This really is one of the best ballads of the '80s. Not that it ever gets recognised that way, of course. Say the radio stations, music channels and record company execs: "Marillion, you say? Sorry, but unless it's 'Kayleigh', we don't want to know."

Clutching at straws was their last album, and many people will pick one of the previous three as their favourite... but this grew on me, and it was this song that made it for me with the melancholy. Just putting life off, and carrying on putting life off with more excuses... each day another raincheck so not to face up to life's reality... so sad...
