Just picked up one of these, waiting for it to arrive. I am hoping to find a great setting on it, one that boosts my cleans, sweetens my overdriven tones (with an OCD)and adds maybe a tad of treble. A setting to leave on or turn off depending on my mood/taste at the time (some of the older stuff we play seems like it would occasionally lend itself to a less "hifi" sort of sound). Suggestions? Wanting it less as a boost and more as an all around sweetener....
The short review: buy this pedal! Long review: I use this pedal to tighten up/fatten up gain pedals. Tested with SSS & SSH strats, a twin, a TS9, Danelectro DriveV1, OCD, Rat, & a Son of Hyde. Adding the RC after any of the gain pedals really gives it something special. Its worth the $. For the commentor that said, "I'll just turn up my volume", you don't know what your missing.
Can I ask which mike you were using at this era of your recordings? It's a lot different than it is nowadays and I actually personally prefer these kinds of tones a lot. Thanks!
@Fishies125 - Vintage PGS Tonez courtesy of an SM57 and 240p! Tone Heaven.... : ) Obviously there was a lot different about the sound of these early videos. The mic and youtube certainly had a lot to do with it, but the main component was probably the 65Amps Soho that we used on all these early vids. It's a very different amp than the Fenders and Tone Kings we've been using since then. Thanks, and enjoy!
@ProGuitarShopDemos Oh wow, just a 57. I really respect what yall do to constantly improve your sound and methods, don't get me wrong, I just personally like these tones better =)
So you think it's mainly due to the way the Soho takes pedals? It seems to have a very smooth, pleasing reaction when confronted with transparent overdrives and boosts. And do you think the G&L is a big factor too?
Is it the best "clean boost/light overdrive" on the market ? I already have a Providence SOV 2 Overdrive pedalfor blues sounds..I want a clean boost with a little drive if necessary for solos...Thanks for all your work and demos....Best regards from France !!!!
@JRNicholson27794 i just bought the bb preamp. its an awesome pedal but yeah its a" clicky" switch like all true by pass pedals. i have a vox ice 9 and the switches on that are silent just like the swtich on my whammy. the switch on the bb is not bad though, you wont even notice the click with a band. although if you have reverb and delays turned on then you might notice it. but overall it doesnt bother me. its such an awesome versatile pedal. it can make any amp sound good.
I want to use this to boost my volume from my Super Plextortion (wampler). I use a Ts-9 for this and it changes the sound of my wampler... this will still retain all the sound from the wampler and give a completly transparent volume boost right?
How would this pedal sound on a solid state amp? Would it act more like a overdrive pedal or has the circuitry been designed well enough to still qualify as a clean boost? What do you know about the schematic/circuitry? What little I've found is that it is essentially a modified tubescreamer schematic...true or false?
hey,can i knw whats the diff between the xotic rc booster n the keeley katana.....i like john mayer's clean tone a lot...im using a fender 70's reissue strat, going tru a marshall class 5 amp...
Love all the demos - they're an invaluable resource when researching gear.
I'm looking for something to add the very slightest touch of overdrive to my clean sound. I'm using a my amp's distortion for my high-gain sound and a BB for my overdrive, but I'm looking for something to slightly overdrive my cleans...like when the BB is on and I have my guitar's volume rolled down low. Is the RC what I'm looking for or is there something else you'd recommend I check out...Thanks!
Nice! Walk Away. I play that in an Eagles tribute band, and I play the part of Joe Walsh. I really love that. We open our shows with it and I'm in the spotlight! :D
@ThisIsntLukeKim - It's very clean, so if your mixer has the headroom and you keep the volume at a reasonable level you should be distortion-free. Thanks!
@uffelykkekristensen Before overdrives, the boost has a more prominent effect on the gain. After the overdrives, the boost has a more prominent effect on volume. Also, the last OD/Dist/Boost pedal in the chain is the pedal that contributes the most character to your overall sound. Hope that helps.
would this pedal work good with "high gain"...metallica type crunch...and then to step out MORE...for "solo's"? i am running a VHT 120 with a LPstd...i love the gain from the head...but want to come out on the solo's.
hey andy its me again i was wonder also which one in your opinion would be better for solo boost, the bb or the rc, OR the tubescreamer, thanks andy for all the help
thanks andy, i cant choose between the tubescreamer or the bb preamp to buy, i am a metal, metallica player and when i solo the band is louder then i so i need a boost, i think i might go with the keely modified tubescreamer, but thanks andy
@lpdelux1 The Xotic RC Booster is awsome for any amp man!! I use it to make my Mesa Boogie Rectifier more lead friendly. The Pedal doesn't color the sound what so ever, it just rounds it up and give it that extra boost. The thing that makes it even more great is that it has a treble and bass knob too. Perfect pedal :)!
To clarify, everyone should know there are wall warts that put out 9v AC and some that put out 9v DC. You can't feed AC to a pedal that requires DC unless it has a rectifier! So if a pedal specifies dc make sure the adaptor you grab for it states that it put out DC!
Anyone know how this would sound with an electro-acoustic?
Im only really after a simple boost pedal for playing lead lines live on electro-acoustic, but would be up for this to use on electric also - but only if it will do the first job well.
Hey Pro guitar shop! I already have a barber Direct drive and now I'm looking for a low drive pedal. My amp doesn't have a dirt channel and I need a pedal to have some crunchy tones. Is the Rc booster a good deal or there are better options? Regards!
RC actually stands for "Really Clean". Andy says it at the beginning of the video. It used to say something about it on the prosound communications site, but I guess they switched it up.
I think if you want to have more volume and just boost your tone without a tone change. you can place it in the effects loop. It will rise your volume, and will not give your preamp more gain.

Hi Everyone, hope someone could help me out.
I am looking for a signal booster for my Acoustic guitar, it's the John Lennon
EJ-160E and it has been fitted with an electric single coil pick up.
This has a low output and when DI'd to the PA the gain has to be cranked up full.
Would the RC Booster pedal be any use? of not could anyone recommend a good pedal (Price within reason of course)
Thanks.

Hey, in the description you put "can be used with AC adaptor or 9v battery," but on the pedal it says 9vdc.
Topher7892 2 years ago
A common 9volt adaptor converts AC to DC, just like the battery is producing. Hope that helps,

RC booster is mostly just a clean boost, the AC Booster can be thought of as an overdrive from the tubescreamer family.

AC= Almost Clean
RC= Really Clean
BB= Blues Breaker
that should give you some idea of the tones from each of the pedals.

this woiuld be the first pedal in the chain?
augfive 2 years ago
Booster pedals should go last. If its first in the pedal chain, it would just add a bit of gain and very little boost which would just be a waste.
RosaRose168 2 years ago
It should not go after a delay pedal though. Just after any gain stage.
mattlittler89 2 years ago
