I went once and i would never go again - even for free - I'd pay to stay home!

Bali is NOT travel - it's for crass KATH AND KIM BOGAN TYPES WHO HAVE NO IDEA WHAT REAL TRAVEL IS BECAUSE THEY'VE NEVER DONE IT.

  • Bless this beautiful doctor, her son, and their whole team! If any one person can affect a positive change in the life of just one other human being, then we are good citizens of the world. This woman is affecting positive change in hundreds of people! What a dedicated soul she is!

  • is it possible the bali goverment make a big building and put them in there instead hand cup them or treated them like bandit. Pls change this thing. It's really bad story Kamu sebagai pemerintahan kok bicaranya begitu.. mana rasa social kamu terhadap masyarakat orang yang di mental hospital pake baju ijo kok bicaranya gitu seperti pemerintah dont care... aku jadi terharu banget nih sama story. Terimakasih ibu suryani.. yach tuhan kamu baik banget..

  • It is shocking, but things like this were a norm in rural areas in Japan too at least up until 1960s.

  • U guys who watch this video should re-think about the title it was given:

"BALI'S SHAME" but the content is about the struggle of dr. Suryani and her son searching for mentally ill people who were chained up in Bali Island and giving them treatment. So I think it's not Bali's Shame, but Bali's Proud. I'm proud for Mrs. Suryani and her son, as they are balinese, and they care of ill people so well. Crazy people everywhere on earth, but dr. Suryani is a rare person. I'm Proud!

  • Why should be Bali`s shame-Indonesia! I think every where in the world the same situation is happening, but the only thing i can say is peoples can give any comment just to the thing what thwy like to comment others nothing is differents.

  • I pray Bali under God protection and will be funish the person who make and had made Bali Bad.

  • another propaganda by journey man .... aussie shit

  • dr suriyani did a great works

  • god bless and we help people like suryani...

  • this video addresses the problem and also introduced the solution. i think it's well balanced. and i'm so glad there are people like Prof. Suryani and team who work hard to improve others' lives.

  • Bali will never be the same. Terror killed the place. Muslims killed a great society

  • @stevenapoleon

    fuck u indon ni sialan.....

  • @erlkid f*ck your own nation U c*cks*cker!

  • @erlkid fuck off too..

  • really nice mom and son...

  • I think it really dangerous and short-sighted to judge the situation from Western eyes. What appears barbaric to us is quite normal to them. They, by the way, find many of our ways, such as how we treat the elderly in the West, equally barbaric and heartless. I suggest those who are offended by this film go to Bali and walk a mile in their shoes before judging.

  • This isnt disturbing at all, the villages take care of their idiots; by any means necessary. If you ever get a chance to spend any real time in Bali, you'd discover there's a deep believe in 'Black magic', extreme sexuality (even beastiality), animal sacrifice, and rampant, vicious gigalo's who sleep with old white women for money. Those things are far more disturbing .

  • @Eidelmania

I never find such thing, but it most worst to live in either macca or jerusalam, where I find enslaved woman .Who r sold in good price.Black magic is bad but not bad as slavery which exist in Arabia and hatred towards other.

  • Come to Bali, speak to the goverment and the mental hospital, then you will know what is going on.. the fact is this is just some kind of 'fund struggle' ..then you can judge yourself!

  • First I resent your headline. It's bit FOX newsy

It is a cheap and nasty shot to get a lot of views.

Second I do appreciate that you bring awareness to this issue.

  • medication is very expensive for the mentally ill in Indonesia so I assume the family's have no other choice as they can't afford the ongoing medication costs. Very sad..

  • he, journeyman be careful using your word "shame"; that is not a shame dirty secret. This is not a secret, is normal in all developing countries around the world, as you know. Bali just need better knowledge/solution way or system, as they are trying to do, and funding, as we understand in poorer countries. We all have to understand, that cruelty on behalf of everyone safety, includes the fictim themself.

  • This is not a shame on Bali but on the Indonesian mental health department.

You will find people like you see here all over indonesia and far to few people like professor Suryani, who in my mind is an angel

  • @sulivel you are right-we point the finger-we see the problems-its time to help-but also its more important to help the poor people around Bali-just 5% of the Balines people get a better situation from tourist-all other just work cheap.

