Documentaries can't get any better than this. Amazing great apes and a hot scientist babe... :D Sorry, just had to say this even though it's got nothing to do with anything lol.
@lilreinniita ....... Penny is a very good mother to Koko! She has dedicated her whole life to raising Koko. I think she knows what is best for Koko and how to teach Koko to behave... As a mother she will ProTect Koko from hurting herself or anyones eles.. or just from getting into trouble. sometimes that can mean using force...any Good mother would do this... I think they have a very strong bond and Penny loves Koko like her own child as does koko luv her as a mother !!!
@biskut0024 Well, we humanize human children too... Just watch little children, they aren't much different from Koko in terms of behaviour. And so are humans that grow up in the wild without human contact. In fact "culturalize" might be a better word. Whether it's right or wrong I don't know.
@aymbot4gaming Penny isn't a surrogate mother. There is a small society, I saw about it on TV that the adults there wouldn't hit their children when they cross the line and in that society, it's alot calmer and nicer, but they're not rich or big or anything like that.
Remember she's only 5 here so she was going to act up more and she didn't know as much. Just like a human child. Presently, in 2011, she's now 40 years old. She was still immature back then...if you watch videos of her now you can see how she's grown emotionally and behaviorally (lol physically too) since then.
I think Koko should be allowed to choose how she wants to live her own life. If she wants to live with other Gorillas that's great, if she wants to continue living the way she has been then that's fine too. She knows sign language, just ask her.
@Killman1134 not really. listen to what he's saying. he wants the animals to be as wild as possible. koko and the rest are just fucking experiments, there's nothing natural about a gorilla that knows sign language. it's cute and interesting to us, but its unfair to them.
I agree with the guy at the beginning. I think she would've been way happier in a wild setting with more gorillas. She doesn't look very happy when that lady is constantly talking to her and egging her to learn learn lean words.
"we of course in zoos atmept to treat them as normal animals, and leave them as wild as they possibly could be left"... yeh those stairs look really wild and natural.. 2:25
@scaIpeI that has advantages and disadvantages. She is concerned with Koko and that is a good thing. They go along very well but I do think they should have finished the project earlier. so that she could become a normal gorilla mother.
nobodys getting upset because of a smack.. theyre getting upset because these people arent allowing gorillas to behave naturally... they are sacrificing what the gorillas want to do, for scientific study.. nothing more.. and they are doing their work with alot of unnecesary bullshit added.. and these gorillas dont like it obviously.. call me a hippy animal rights nut all you want.. im used to dumb fuckers making up names for me because i have common sense
wow that zoo's gorilla habbitat looks EXACTLY like their natural one! :| I'm glad Penny got a foundation & bought her so she didnt have to stay at that zoo
she loves enjoying the attention of media for her own power rather than really caring about the Gorilla. That Gorilla became her slave and not enjoying the normal life as other Gorillas in the nature. Establishing a community of Gorillas to use words and signs!!! It is a crazy idea of her which would not have any success at the end. Evolution is not a childish mind's game. It needs millions of years at least.
@behzadaghabeigi media has it's purpose. aren't you overreacting? the experiment takes 2 hours a day. and proves apes like that are smarter than we think. she created a band with this gorilla, and I can see she treated her well. in one part we can see dr. francine get angry and slaps koko 2 or 3 times, this may sound cruel but by gorilla's its the same approuch her real mother would do.
you should see animals forced to animate other people, that is real slavery!
@maachilosa The first priority of Earth human beings to help our kind in order not to die of hunger, war, dictatorships, poverty , lack of education, etc. When we have a proper society then all animal rights would be protected. For sure KOKO was enjoying more in her own community rather than with humanity.
@behzadaghabeigi Koko was born in captivity. She is no more part of "the gorilla community" than any other 2nd-generation immigrant is to their ancestral land.
@behzadaghabeigi of cours she would be happy in her community into the wild, but at least she was treated well. and she has still contact with other gorilla's but I saw (in other documentaries) it's not so easy to put an ape thats raised by humans into a ape community. the risk to be bullied is higher when they are raised by humans. I don't say its impossible its just complicated.
@maachilosa it is too late for her now, she must be looked after well until the end. My point is "Love" exist in all creatures around the world. All can communicate some how with each other and can share love and understanding. But as I said our priority is to get ride of all the suffering existed in our own kind.
@maachilosa It's quite sad to see koko not having a baby yet. I know the research center treats her well but they should have surrounded her with more gorillas or at least put an end to the project. It's a gorilla after all.
