Also wanted to add, we produce alot of video for several outdoors type businesses and we use the Everio for ALL youtube quality vids. The Everio is actually a GREAT camera for alot of uses and there are a few tricks we have learned with this camera. We bought 7 of them right when they came out. Any quesitons about the Everio, please feel free to ask us anytime from our channel by clicking the username link creativepaint1 below this post.
Just download EMICSOFT VIDEO CONVERTER. You can take the MOD files off your Everio in fine or ultra fine mode and open them in emicsoft, set the output to WMV (windows media Video) name it, save it... The emicsoft converts a hundred times faster than the AVS video converter and this way you will NOT lose video quality near as bad.
Hi, i have tried converting my .mod files to avi files using AVS Video converter 6, but it seems to lower the playback quality a noticeable amount once it is converted. Does the method shown in this tutorial lower the quality aswell? Cheers, Matt.
@DoorMatt69 Any conversion of the video will result in a loss of quality. Depending on what your final output will be you shouldn't notice. This video is 3 years old now... I use a program called WINFF for windows. I might make a video as this is a better way to convert video files.
hey, i followed your instructions but when i load windows media player it says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file may be formatted with an unsupported codec"
@retrojunkies You'll need to have the right codec on your computer. Try downloading something like k-lite. This video is a little out of date now as bother YouTube and software has changed.
This is redicilous. The files from the vid i shot a 1 hour ago don't have anything behind it. no .MOD, .mpg etc etc. I dunno how to open it in Premiere now..
@Michaelmop Did you enable your computer to show file extensions? Also, Everios have two files per video, where only one of the two files is the actual video. Hope that helps.
I rename to mpeg because their have been reports of issues doing that. I used SDCopy for about a week, which does exactly what you are explaining, renaming the files, however, it causes Windows Explorer to crash, so I have to try and find a plugin for movie maker. The video that comes out of the camera is fine, I don't thing there is anything wrong with it
@aimonb8 I guess that's what you get with some cameras though. Unless you buy a camera they use for TV the data formats normally need to be uncompressed before you can edit them...
the mod files on my computer which i transferred from a jvc camcorder have recordings split up grr. so mod01 and mod02 could be the same recording but now need to be merged grr
@Hodenkat You are correct. This video was made some years ago but seems to still be proving useful to some members. It's all about the codex's on your computer!
This was a GREAT video; you should have a link for PayPal donations. Your advice worked perfectly. I was able to edit the file with InterVideo (Asus Motherboard software), export as a .wma and upload to Facebook in NO time. THANK YOU!!!
@philipnewmannz you have to go to Control Panel, then Folder Options, and scroll down until you see "Hide Known File Extensions" and uncheck it and press apply and OK.
Thanks this helped alot! Ive been using vegas and thats been fine but im trying to start using adobe again because thats what i used to edit my DV videos and i like it much better!

If you have a Mac there is another solution I have a JVC and this solved it easily. Get Roxio Toast 8 burning software, drag the videos to the VIDEO section and highlight them all. Once this is done export at bottom to .dv file and edit!
tried this but it doesn't work. Really angry JVC wasted mu money they are crooks IMHO. Only reason I don't smash this damn camera to bits is it has film of my kids on it. Now hard disc is full I need to keep this camera to see the films.
Possibly not...but I wrangled with this issue on and off for a while before I bought a Sanyo Xacti which was cheaper and does better video and stills in a 'low powered pc with early XP software' friendly format.
But wait...I suddenly remembered (DOH!) and downloaded VLC player. Renamed the files to .mpg and VLC player plays them perfectly....Excellent!
Sorry but I totally forgot about VLC before I did my ranting. Still peeved at JVC and Microsoft a wee bit though.
Windows doesn't really read .mpg files so it wouldn't read the size format. VLC reads the files as they are formatted aka the default 16:9 setting on the Jvc Camera.
what if u dont want to edit it, can u jsut change the extension to .AVi and just upload to youtube straight away, without having to go into teh Adobe software etc.? Plz help, i need to upload videos urgently...thanksyou

Great tutorial. Finally someone who confidently knows what they're talking about. Would it work if I just renamed my .MOD files to .MPG and edited it in Final Cut just as I would normally and then export it as an AVI? Or would I never get the original quality back that I lose when changing it to an .MPG?

I have to use .mod, since that is what jvc uses and its really stupid. But I have been playing with it and wmv and mp4 seem to work pretty good. WinFF seems to work fine, converts them perfectly for edit. thanks
i got a JVC too, and i downloaded cyberlink ultra as a trial, it was perfect. without doing anything, it just reads .mod files, i reallyyyyy want to get it, but its about 100-200 bucks and i have to buy online :( bit risky, but when i have the money im definately buying it !!
WinMPG video convert can sometimes be obtained free, but at any rate, costs a lot less than the adobe software, and is a very reliable converter of most kinds of movie files. You can convert mod files to avi and then edit them in Windows moviemaker.
I have an earlier model JVC Video Camera 20GB HD i converted it from an .MOD file to an AVI file. It did not help. Im using Power Director 8. It just freezes and closes down on me :-(

