Do you guys advise to automate gain of vocal to get a more consistent level prior to putting it through a compressor? (I believe Avid are thinking about introducing a region-based volume control which is pre-fader)
@videoeditors it depends! If you have a VERY loud part compared to the average level of the performance... yes it s better. Otherwise you will hear the compressor work/freak out. If not... it s a trade off. Do you want to work fast and let the compressor ride the gain for you or do you have the time to automate everything? Do you like the color and the tone of your compressor? it really is up to you. You should watch the compression video where Fab compares both techniques.
@videoeditors That plugin rocks. Paul Frindle is a genius. I have not tried it for de-essing. I'm sure it should provide some good results if you map a mellow tone onto a harsh ssss. Worth a try. I will when I can. Fab
@videoeditors I am not really familiar with this tool. It looks different from other compressors though. The fact that you have to capture a curve by clicking on a button at the appropriate timing in order to determine what part of the signal will be above or below the threshold is new... I ve never tried. I do not know if it is accurate.
If it does regular multiband compression it must be just as good as the other ones.
@lilmrdr most of the time yes. But sometimes you can still get a decent recording whilst recording super close if you play with the angle of the mic. We re about the finalize another video about this technique. I ll let you know when it s out.
I've always read on mixing articles about the DBX 902, never seen or heard one; just like your Tape video, thanks for allowing us to see and hear what these old-skool analog components sound like.
@wizprodux My pleasure! If you really want to hear a difference, you should really check it out on the puremix website though. YT sometimes compresses audio a bit to hard for our sensitive sound engineer ears.
WOW! that's all i have to say.. i dont even need this info, and still i enjoyed watching this..