@behzadaghabeigi she founded the gorilla foundation also to protect other gorilla's. the purpose of a reservation or santuary is to protect animals from extermination by poachers or to protect those who can't survive in the wild. a reservation is made to imitate animals natural environment.
I wonder if we are intimidated when we see animals acting so "human". We like to think we have left all animals far behind in our evolution, that humans are more divine, have a soul and that is reflected in our culture and our learning, then along comes this gorilla.......So confronting, many feel it is "unnatural" to teach a gorilla to be "human". What should be confronting is not that someone is teaching them, but that they have the capacity to learn.
i love how mike the male gorilla that koko is communicating with. is laughing its head off while koko trys to bash him lol. he thinks its funny, just like any other boy lol.
the gorilla doesnt have to be wild if it doesnt want too. it feels better to interact the way it wants and be with penny. im sure it realizes its different. they must express she is a gorilla regularly. saying a gorilla should be wild and not learn. its like saying we should resort back to caveman times and murder each other every 5 min.
The real issue here is it right to humanise an animal. We have domesticated many animals, keep animals as pets. It would be a tough argument to say otherwise.
his words totally contradict himself... "it was very difficult for me and the zoo to do anything without looking like a bad guy... and i'll probably turn out like a bad guy here too, but that has never bothered me." if it never bothered him to look like a bad guy, why does.n't he do something to get koko back? because apparently the only downside was that he would look like a bad guy. "it was very difficult for me and the zoo to do anything without looking like a bad guy..."
It's an animal at the end of the day. You can't afford to be risky with that kind of ferocity. No matter what we assume they display, or what they seem to be doing, they are not complacent. They are not like us- They have that killer instinct. Their base level of operations is to be a Gorilla, a hunting killing predator. Though they display rudimentary levels of social interaction, we really should not interfere and, I think helping them with their evolution is wrong. They need to do it.
@SomeBlokeLol We're not 'helping them with their evolution' as you put it. If you think this project with Koko is going to impact gorilla evolution then you need to go read a book or something.
I think you're being way too cynical about other animals behavior, not to mention placing humans on a pedestal. We're not that complacent ourselves.
@iamwatchingut, in the wild gorillas slap each other all the time to show affection, and they do it a lot harder than she did, stop accusing her of animal cruelty when you aren't the one working on low pay with no vacations to care for a gorilla.
The zoo owner bugged me, speaking of "zoos attempt to treat them as normal animals and leave them as wild as they possibly can be, 'cuz that's the way I think they should be, that's the way they should be left, but... other people have different opinions" all while standing in front of a cement pit enclosure with a dead tree and a staircase, while tigers and apes roar and scream miserably in the background. There's nothing 'normal' or 'wild' about that, cement is torture on animals.
patterson is a real nutcase. not only does she put her own wishes ahead of what might be best for koko, but as a mother she's also giving different emotional signals in stress situations, which is absolutely irritating (probably not only for me but for koko too).
Its easy to demonize the zoo director but you have to see it like he does. Koko is an animal. As such she can be owned by people and she happened to be owned by the zoo. If the zoo decides that penny is doing something with their property that they dont agree with then they have the right to say stop. I dont agree with it, because the stuff she's doing is some cool shit, but its their property so...
My dogs play fight all the time, they bite and really look like they are trying to hurt each other. That doesn't necessarily mean they are fighting, the gorillas could just be simply playing.
you animal rights people are starting to fucking piss me off. a love tap on the side of the face is fucking NOTHING. in the wild they smack the shit out of one another and with those size arms im sure it would hurt ALOT more. stop your bitching. if she was burning koko with cigarettes or boiling water for fun then yeah you can complain. otherwise...STFU HIPPY!
@NorthWeezy2010 Besides. Penny is treating Koko like she would treat a human child of her own. What is wrong with that? If anything, that shows she truly is seeing Koko not as a pet but as a sentient being, which she most certainly is. To call such an act inhumane would be self contradictory.
@NorthWeezy2010 I agree! And what most people don't understand is that it was the 1970's- that's how many families disciplined their children then, so this woman most likely didn't know better.
The nonsense of the current Zoo Director stepping and saying this program of teaching a couple of Gorilla's to communicate, and so put good thoughts, and kind thoughts into the public's mind, cannot suddenly be reversed. Wherever Koko is it is not 'natural in any way shape or form.
The Zoo Director is sad. Can he not see this is just one or two animals, and can't the zoo afford to continue with this teaching. Koko has all the will if she wanted to get out and away, but she hasn't. That's good!
