kept going to the doctors and complaining about not feeling well, but all they wanted to do was put me on anti-depressants. Which is not what a needed at all. I dont like the pills they give me because of all the side effects. Anyway... after several months of this and suffering insomnia, the doc decided it must be IBS...
pierz1981 3 years ago
I had had blood tests to check for the Heliocopactor Pylori bug in my gut.. and that had come back as "borderline", and because it wasnt either one way or the other, she wasnt prepared to treat me for it. So, in not many words, I was told to go away and suffer because she had no other suggestions. The UK's National Health Service is a complete joke, in case you hadn't figured that out already. Anyway... after that, I decided to treat myself the natural way.. and I havent looked back since!
pierz1981 3 years ago
I dont know anything about the UK's National Health service becuase I am from the U.S., but i know it completely sucks here. My ex's parents from England who moved here years ago, always talked about how wonderful england was and how everything here was hell. So that was the only thing i ever heard about England. hahhahahah.. From the over bearing, cocky inlaws. Thank god I dont have to see them anymore. Paul Gambaccini is my cousin though, so i have no excuse not to know. ahhahaah.

Hi Amy,
Thank you for your comment. I hope this helps x
pierz1981 3 years ago
I also have emetophobia..its horrible 2 live with but with the rite help it will get better i also do things like restrict my eating before going somewere its horrible but 1 thing as strange as it sounds did actualy help.. rather than exposing urself 2 vomit etc get a bucket/bowl and mix loads of foods and drinks (it will look grossly like sick) and when ur first looking at it may bring up the fear but after a while becomes kinda boring 2 look at and u realise it is only food & drink..try itx
georgiepies 4 years ago
Hi Georgie (I'm guessing thats your name!)
Thanks for the comment. It is a horrible thing to live with, yes. I have suffered from it for as long as I remember. But it got REALLY bad a few years ago after a bout of gastric flu. It went on for months, and I found it so difficult. I wasnt sleeping, and eating very little.
But, I'm doing alot better now, although I still know I wouldnt want to see it happening...
pierz1981 4 years ago
but on the whole, I am a hell of alot better than I was. So thats good.
Do you rememeber when it started for you, or even why?
pierz1981 4 years ago
Well my sister has always had a weak stomach and i never did so i would hear her being sick and i never knew what it felt like but i knew it was horrible because she'd cry and my mum would shout "get her some water" so i guess it was a fear of the unknown then when i was actualy sick i realised how horrible it was and have had a fear ever since..glad to hear your doing well im on the road to recovery so hopefuly lifes looking up =D..how did urs start? Georgie x

I have a phobia with knives and other sharp objects.I was cut up really bad during a rape, and was also stabbed during a robbery.I've had to force myself to come to terms with it,but still have trouble occasionally.
kevinwichkid 4 years ago
Hi!
So sorry for not replying.. I swear I had replied, but obviously not.
I totally understand what you mean. Life is a challenge every day. But I force myself to think positively, and try not to limit myself. I am a lot better than I used to be!
pierz1981 4 years ago
I have about anti-sickness tablets, but I asked my Dr about them, and she tried to make out that no such tablet exist. but then again, my Dr was a bit crap. :-)
I hope you're having a great day! x
pierz1981 4 years ago
Yeah doctors play dumb about this for some reason, maybe becuase sometimes you have to throw up and you could die if you dont, but, sometimes, when i feel sick, i'd rather die then throw up. Its an enormous fear. I've not thrown up since i was in 3rd grade and now i am 30. That's many years. Though i've been very close, i've still not found these pills.
mgenigma5 3 years ago
I have a fear of worms which probably stems back to being tormented by my brother with the darn things when I was little. I cant even see them on tv without wanting to throw up. As you can probably imagine, I dont do gardening :)
Elfins 4 years ago
Phobias are weird.
I have never liked worms much. i can look at them no problem, but I hate picking them up... so in a way, I can understand your fear!