  • in indonesia, like this is normal. in indonesian vilages or kampung sometimes have crazy or people that may hurt other people because of their errorism in their brain. they are chained or tied so they will not disturb or make craziness in the vilage

  • In Bali at times the police shoot all stray dogs which may potentially bite you (they do not bother to check which have rabies and which do not). But it is the families who take personal responsibility for other family members who may potentially rape or kill you. Although the thinking here is that physical and mental problems are spiritual in origin all of the offerings to spirits only keep you in their game. To be dedicated to them makes a person susceptable to them.

  • That you western world people can live your dream without that somebody disturb your beauty paradise in that world-that you relax have beauty view and great time, so the people you dont wanna see in front of your hotel and villa they imprision - just for you.

  • @YehudaRabuni they are chained for the safety of all people around them. They have a mental illness, they are not being imprisoned for another reason. How about lets do something to help them, pointing fingers will just waste more time and keep them there longer.

  • probably better they keep them chained up because they look like murderers and could turn at any moment. its just not worth the risk

  • Actually the rice situation and the British come to mind also. I love Bali and i really feel for the people and i hope and pray that they stay safe from their, 'benevolent' masters in Jakarta and become organic producers and can get whatever other parasitical countries sucking them dry off their backs...don't worry some very global shit is about to hit the fan so hold tight Bali. Love to you.

  • @nephilangel so what u mean is that bali needs to be independent right?

do u think that bali can survive with tourism only. All big businesses are centered in Jakarta...and not only Bali, indonesia has other many tourist attractions like Lombok, Menado, padang, NTT, KOmodo Island, etc..Bali is just one of Indonesian tourist attractions. I think australia has become too involved with Indonesian politics, such as Timor Leste and West Papua.

  • @jacketkulit I didn't say that, i stated what IS, i have no idea what the solution is but Bali has more than just tourism to offer. Independence from Indonesia? .. i hate to think what would happen if they tried. .What was done in EAST TIMOR was an atrocity, don't even get me started. We lost Australian journalists to Indonesian brutality and government corruption.

I can only expect bias from you and this 'debate' is not worth the investment of our time. Politics=distraction.

    Wake up.

  • @nephilangel i just hope that if u love Bali that much..u could love Indonesia also. Bali and Indonesia can't be separated. We share cultures, customs, religions, and traditions. We are brothers. i know that Indonesia has many problems. But, I'm sad if Bali could be in the same situations like Timor Leste. Indonesia has more than just Bali. You can travel throughout Indonesia, and you will come into conclusion that we have more to offer to the world than just Bali.

  • @jacketkulit I understand brother, forgive my ignorance, Bali is a special place to many of us, the mixture of Indonesian culture and Hindu tradition is a very beautiful thing, i have found a contrast with cultures that are largely Islamic, a harshness that does not mirror the gentleness and helpfulness of the Balinese people. My own degenerate culture is put to shame by them.

I don't doubt that all of Indonesia is largely beautiful, i just hope that you all can value it over some fake economy.

  • they should have this kind of program throughout Indonesia...

  • sometimes journeymanpictures made bad/negative comments to Indonesia. ;(

  • Thank you so much for publishing this only through awareness can change be achieved.

Do you by chance know where you can contribute with donations to help them in their work or who to contact (I live in Germany)? I would like to support them, but do not know how.

  • Hi......People no matter what you say bad about bali, balinese people still have better life than people in another country, they have own culture, own house, own land, how about you people in your country ? you have your own house, land, car still owed by the bank and a lot of homeless people run around in the street, no house, no shower, no food.....more disgusting and more poor than this movie..dont ever say bad about another country if you not get the point......

  • NEWSFLASH.....the 90's was not "thirty years ago"

  • I just know about this today. thanks for uploading this video.

  • Jakarta milks Bali for all its worth. in fact the only thing protecting these amazing ppl from the jealous aggression of Islamic Indonesia are the tourist dollars it generates.

Bali is a poor country and corruption is as rotten there as anywhere on this demon haunted planet.

  • @nephilangel bali aint a country.. but i agree that jakarta milks bali.. n other provinces..

  • @nephilangel jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia...then it's is just normal that it gains money from all other provinces such as Bali, because the center of Indonesian goverment lays on Jakarta. Then, Jakarta will then distribute the money to all other provinces for useful things..It is just the same like U.S., all other states give money from taxes, etc to Washington D.C. The major problems that Indonesia has are terrorists, corruptions, and poverty. Bali bombings really destroy Bali.

