YOU WANT TO KNOW SOMETHING I LOVE THESE GUYS ALLWAYS DID AND ALLWAYS WILL BACK IN 1976 -80 WHEN I WAS STILL WILD AND CRAZY WE WOULD HAVE GRANDFUNK SERVIVAL NIGHT WE ALL BROUGHT RECORDS AND PLAYED THEM ALL NIGHT TILL DAWN AND DRANK ALL NIGHT AT MY PARENTS HOUSE WHEN THEY WENT ON VACATION THEIR NEGHBORS NEVER SAID A WORD. WHEN I BUMP INTO SOME OF THEM WHO WERE THERE THEY REMEMBER . NOW WE ARE OLD MEN NOW IN LATE 50S BUT I STILL HAVE THOSE RECORDS .AND THEIR SOLO STUFF TOO .
The IRS always practiced underhanded dirty filthy money grubbing tactics well beyond the letter of the law. "American band" is my favorite by this band. When i first heard it- i loved it. Unbelievable! I heard it in the car and I had to listen to it again so i watched this! Thank you very much!
Wow, this took me back to the day; I LOVED my GFR and had many of the albums...I never knew what these guys had been through...I am amazed with the wonderful attitudes of these guys - Kudos to you GFN-I loved you then and now I love you even more - Rock on American Band
I remember sitting on stage in a cincinnati show in the early 70 and and thinking how beautiful marks teeth were and his hair was long. I could't hear anything for three days they were so loud . but I never complained...lol I think black oak arkansas opened for them.
The IRS is illegal, but they do whatever they want. We need to stop them. They need to be dissolved! by "We the People." John Lennon was right, "Say you want a revolution!"
First album I ever bought, E Pluribus Funk, I was rockin to this stuff the day it came out, and I have played thier music in bands to this day. The album was round silver mettallic round like a coin,I will never forget it. This music reminds me of my childhood growing up. Good stuff.
I saw this band twice back in their heyday. I've seen lots of bands since then, but have never experienced the grace and power of a Grand Funk Railroad performance. It literally made my eyes well-up with tears to hear this story. As for Terry Knight...that guy disgusts me. An arrogant prick and a cancer. A hemhorroid. And a thief. The "justice" is that nowadays people say, "huh? Terry who???" But when you say Grand Funk, people still know and adore those guys!
as a now 50 year old lady, what can i say......these guys were the backdrop of my teen years in podunk, AL.............They are still comparable to and better than almost any rock band out there!!! Love u guys!!!! To The anthem of my life....thank you...
The best band ever!! Listening to this band brings back so many memories from my youth.. The songs are as fresh today as they were then, just timeless!!
I was 16 in '74. I was never a huge GFR fan then but I enjoyed this 5 part series & learned alot. It is however, totally ridiculous about the R&RHF scandal.
Random GFRR facts: The train bridge goes over Fenton Rd. not too far from the Twelveth St. intersection. My next-door neighbor is also related to Mark Farner. I also worked at John's Pizzaria in Fenton in the mid-nineties. Mark used to eat there on occasion.
They omitted the 1981 album Grand Funk Lives probably because Mel didn't play bass on it and Craig didn't play keys, but it's a good album nonetheless.
Terry Knight is a PIECE OF SHITTTTTTTTT!!!!!! Grand Funk is one of the, if not THE very best and most meaningful bands to have ever come into existance. They should, at this point... lay away their little petty differences and become an entity like never before!!!!!!!!! Long live THE REAL GFR FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Enjoyed the clips greatly. It really is a time machine for me, I was there, and recall fondly listening to them. I owned almost all their albums, and I know their music even till this day. I hate Micheal Moore, but he's right when he said "they were the peoples band". So true!
Why wouldn't Grand Fund Railroad have been good in 1998? The STONES are a decade older and had years of drug abuse behind them. These boys seemed to have lived a cleaner life, certainly with wonderful wives. I'd love to see them today!
I saw Grand Funk in 2007; they played on the Beach near Reedsport, Oregon. Sadly, Mark wasn't in the lineup, although the singer who replaced him sounded okay. So here I am, standing on the beach, my acoustic guitar in its case, at 10:00 at night, hearing "I'm Your Captain" and it sent chills down my spine and I had tears in my eyes. Later, I got Don Brewer to autograph my copy of "Grand Funk" (the red album), and I'll always chat memory.
Grand Funk Rail Road Survival was my very first album at the age of 7. It was given to me by one of my older sisters friends. I literally wore the groves out of it. It inspired me to play the guitar. I have a deep apreciation for GFR . The covers were beter then the originals.