Thanks for commenting!
pierz1981 4 years ago
I have the same phobia as you.. and it's horrible. What I really hate is that people don't seem to understand that it is truly TRAUMATIZING to me, and not just some silly little fear. A few people have told me that I just had to be exposed to it more and I'd miraculously get over it.... doesn't exactly work that way, though. I've read that it's usually counter-productive.
hercrabbiness 4 years ago
Hi.
Thanks for dropping by,
It's great to meet someone else like me. I totally understand what you are going through. I have always had trouble getting my family and friends to fully understand the extent of my fear, but they just see it as a regular fear.. but its far more than that....
pierz1981 4 years ago
I will do pretty much ANYTHING to avoid actually being sick. I can feel so ill that I can't focus, but I will still stop myself.
I have even gone as far as to say that if I was ever told that I had to be sick, or die, I would sooner choose the latter - that is the extent of my fear.
pierz1981 4 years ago
Is any of this making any sense to you?
pierz1981 4 years ago
Yes, all of it! I will also do anything and everything I can to avoid vomiting... I haven't done it for fifteen years now, even though I know I got food poisoning and the stomach bug a few times since then. It's amazing how good we can be at preventing it.
hercrabbiness 4 years ago
Between being sick and dying, I'd probably choose being sick... but only just BARELY. Maybe not at the time I'm exposed to it though... every time it happens, the first thought that goes through my head is how much I envy the dead and how I wish I could join them.
hercrabbiness 4 years ago
But as bad as my phobia is, it's not SO bad that I can't function "normally" in my day to day life. However, I tend to have really... unusual habits that some people find annoying, like throwing out leftovers too early, compulsively checking expiration dates, avoiding large groups of children or drunk people like the plague, pestering everyone before and during road trips to find out who might get carsick... silly stuff like that.
hercrabbiness 4 years ago
I am EXACTLY like you with all those "annoying" habits.
If something is out of date by one day, I will not eat it. I dont like being around drunk people. If I know someone isnt feeling too well, I WILL avoid them. If we go on a car journey and someone says they dont feel well, I will not go.
pierz1981 4 years ago
A couple of years ago, I had gastroenteritis which left me feeling sick ALL the time. I kept going to the doctors complaining of this, but all they wanted to do was to put me on antidepressants. Eventually, she gave in and offered me some sleeping tablets, because I wasnt sleeping due to the panic. It was really nice, because within 15 mins, I was chilled and tired, and fell asleep...

My mother going to the other side before she knows the truth about me. That's the worst fear I have ever had.
Other then that. Uhm, snakes? :-)
Nilseman 4 years ago
Hey, thanks for commenting Nils,
I hope you can build up the courage to tell your mother before that happens!
Snakes eh? I can understand that. Not that snakes bother me, but I am very aware of their dangers!
pierz1981 4 years ago
Yeah, It's the way they glide on the ground that terrifies me. Watched a documentary about some desert snake, that glides in the sand. Couldn't watch, they are so frikkin fast :-)
Nilseman 4 years ago
When I was 5 or 6 years old, one of cousins owned a zoo, and I'd go there regularly, and I'd have snakes draped over our shoulders, and tarantulas crawling over my hands.
Strangely enough, it never bothered me then... but the thought of a spider coming into any kind of contact with me now is horrific.
pierz1981 4 years ago
Hi Renee, is it?
That is a big problem with emetophobia, as it isnt just the one fear - it effects so many different aspects of daily life. There was a time when I wouldnt want to go out the house, as I would have panic attacks, because the outside world seemed so vast and unwelcoming. I still dont like using public transport, as I dont want to feel trapped on a train or anything...
pierz1981 4 years ago
But, you'll be glad to know that I still force myself to do it, because I dont want to be like this forever. It's not a nice experience, but I do it anyway. But if I touch anything, I do not touch my face before I get to wash my hands
pierz1981 4 years ago
There are so many other things that I think about on a daily basis, but I cant possibly write them all down.. otherwise I'd be here all day!