  • @jacketkulit having recently visited Bali and spoken to residents of the ISLAND, it seems to me the JAKARTA takes a bit more than what is reasonable. Perhaps you can tell me WHY the Balinese are so poor?

'Terrorism' is a construct, we have good evidential reason to believe that the Bombings at Kuta were not as they have been made to seem. That horrible event was the work of elitist agendas, not vengeful extremists. Your world view is a perversion of truth due to media and government propaganda.

  • @nephilangel you need to know that not only balinese people are poor...almost every islands and states in Indonesia have many poor people in it. you should visit jakarta sometimes, and you will see many beggars and very poor people are living there. I know that corruption causes the people to get so poor. Until now, we do not know who is really behind the kuta bombing.. whether it is muslim extemist or etc...just to let you know some of the terrorist masterminds were malaysians...

  • @nephilangel and i dont really get your point about elitist agendas.

  • Romantic Brothers - FLOWERS - ! Hilarious real situation track for dance! Reality about politics, economy & war! Amazon smash and i-pod killer hot shot! Listen! Real Party in World!:)

  • i am ashamed to realize that i know so little about my own country. we all have so much and there's so many ways we could help support them.

    k, now i feel emo :(

  • ok so why do you say that do you have understanding of this stuff you seem smart about other cultures do you have coment to make on this or just throwing out things I am from Bali and I know this stuff is true if you were able to buy a plane ticket i will pick you up at airport and we can both check it out maybe BS but i doubt it put your money where your mouth is bego

  • this is the most ridiculous thing ever!

  • hi....watch out, what you saying, bitch.......i prayer for you, i hope the next life you end up more worse than this people,.....

  • they gotta keep all the crazies away. its necessary so when all the rich white people vacation, they dont see any negatives. bali is like 90% tourism. look at the beginning, @0:08, all fat european

  • @Infectiousthought

hahahahaha...you're funny and correct. You should check out the fact that that most of the rice that they grow does not belong to them...slavery

  • Shocking. This is disgusting, and these suffering people should be helped ASAP.

  • @RoseBurgundy YOU ARE RIGHT I FEEL SORRY FOR THESE PEOPLE!! it doesnt matter if theyre kinda crazy thats why you gotta try to help them to have a better life.

  • @RoseBurgundy if every aussie who visite donat $50 we could help them all. there would be milllions of dollars raised.

  • what an eye opener.. thank you so much for uploading this video. I do wonder if amnesty are aware and helping out on this issue

  • what did you expect from a country run by muslims that believe when you die you get to have sex with 72 virgins .. 2000 years behind the rest of the world .

  • @ratrodralphy bali isn't muslim!!!

  • the middle easten muslims on youtube say your not a true muslims .. they say your from bad thinking .. i think you should go to war with them in the name of allah

  • pasung

  • really? so foreign companies, who dont care about the natural people or what happens to their environment, owning all the resources and equity is BETTER for the people? wow i didnt know that.

  • America was the main sponsor of the Suharto Dictatorship in Indonesia. It supported an anti-democratic madman running Indonesia for his personal profit and scooping off hundreds of billions while the people starved. Henry Kissinger approved all this.

You need to learn your own history, you ignorant fuck.

  • It is shameful that many of us Americans dont know that our own country sponsored ruthless dictatorships around the world.

  • hey america dont go after the drug cartel leaders importing drugs into its borderdss, the agents are on the payroll of the bosses but they imprison the petty low level minority street dealers

  • thats cuz they gotta keep the prisons full. no drugs=no 80%of convicts in prison on drug related charges. MONEY ka ching, ka ching

  • how does america make this poor????

    tell us how??

america is the police of the world

think about how much worse the world would be without america

  • lol, can anyone say :"brainwashed"? do yourself a favor and look up PBFORTUNE and PBHISTORY, then look up fordwerke, then look up Ho chi minh, THEN look up the history of hawaii, Then look up argentinas "dirty war", and then look up the iran-contras, chile pre-american overthrow. then you may speak....kid

  • Would you mind clarifying the comment you made:

"THEN look up the history of Hawaii".

just what do you mean by that statement?

  • we(they, america) overthrew the government(kingdom) in 1893

  • That's right!,

good to know someone knows their history.

    cheers.