jvc .mod files scuks....i spent days with the rubbish....this vid didnt help....though adobe premiere elements {7} recogniced .mod adobe premiere cs4 didnt
Elements is designed for people with consumer cameras. Premiere is designed for people who have professional cameras. You'll find most HD pro cameras will slide right into premiere seamlessly.
i tried to rename the file by adding .mpg after the name, but it didnt change the format, only the name. can someone tell me how to change the format? this is killing me!
i gotta problem i changed the .mod into a .mpg but when i imported it into premiere pro 3 it has no sound ... but when i play the same file in wmp 11 and wmp classic the sound is there .. how do i get the sound to play in premiere pro 3?? and no sound is coming up on the time line
Sorry, ment to reply this to it accidentaly posted it above it lol
right click the videoclip or soundclip (if there is a blank sound clip then right click that) and select Disable Resample, it might take a while to find but im not firmiliar with premiere pro 3 only SV, but they should have the same basic switches
i am having this problem with the GZ-MG130U, but when you were changeing the .mod to .mpg, how your computer displayed a picture of the video, my comp doesnt do that
I have a GZ-MS100 and i feel like smashing it with a sledgehammer. The one touch quick upload to YouTube was the sole reason why I bought this, since I make alot of videos and upload onto YouTube however it doesn't work all the time.
Anything with digital media will require your computer to be able to edit the codex the video has. It took me about 3-4 weeks to work out the best way to edit the files i have on my camera. The software that comes with the camera isn't exactly helpful.
It always say 'server busy' and sometimes the CyberLink program doesn't pop up and i have to uninstall and reinstall the program to upload the videos, and then it fails to upload again because 'server is busy' i feel so deceived. This is by the far the most fucked up gadget i've owned so far. I'm trading it off for something better
the software package that comes with the everio is atrocious the Cyberlink powerDVD bundle its just so annoying and horrible to use and crashes all the time
Thank you so much, for this, you saved me heaps of time with this, I just ordered a JVC GZ-MG430B. I heard the file format would a be a MOD files so I was getting worried as I never even heard of that format before and I didn't know you could convert it. I wanted to ask you, instead of changing it to mpeg, can you change it to wmv. Also, is it worth installing the software the camcorder comes with. My video editiong software I use is CyberLink PowerDirector. 5/5, adding this favs.
Copying the files first doesn't work, the file extension change and running it through an editor even premiere doesn't maintain the audio layer either. I've tried magix vegas and wmm. no luck.
thankls man this helped me i spent a day trying to figue out how to do it and i lost alot of my clips but then my friend linked me this video and it worked thanks man (Y)
I was thinking about buying this camcorder and I was concerned about the compatability so thanks for the video, it has really set my mind at ease! Just one other question though, if you convert the file to .AVI using a software program (I have used Prism in the past) and then import the file in to Windows Movie Maker, is there any lose in quality of picture or sound?:)
Good suggestion how ever if your on dial up uploading the downloading files could be a problem you are better to download WINFF its free and converts just about everything ... other than something to DVAVI for some reason!
for me the videos show up as .MOI which is a sound file and i need help making it into an avi or something and i want to get it on wmm. can u help. i use vista and i have the same camera
I have been using mpeg streamclip, which is a free download. I play the .mod file in it, and then I export it as an avi. I have a PC with XP on it. If you view my videos, you will see what they look like. I use the poorest resolution on my camera to be able to fit more.
My only problem is that one needs to have an old version of quicktime alternative to make it work, and that doesn't play some of the newer quicktime videos I find online. I don't really miss that too much.
Well I've been using the 30 day trial version of the newest version of Premiere Elements (4.0) and the green screen is still showing up. Could it be it's just the trial version and not the full thing?
Does it show up once the video is rendered? I tend to just buy non trial copies from the store ... Visit the adobe website and see what functions have been enabled or diabled.
I actually found a different way to convert to .avi without any problems. I'm using PowerDirector that actually came with the camcorder. But thanks for your help anyway!
Thanks for the video, it really helped. But I do have a couple things.
First, which version of Adobe Premiere Elements are you using in this video?
Second; whenever I convert the video to .avi and then put it in Windows Movie Maker to edit, the screen goes green for a split-second. How can I stop this green screen from showing up?
V1.0 It is a realy old copy I got in 2000 ... your green problem is a bug within windows movie maker. You would be better off getting a copy of Premiere Elements from your local store and using that. It will set you back about 90NZD.