Anyway - thanks for your input and comments! :-)
pierz1981 4 years ago
Thank you Tracy.
I wanted to make my video after this week gone by, as in the UK, there is a sickness bug going around, to the point that hospital wards are being closed to new patients. So it has been on my mind a lot.
It has only been most discussed and top rated because I keep replying to comments! lol
pierz1981 4 years ago
When I was about 18/19 I was suddenly 'immersed' in my phobic objects — I found myself in a tunnel of daddy-long-legs — I'm talking thousands upon thousands. Now that's saturation therapy for you! It made me question a lot of my preconceptions about what would happen — they didn't fly off the walls and 'get me' — they weren't interested in my at all. After that I found two things personally helped me a lot ....
TheraminTrees 4 years ago
1) a realistic appraisal, away from the phobic objects, of what would/might happen, and what were just absolute fantasies — eg, the insects' sole purpose is to 'get me'.
2) recognising the self-perpetuating cycle of fear and avoidance. The more I avoided, the greater the fear grew, but when I walked towards fear, it shrank back — gradually to nothing.
TheraminTrees 4 years ago
A third thing I found useful was imagining myself beyond the actual phobic event — eg a spider springing onto me. When I was phobic, I was fixed *on* the event, but looking *beyond* it I said to myself, 'yes I'd probably be startled but then what?' I found constantly projecting myself beyond the event really reduced my anticipatory anxiety. So that's how I coped — I know we're all different, and our phobias touch different parts of us. Best wishes and be interested to hear your progress.
TheraminTrees 4 years ago
Hi Theramin,
First of all, I am really grateful for your comprehensive and insightful view. It certainly made me think. You are a clever chap, and no mistake! lol. One thing that I wonder is, how did you find yourself in a tunnel full of daddy long legs in the first place? Even though I'm not too bothered by them, I don't think I would have enjoyed the experience much either! I hope you kept your mouth closed!...
pierz1981 4 years ago
Secondly,
I suppose I can see the logic behind facing up to a phobia in order to overcome it, but with emetophobia, there are no half measures. You are either being sick, or you're not. And the thought of actually making myself sick is too much to contemplate.
pierz1981 4 years ago
Doing some research online about emetophobia, it is documented that it is one of the most common phobias and yet one of the most difficult to treat. Makes yer sick dunnit? lol
pierz1981 4 years ago
TheraminTrees 4 years ago
.... but I'm wondering if there are in fact *some* possible half-measures, eg, in seeing other people being sick, or in visualising yourself being sick in a focussed way? I'm *not* trying to take you on as a client here! ;8) Just looking at whether there might be several useful sub-measures — ie anything that simply 'arouses' your fear — that allow you some staggered gradation of low to high aversiveness, up to actually 'being' sick?
TheraminTrees 4 years ago
It seems like such a bitter irony that treatment for phobia is by approaching the phobic object! It would be great to just be able to 'reason it out' wouldn't it?? But the choice seems to remain: find ways of living with the phobia, or confront the tiresome bugger. Since getting over my insect phobia, I now personally see phobias as psychological bullies, trying to make me live in fear/apprehension, and that actually *immediately* pisses me off — I won't be bullied! ;8)
TheraminTrees 4 years ago
Hi Theramin,
thanks for replying.
The whole experience sounds horrible. Makes me shudder. lol.
Being emetophobic is possibly one of the worst phobias to have, as it effects so many different aspects of your life. It isnt just the one phobia, and all the other things you limit yourself with, to avoid any possible situation that might trigger you off.
pierz1981 4 years ago
I'll be interested to hear your progress with this Pierz. Best wishes. ;8)
TheraminTrees 4 years ago
I don't really have 'phobias' as such but I have anxiety problems at times. So cant really be of much help mate, sorry ;) Hope ur doin well over ur way!
