Can anybody tell me where I can get digital Versions of "Step it out Mary", "Sam Hall", "The early Morning Rain" and "Red haired Mary" by Danny Doyle?
They won't break me because the desire for freedom, and the freedom of the Irish people, is in my heart. The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show. It is then that we will see the rising of the moon. -BOBBY SANDS R.I.P
Ohh, I have, I own a lot of records and CD's by him and the Dubliners. I do Like Luke's version the best. However, I like the the old and soft sound of this version.
whilst there is no doubt that Lukes version is quite well done, due to the fact it leaves out the last (and what I beleive to be integral) verse I would not say its the 'best' version.
sir, in truth, he does have a fair voice and no question that he may love ireland, but if the latter is true why move to the u.s.a to have a few dollors. why not make a contribution to ireland like those boys of 1798 that he sings about here. or is doyle just another plastic paddy pandering to the yanks? i am trying to get constructive fed back here about doyle and why he fled ireland.
To labhras: Your comment is grossly unfair to Danny. He was most certainly not "washed up" in 88 or 89; in fact, his voice is just as sweet and lilting now as it was 40 years ago. True, he moved to Virginia & played American pubs (vs. Irish ones). So what? Danny Doyle is a kind, caring person and will forever be one of the greatest Irish balladiers that ever lived. And I'm proud to call him my friend.
The Celtic Music Association has featured Danny Doyle as a headliner three times since 2002. He's a good man and a great artist. Clark Williams, CMA, FSOSP
This is great - I'd never heard Danny's version of this song before, although I recognise his voice from others on tapes I heard years ago. It's great to have his music archived here - the more people who hear and keep enjoying his singing, the better for Irish culture.
i heard a washed-up doyle singing this in late december '88 or early '89 in washington d.c. sad that he ended up singing in dive bars in america where people singing irish ballads are a dime a dozen.

Surely! I'm not Irish and I trust you, but the first difference that I can feel is that the sound "ai" as in My, Rising, pikes is not frequently changed in "oi". I have heard an other version before and the accent was absolutely stronger.