@mrbluenun agree 100% and i dont know if u noticed this so much, it seems like koko is trying to share her own heritage? ..own...games. ...and that director is a fucking moron..what a fucking moron...koko is happy as is...so however wild or anything she is...is completely ...ugh whats the word...meaningless... koko is totally an individual. and zoo.s are cruel, its like having a slave...they dont know what they are missing...so they think they are happy...koko is depressed when caged is shows
Choosing between the zoo or being Penny's guinea pig is like asking which shit smells worse. Both choices stink.
Penny supposedly keeps KoKo to prove gorillas can communicate so that humans will appreciate and want to save them. If you want humans to appreciate gorillas, show them the clip of the gorilla in the wild who sees his human handler for the first time in eight years and how the gorilla remembers and still loves him. It is very touching. Much more touching than this.
You know lady, you are sick!!!! You , your friends and the whole project are SICK!!! How giriila can be good or bad, human could be but that is only the animal and that is the natural behavior. Teaching the animal very difficult, human stuff is like a torture and all of you guys should go to the JAIL !!!
Intriguing research to give a gorilla human morals and values plus a unnatural relationship with a human being. However, I feel much more would have been gained to acknowledge their natural behavior and accepting why they behave the way they do through sign language communication. Koko was taught what was acceptable by human morals and we did not learn a thing in why she is the way she is. More focus should have been on revelation to Koko on what people have done to her race and her reaction!
@TOEVERYTIME lol no, that would have only been incredibly interesting. This however was not their goal. They have however laid a lot of ground work for another team to do such research some day. This would be a difficult task though.. They need to establish dominance for two reasons, to keep the researcher safe, and to teach the gorilla things. To establish dominance they must force the gorillas to do everything their way.. I suppose the researchers could behave like gorillas though... lol.
woah she slapped koko in the face :/ what a bitch. also they should teach all gorillas to speak in sign so that they can evolve with a language we can understand. I think it would be so much beter if we understood at least one part of the animal kingdom, what they are trying to say. iv always wanted to know what some animals are feeling and this could show us that at least with gorillas :)
The zoo keeper interview seemed ancient to what would be said today, i think he said something along the lines of 'keeping them as wild as can be' then it showed an ape asleep on some concrete steps (how far from their natural emviroment was that) if that was their perception of 'keeping it wild' back in the late 70's then they was certainly out of touch.
Sometimes you have to scold or spank a child to get them to understand they were wrong. Gorillas are about as smart as children so the same methods can work. Also gorillas are a lot tougher than humans so I seriously doubt that little slap hurt Koko. At most I'd say it hurt her feelings, which is good because it showed her that she'd been bad.
P.S. If I just double posted I'm sorry, YouTube is giving me a little trouble at the moment.
this woman is pretty annoying. She treats the gorilla like a little child and is totally overprotective. In this whole documentary KoKo never was left to play on her own...
@martpast1 Well i don't think thats the point. It more related to ''human evolution theory'' as a scientific experiment to see how capable they could be when it comes to understanding & learning to humans.
@alnakhli999 IT TOOK miliions of years for human to achieve the level and U say about fast short cut for ape. its not at all evolution theory. its Your pretending to speak science-like.
The problem with Koko like with all animals raised in captivity, is that it would be ethically wrong to release them in the wild as they would not be able to fend for themselves. Instead they will probably seek human contact and in so doing endanger themseves. Great apes born in captivity were taught survival skills before with varied success. But again, in case of Koko it's probably too late for that. Also, Koko as part of the project promotes better humane treatment of great apes in the wild.
that lady is too attached to the gorilla and is too selfish to let her go. She deserves at least to be with her own kind even if it's in a zoo. It's wrong to try and force human values on animals and then punishing thrm for not following. They have animal instincts what they do can't be bound by human morals. Stupid lady
just imagen a "monkey professor" coming to your home and taking you to his enviroment and trying to teach you to learn "His ways"
and you were in some ways helpless to leave (just like the monkey)... first of all you wouldn't feel comfortable and second you would want to leave.... so just with that in mind can you imagine what the monkey feels like?
see i ask myself this question, "what better, Being held captive and wanting to leave captivity, or being out in the wild where you want to be..."
see but its a loose loose thing.... if she is in the captivity, then shes restricted to what she is born and wants to do...
but if shes out in the wild then she is out and about and is doing things like climbing and interacting with other monkeys she will have the sense of freedom...