Loved this whole series. This is probably the best rock band ever. No one else comes close. I never could understand why the Rolling Stones were considered such an enduring "rock" band. Rock is what Grand Funk does, not so the Stones. (Michael Moore gets on my nerves but I'll look past that for GFR)
Thanks for posting this, I was in the mood for some GFRR tonight and ran across this. Back in the early 1970's I beat up the kid down the street who said The Partridge Family was a better band then GFRR. I was right then and still right today.
@PackedFunk Thanks a million for posting this. GFR, Steppenwolf, and Jethro Tull were MY bands, and you know what? They all were stacked with plain old good dudes - guys you really like as people, not just as artists. None of those bands ever got the credit they deserved - and they were all coming from different musical directions. I went on to classical music, and now those bands of my youth live beside Beethoven and Bach and Chopin in my memory.
@sundevilkevin Im originally from Michigan and my friend brought this album over and being from Michigan we like HARD ASS ROCK anyways. I played the Red Album and got blown away by the guitar riffs and the deep mind blowing BASS. Then the DRUMS kicked ass too!! Im like DANG DUDE. I liked their MUSIC more than sex. Probably because I was still a virgin (lol). Never heard another rock band close to their talent and its been 40 odd years..I still play the "Caught In The Act" CD in the car
@sundevilkevin Partridge Family better than GFRR? Seriously? I mean, i never grew up on either of these bands (i was born in '78), but i have seen BOTH the GFRR and the PF BTMs, and i can tell u that GFRR would kick the Partridge Family's asses up and down the street! GFRR was hard rock, Partridge Family was bubblegum! And they're from my home state of MI and i'm happy they're from here! They're the only band to sell 10 CONSECUTIVE PLATINUM ALBUMS! Who else can top that?
I enjoyed this very much until Moore comes out. And then I think "Yuck." The only thing he said that I appreciated was at the very end about the graffiti.
Great story many things i didn't know. They are coming to Cleveland 3/27/10 as part of moondog coronation ball if you are in area and want to see them.
I was in Saginaw many years ago and attended their very first concert at the old autotorium (sp) in Saginaw and then went to an after party.. Those were the days. We use to run into all of them at Howard's Music.. Remember Mark? That's back when Meatloaf was with Popcorn Blizzard in Freeland. and Question Mark was hangin out at Howards Music.
@PackedFunk Hey Dude? You forgot to SAY THEY BLEW AWAY LED ZEPELLIN sharing the Stage with them........lol.........had an actual riot there..............
How many Terry Knight's are there out there? ALOT. as musicians we just want to play have fun and maybe make some money but MAGGOTS like Knight and the F***K scum of the earth IRS always want theyr'e share without ever working for it. It really sad but %99.9 of bands get royaly screwed by their "managers" and by the IRS. There should be a law against headhunters like Knight and the IRS who are vultures !
flint is little detroit. toast. moore is an idiot but grand funk are much respected by the fans and anyone who's ever played live in detroit knows they are the best to ever come out of that whole mess.
Just saw them last night....while it was great to hear the old songs....without Mark it was sort of sad....Loved watching this series...such great memories. I felt like I was 17 again! Don did play, sound & look fabulous...GFR still ROCKS.
100% agree with BIGSPA51. Mark will be here in South Florida next month. I won't go until it is all 3 of them together, I hope I get to see that soon.
I want to see MARK, DON AND MEL. I have no desire to see Grand Funk any other way. I understand Mark wanted a reunion and Don refused, am I wrong? I would pay just about anything to see the three of them, not as a side show at a horse race like they were in S. Florida without Mark. Breaks my heart!
Wow, this is the first time I've liked Michael Moore. Surprise but maybe it's a sign in this time of political polarization that maybe we all have more in common than we think...
i hope this documentary wake u p guys, u r at the mercy of u slavist goverment with his arm the irs, this show that doesnt matter who u r,U ALL R SLAVES EVEN GRAND FUNK WITH HIS REVOLUCIONARY MUSIC WENT DOWN. JUST WITH THE STRIKE OF A PEN TO MAKE IT LOOK LEGAL.legal acording with the laws of u slavist gang goverment,
so take a not ,like this american band, willie nelson and so many more u n u family will be punish dearly and will be kiked out u property by this gang(goverment) IF U DONT PAY TAXES
tell u what, this stuff made me fucking cry remembering all the tripped out times spent with a gfr soundtrack in the background. I saw them live in Tokyo in very early 70s, while vietnam was still going on. Unforgettable. I tell young people today about this great music n yes they are still a contemporary sound. and to top all of this off guess what i'm also an old black hippie, aaaah those really were the days.
This is a great episode of BTM, almost my favorite. Michael Moore, before he became MICHAEL MOORE was great. Perhaps it was the political nature of their music, but this was an absorbing episode. With their problems with contracts and the IRS, there is a real "heartland" flavor to this.
I love Grand Funk but watching this video made me realize that they made some very stupid decisions and mistakes. Half of it was their fault anyway. But if Terry wasn't such an asshole, the big lawsuit could have been avoided. But they did fuck up just three months before at the end of the contract, wow that's harsh. I don't understand the IRS tax problem, I guess that investment at the cold plant was a big mistake for them.
Maybe he did. Well then it was a good thing that he was murdered because he had a lot of bad karma for fucking a great band in the ass. RIP you greedy capitalist!! Because he was from Capital Records, lol! ironic