philipnewmannz 3 years ago
Sorry, ment to reply this to it accidentaly posted it above it lol
right click the videoclip or soundclip (if there is a blank sound clip then right click that) and select Disable Resample, it might take a while to find but im not firmiliar with premiere pro 3 only SV, but they should have the same basic switches

i am having this problem with the GZ-MG130U, but when you were changeing the .mod to .mpg, how your computer displayed a picture of the video, my comp doesnt do that
Mattohn 3 years ago
Because you can set windows media player to read the .Mod files as .Mpg files using windows.
philipnewmannz 3 years ago
I have a GZ-MS100 and i feel like smashing it with a sledgehammer. The one touch quick upload to YouTube was the sole reason why I bought this, since I make alot of videos and upload onto YouTube however it doesn't work all the time.
baleheads 3 years ago
Anything with digital media will require your computer to be able to edit the codex the video has. It took me about 3-4 weeks to work out the best way to edit the files i have on my camera. The software that comes with the camera isn't exactly helpful.
philipnewmannz 3 years ago
That one touch upload to youtube is a fucking crock of shit. Just some false ad to entice gullible people.
baleheads 3 years ago
Yip! One touch upload = poop!
philipnewmannz 3 years ago
It always say 'server busy' and sometimes the CyberLink program doesn't pop up and i have to uninstall and reinstall the program to upload the videos, and then it fails to upload again because 'server is busy' i feel so deceived. This is by the far the most fucked up gadget i've owned so far. I'm trading it off for something better

Do you use the Everio for all of your videos?

The JVC Enverio 330 is a *.mod file. Is this compatible with the Pennacle video software suite? Which program does the conversion from mod to avi?
ensley55 3 years ago
I'm not sure ... I would assume you would have to change them to at least a .mpg to be able to edit them.

I have a GZ-MS100 and i cant even transfer the files over to my computer.

doesn't work sorry
MicahNBrooks 3 years ago
You have to copy files first or it wont work..
ScienceNoobs 3 years ago
Thank you so much, for this, you saved me heaps of time with this, I just ordered a JVC GZ-MG430B. I heard the file format would a be a MOD files so I was getting worried as I never even heard of that format before and I didn't know you could convert it. I wanted to ask you, instead of changing it to mpeg, can you change it to wmv. Also, is it worth installing the software the camcorder comes with. My video editiong software I use is CyberLink PowerDirector. 5/5, adding this favs.

all i get is audio when i convert the files ?
Jeffhardybiggestfan 3 years ago
me tooo you found the soloution??#
bballerbrown 3 years ago
Copying the files first doesn't work, the file extension change and running it through an editor even premiere doesn't maintain the audio layer either. I've tried magix vegas and wmm. no luck.

how do you do this with windoes movie maker, please help
doody12 3 years ago
With a mpeg file. Instead of changing it to mpg edit it to a mpeg. Or an wmv.

Appreciate the help & a big fan of the accent. Thanks!

Good suggestion how ever if your on dial up uploading the downloading files could be a problem you are better to download WINFF its free and converts just about everything ... other than something to DVAVI for some reason!

cooleycat2 3 years ago
For windows movie maker you will need to convert your MPG file to a WMV or AVI container and codex.
philipnewmannz 3 years ago
Try using Zamzar for free media file conversion. The site works great!

philipnewmannz 3 years ago
for me the videos show up as .MOI which is a sound file and i need help making it into an avi or something and i want to get it on wmm. can u help. i use vista and i have the same camera
dyingtoliveRWTF 3 years ago
I have been using mpeg streamclip, which is a free download. I play the .mod file in it, and then I export it as an avi. I have a PC with XP on it. If you view my videos, you will see what they look like. I use the poorest resolution on my camera to be able to fit more.
My only problem is that one needs to have an old version of quicktime alternative to make it work, and that doesn't play some of the newer quicktime videos I find online. I don't really miss that too much.
erra404 3 years ago
i just realised you need to show file extentions ROFL im stupid and crap at spelling :)

Well I've been using the 30 day trial version of the newest version of Premiere Elements (4.0) and the green screen is still showing up. Could it be it's just the trial version and not the full thing?
Spyne 3 years ago
Does it show up once the video is rendered? I tend to just buy non trial copies from the store ... Visit the adobe website and see what functions have been enabled or diabled.
philipnewmannz 3 years ago
When it's fully rendered into an .avi format, yes, it still shows this green screen. I'm honestly not sure what to do.
Spyne 3 years ago
to be honest I haven't come across this problem before ... I converted to a mac :_)
philipnewmannz 3 years ago
I actually found a different way to convert to .avi without any problems. I'm using PowerDirector that actually came with the camcorder. But thanks for your help anyway!
Spyne 3 years ago
Sweet as glad you found a solution that works for you.
philipnewmannz 3 years ago
Thanks for the video, it really helped. But I do have a couple things.
First, which version of Adobe Premiere Elements are you using in this video?
Second; whenever I convert the video to .avi and then put it in Windows Movie Maker to edit, the screen goes green for a split-second. How can I stop this green screen from showing up?
Spyne 3 years ago
V1.0 It is a realy old copy I got in 2000 ... your green problem is a bug within windows movie maker. You would be better off getting a copy of Premiere Elements from your local store and using that. It will set you back about 90NZD.
philipnewmannz 3 years ago
Try 190 NZD for PE4

philipnewmannz 3 years ago
Thanks for the tip, I will try to use it. ^_^
Smuter01 3 years ago
Umm, buy a mac :P
Most HDD video cameras give you some silly format and don't use standard video containers.

thanks worked like a charm