SomeBlokeLol 6 months ago
@SomeBlokeLol We're not 'helping them with their evolution' as you put it. If you think this project with Koko is going to impact gorilla evolution then you need to go read a book or something.
I think you're being way too cynical about other animals behavior, not to mention placing humans on a pedestal. We're not that complacent ourselves.
CoffeeCaramela 6 months ago
@SomeBlokeLol Um... gorillas are not hunting, killing predators. They are fairly non-aggressive vegetarians.
GEKGanon 6 months ago
@SomeBlokeLol They are not predators. They are private animals that eat plants. The only hunting they get is eating ants.

@iamwatchingut, in the wild gorillas slap each other all the time to show affection, and they do it a lot harder than she did, stop accusing her of animal cruelty when you aren't the one working on low pay with no vacations to care for a gorilla.

@iamwatchingut Seriously, you obviously don't know anything about gorillas. That was not animal cruelty.

DarthTomale 8 months ago
My dogs play fight all the time, they bite and really look like they are trying to hurt each other. That doesn't necessarily mean they are fighting, the gorillas could just be simply playing.

you animal rights people are starting to fucking piss me off. a love tap on the side of the face is fucking NOTHING. in the wild they smack the shit out of one another and with those size arms im sure it would hurt ALOT more. stop your bitching. if she was burning koko with cigarettes or boiling water for fun then yeah you can complain. otherwise...STFU HIPPY!

:D burning with cigarettes .. :D oh god..
EdTheBadass 8 months ago
@NorthWeezy2010 Besides. Penny is treating Koko like she would treat a human child of her own. What is wrong with that? If anything, that shows she truly is seeing Koko not as a pet but as a sentient being, which she most certainly is. To call such an act inhumane would be self contradictory.
TheTrueNinja12 6 months ago 2

That's good!
mrbluenun 10 months ago
@mrbluenun agree 100% and i dont know if u noticed this so much, it seems like koko is trying to share her own heritage? ..own...games. ...and that director is a fucking moron..what a fucking moron...koko is happy as is...so however wild or anything she is...is completely ...ugh whats the word...meaningless... koko is totally an individual. and zoo.s are cruel, its like having a slave...they dont know what they are missing...so they think they are happy...koko is depressed when caged is shows

capablemachine 10 months ago
Choosing between the zoo or being Penny's guinea pig is like asking which shit smells worse. Both choices stink.
Penny supposedly keeps KoKo to prove gorillas can communicate so that humans will appreciate and want to save them. If you want humans to appreciate gorillas, show them the clip of the gorilla in the wild who sees his human handler for the first time in eight years and how the gorilla remembers and still loves him. It is very touching. Much more touching than this.

TOEVERYTIME 1 year ago
@TOEVERYTIME lol no, that would have only been incredibly interesting. This however was not their goal. They have however laid a lot of ground work for another team to do such research some day. This would be a difficult task though.. They need to establish dominance for two reasons, to keep the researcher safe, and to teach the gorilla things. To establish dominance they must force the gorillas to do everything their way.. I suppose the researchers could behave like gorillas though... lol.
5iveAnd2wo 1 year ago
woah she slapped koko in the face :/ what a bitch. also they should teach all gorillas to speak in sign so that they can evolve with a language we can understand. I think it would be so much beter if we understood at least one part of the animal kingdom, what they are trying to say. iv always wanted to know what some animals are feeling and this could show us that at least with gorillas :)
UndergroundBby 1 year ago
The zoo keeper interview seemed ancient to what would be said today, i think he said something along the lines of 'keeping them as wild as can be' then it showed an ape asleep on some concrete steps (how far from their natural emviroment was that) if that was their perception of 'keeping it wild' back in the late 70's then they was certainly out of touch.

@alan7997
P.S. If I just double posted I'm sorry, YouTube is giving me a little trouble at the moment.
kaioken2586 1 year ago
this woman is pretty annoying. She treats the gorilla like a little child and is totally overprotective. In this whole documentary KoKo never was left to play on her own...

@pixartist true--but these Americans r like this. they r too workoholic. gorilia should have working lessons and games-lessons. and just playings
martpast1 1 year ago
@martpast1 Well i don't think thats the point. It more related to ''human evolution theory'' as a scientific experiment to see how capable they could be when it comes to understanding & learning to humans.
alnakhli999 1 year ago
@alnakhli999 IT TOOK miliions of years for human to achieve the level and U say about fast short cut for ape. its not at all evolution theory. its Your pretending to speak science-like.
martpast1 1 year ago

Stupid lady

so my point is..... it sucks for the monkey

@nameless212
see i ask myself this question, "what better, Being held captive and wanting to leave captivity, or being out in the wild where you want to be..."
see but its a loose loose thing.... if she is in the captivity, then shes restricted to what she is born and wants to do...
but if shes out in the wild then she is out and about and is doing things like climbing and interacting with other monkeys she will have the sense of freedom...
most monkeys are raised by there mothers to