Kruizinby 4 years ago
Hey Anna,
Thanks for your comments. Don't worry about not being "helpful" as such.. the very fact that you didnt laugh in my face about it is help in itself.
I have anxiety problems too, so I know what you're going through too. What triggers your anxiety then?
pierz1981 4 years ago
Certain times I dnt want to go 'out' around ppl in public so to speak, heights r pretty bad yet I love planes. Dnt like confined spaces, yet I prefer to be in my home with dark curtains & stuff! Havin said that I love going out with mates but socializing in itself isn't something I enjoy 100% but I do enjoy it.
Hard to explain. Got a great cirlce of mates but I just dont go to events & stuff a lot. Some days worse than others.
Gone through it for yrs & yrs but tend to keep a hold of it luckily.
Kruizinby 4 years ago
I can also talk myself into it uknow, like a build'up thing, that can make it worse than what it is.
But no1 would ever guess I have anxiety problems every so often, that's where I'm lucky I guess. It does hold me up at times but generally I overpower it. We're weird creatures huh lol! X
Kruizinby 4 years ago
LOL!
I would, but from what I have heard, with a phobia like this, the make you go through the very thing you are terrified of, so I would rather die. Silly I know!
pierz1981 4 years ago
IS this a genuine paralysing phobia or just the normal fear of possible choking or not being able to breath or aspirating while vomitting in your case? As nobody sane enjoys it, and a good healthy dislike and fear of it is normal.
5* NOw bloody answer and make more Piers!
Gigolo8 4 years ago
It is an actual paralysing phobia, It might sound a little over-dramatic, but if someone was to ask me to either choose to either vomit or die, I'd choose the second option. It is that bad. I will do anything I can think of to avoid it. It doesnt have to be me vomiting either. If someone else is sick around me, I will run as far away as I can from them.....
pierz1981 4 years ago
...I cannot be near anyone who is sick. I dont like the sound, the smell, the look or anything. The very thought of it makes me go all funny inside, like my knees go weak and I feel a little faint. If someone I care about is sick, I cannot care for them either. Its a serious problem!
pierz1981 4 years ago
I think if I can think of a possible reason why I don't like so much, is because its the feeling losing control of my body for that moment. Also, the knowing that once you've been sick once, there is most likely more to come, so its a horrible waiting game.
pierz1981 4 years ago
Sounds like it's mixed with a form of anxiety disorder too. Interesting, ever had any form of therapy for it? oh and never get a job in the ambulance service = probably a very bad idea.
Gigolo8 4 years ago
Yes, definitely. I have anxiety attacks too - not so much now, but I have in the past.
I did try therapy once, but they therapist said after 4 weeks that she wasn't experienced enough to deal with some of my issues, and that she would forward my details onto someone who could.. then I was put a waiting list, which was too long, and I lost interest.
pierz1981 4 years ago
There was a time in the not so distant past, when I wouldnt travel anywhere for the fear of being trapped on a vehicle, thats how bad it got. I still have a problem with coaches and trains, but i just do things to distract me.

emeto is greek for vomit!! i can't really remember ever vomitting... maybe only a few times. i did have an opperation on my stomache when i was a little baby bcos i kept thrwoing up milk.
i hate spiders and creepy crawlies, and i hate the thought of falling from hights (im not scared of hights - just the thought of FALLING from them)
Sikosm 4 years ago
Hey Saz!
Thanks for commenting! Woohoo!
It is very complex really when you really think about it
pierz1981 4 years ago
lol actually, vomitting would probably propel u BACKWARDS! did u do physics lol? :-P
phobias are complex! maybe when im a fully-fledged psychologist i can counsel both of us out of our phobias! lol
Sikosm 4 years ago
well, I must be beyond physics, as the last time I was sick, I remember, the force was so strong that it propelled me forwards and onto my knees - HA! so there! lol.
Yes, you could help me with my phobia once you're a psychologist, but that would be a very expensive appointment, as I would have to travel to Oz!! lol