I really enjoyed GFR's documentary! I am an avid 60's-70's music fan and this post is a great service to not only GFR fans but all of Rock and Roll! To acknowledge God's role in their lives is not about "some old man in the sky". It is to be humble and let the music do the talking!
Brewer's wife says, "I don't know what they did to deserve what happened to them." The answer to this question isn't too difficult. They had the audacity to speak out, with a thunderous voice, against the "establishment". The "Man" is still vindictive.
Thanks for the post brings back lots of great memories from my younger days. Im going to call my best friend from those days and tell him about this post. I cant tell you how many hours and hours listening to GFR as a kid. Again a HUGE THANK YOU for the post.
They were BIG in Cuba...I mean BIG..in my teen years they were the biggest party band only follow by Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin...but GFR were at the absolute top...too bad they never got to see them play live in havana.
Too bad they think some old man in the sky had something to do only with thier story. These guys don't need some illusional all powerful being. And where is the story behind Good Singing Good Playing??!! A KILLER album! Terry Knight was a dickhead.
Mark, Don, and Mel truely are the best, not only their music, but as people. I hope that someday soon they could reunite, I know there are many of us that feel the same.
I wish i had the hours, hours& hours back that I spent listening to this great band back in 69,70,71,72,and seeing them in concert at the Omny in atlanta, but it was worth all the hours.GFR IS THE GREATEST AMERICAN BAND EVER, God bless you mark, mel,and don.
As a child i hoped some day when i grew up, I would some how meet then marry Mark. I'm now in my 40's and still waiting. I'll wait as long as it takes. Mark, if your reading this call me!
COME ON PEOPLE LETS GET GRAND FUNK RAILROAD INTO THE ROCK-N-ROLL HALL OF FAME---WE BABY BOOMERS GREW UP WITH THIS BAND I HAD CHANCE TO MEET MARK IN MISSOURI IN 2002 One of the hardest rocking bands of that time
I can't believe these guys aren't inducted into the Hall of Fame. I knew every lyric and chord on those early albums. My frist band played these tunes and people love it. I still have a GFR song book from years ago.
The New York Daily News' Nationwide Readers' Poll for 1971.
Tens of thousands of votes were cast from every state in the nation. When the final score was tallied, Grand Funk Railroad had garnered a whopping 75% of the total vote as "Best Rock Group In The U.S." Left to split up the remaining 25% were: 2.Creedence Clearwater, 3.Jackson Five, 4.Led Zeppelin, 5.Three Dog Night 6.The Who, 7.Sly, 8.Santana, 9.Chicago, and 10.Ten Years After!
GREAT JOB posting this here. I would have never have known GFR was NOT already inducted in the HOF. What a shame, but shame on who..? Any way I got to see my BEST HS pal, DENA, Mel's wife. bloody hell, that was awesome too! THANKS FOR THE 1-5 Videos. Yes, I will sign the petition .
UPDATE 2008: obviously there has been a falling out...when i saw them "GFR" a year or so ago..no Mark Farner....they sucked..seemed like the crowd didnt notice, but i sure did..
Man...I got hit with the same disapointment. Drove over 300 miles to boot! No mention whatsoever of "No Mark Farner" which really frosted my cookies. Did the Mark Farner 'wannabee' buzz the stage like a fucking airplane? I wanted to pelt him with my shoes! Thank God Ted Nugent played next. Ted ripped that place apart! In fact, he ripped us a new....well, you know what he did! NO SHIT!!!!
As an artist and creator that saw all levels of the playing field, Mark Farner's musical diversity is a matter of public record. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" as one of the top ten classic songs of all time. Way to go Mark!!! Rolling Stone is just now realizing what we Funk Fans have known for 38 years!!!
Yea. Screw Madonna she's not even rock n roll. If they don't induct Grand Funk immediately they no longer have any credibilty as a rock n roll "institution". They'll be about as worthy as (Hollywood)and that ain't sayin' much ...
Well all you Funk Fans, that is one million views of our Grand Funk Railroad videos. Thanks to everyone who has supported our efforts with the petition in the video's description. This is not only The People's Band, This is America's Band! Here's to the next one million views & God Bless Everyone!!! T.J.
I met Mark Farner in Springfield VA around 1991. After the show he waited in his bus to shake hands, sign autographs,or embrace anybody that stood in line to meet him. I got in approx. 3:00 AM. He didn't have to do that. It was a very special moment in my life. I graduated from high school in 1972. I wanted to be Mark Farner. So did everyone else jocks, freaks, and geeks. The Spinners and Gladys Knight are in the R&RHOF, "GIVE ME A F**KIN BREAK". They could still sell out Shea.
Well put ercasc! I've met Mark many times myself & he always has time for his fans. The fans have always come first. I don't think there is a band today that could sell-out Shea even once, much less twice in three days! I look at the way R&RHOF treats these guys as a slap in the face of millions of us Funk Fans. Therefore the petition in video's full description.
I met Mark in 1990 at a record collector's expo in Detroit.Mark was my idol in so many ways,I had to meet him.He went to the same high school I did,and I knew many of his family.
I was shaking when I met him,but he was so cool to me,he signed my entire GFR collection, and when I thanked him and had my picture taken w/him,he joked that he'd never forget my name. Two years later he played in Davison,Mi,and I went to see him, after the show I went to shake his hand, and he remembered me.
I know Michael Moore is from Flint, but why have that moron in this documentary? He's a lying shit hook.

klawver 2 years ago
wow, quite a video (pts 1-5). i've seen parts of The Who's "Amazing Journey", and their nightmares were minimal compared to what GFR went through.
it's ironic, really, that "The People's Band" have the same problems we do, and outrageous that they're not honored for doing all they did.
merry christmas, and please sign the petition

The most comercially successful band in the world from '69-'76 was indeed GFRxR.
First band to ean 10 consecutive platinum albums was GFRxR.
First band to have a "Live Album" to earn multi-platinum status was GFRxR.
The all time ticket sales record at Shea Stadium stood 38 years until it was torn down, again GFRxR.
I have a poster on my wall from 1970 saying 3 Gold Albums in less than 3 months-Is that any way to run a Railroad?
No band has ever been bigger than Grand Funk in their hey-day.

Breaks my heart!

tell u what, this stuff made me fucking cry remembering all the tripped out times spent with a gfr soundtrack in the background.

TripletWizard123 2 years ago
I thought Terry Knight Invested in the plant without their permission?

Brewer's wife says, "I don't know what they did to deserve what happened to them." The answer to this question isn't too difficult. They had the audacity to speak out, with a thunderous voice, against the "establishment". The "Man" is still vindictive.

Cool of them to leave 25% for other 9 bands!

They could still sell out Shea.
ercasc 4 years ago 3