  • Comment removed

  • yeah, that conveys what....you?

  • yes stupid american government for supporting the dictatorship that was in place, and allowing american companies to exploit the resources and people

  • it's such a difficult dicizh I mean do you let mental cases run around if they cannot take medicine or do you chain them up it's quite difficult to make it right.

  • In America we let them run free to kill people.

  • ya and ur next! hahahahah

    fuck face!

  • america is the reason these places are this poor, and underdeveloped.

  • Please care to explain why. Don't make deadbeat assumptions without an explanation.

  • Procter & Gamble, Avon, Levi Strauss , GM, ya deadbeat lol.dont you love sweatshops? america does anyways. BIG profit!!! there are some american mining companies that own big chunks of indonesia too, mine all the resources and give the country the left overs.

  • i totally agree with tying these people up,you cant have mental cases running roung scaring people.

  • Gusti's family doesn;t seem to take this very seriously.

  • Kill the pervert and be done with it.

  • it is not common to find such issues in developing societies

  • lol. developing? look at america. 3,000,000 in prison right now, and growing everyday.

  • But don't you think tht law breakers like the elderly man who was chained upsince the nineties, deserves it almost if he's constantly re offending and attcking women, and also what would be best? Him in a prison where he will be abused and alone or being put in a stock out side to breathe and live without being abused, but when it comes to those with mental health issues it is a serious problem,

  • death would be more humane

  • yeah in some cases that is true.

  • poor guy, i dont think he deserves that, he has mental problems =/

  • I agree. this is indonesia's shame. Indonesian are having this tendency to have a mentality where anything lies on god (whatever happens, God is the one who makes it that way and that is the situation that they have to accept)- in javanese word "nrimo". including the one who study abroad and don't wanna go home to help building their country because of "nrimo" and their miss-carriage belief in their own country.

  • Yet another great video JMP. Keep it up your stuff is great to watch.

  • suryani-institute . com

  • where can I donate?

  • it's not a Bali's shame!! it's Indonesia's shame ...

if u shocked when u see this in Bali...

then go to another city in Indonesia, and u'll always find another man or woman in this kind of condition...

and sometimes..some of the women are been abused or sexually harassed...till pregnant 3 times!!! by her own step father...

  • you can find this in all under develop nations even here in the americas in my country haiti .there just isnt much money to help people so the family does what they think best for them cause other solution would be kill these people because of the risk of them hurting someone else but they dont

  • well there are no psychiatric yard, what do you want them to do.physical illnesses are the priority in this case.I have a cousin who has the "cri du chat" syndrome basically severe autism. he is 6f4 and very strong .last time he snapped we had to run out of the house,it got out of hand he trashed everything, he managed to destroy the fridge in and out.there is no way we would let children around him because he just isn't receptive to emotions he would harm them them even if doesn't want to.

  • i see the logic that's what i was saying this isnt unique to indonesia it happens everywhere i was just responding to an earlier comment

  • dont act like u know everythings..!!

    ass..

  • well, i know coz i lived there!!!! and if u are indonesian dont act like u dont notice that!!!! fucking ashole!!!!

  • illness is somethings u cant prevent..

y dont u help if u stay there rather than spread the weakness..

i know a lot sexual abused in Indonesia but all of it happened over the world..

    u sucker..

    TONG KOSONG NYARING BUNYINYA..

  • so u choose to act strong outside and rotten inside?? is that what u say??

we can grow strong coz we admit our weaknesses, discuss it and find the best solution for it... not hiding it as if nothing happened...and as if sexual abused is a common thing all over the world????? ( sempit sekali pemikiran dirimu!!!)

no!!! we need to find the best way to solve this...by discussing it!!! not hiding it!!

    BAGAI KATAK DI DALAM TEMPURUNG

  • wat u try to put doesnt look like a solution, but talk cock..(bacot)

u can read again my previous comment it's say "y dont u HELP rather than spread it out..!!"(bantu bukan bacot dan coba menyembunyikan)

the meaning of this video actually is to get solution not to get insulted..

"sexual abused happened all over the world" its correct rite? (koq sempit, lucu bgt! loe dari nama loe sih g liat loe cwe, kali aja raped by step father before)

    AIR BERIAK TANDA TAK DALAM..

  • Pills help, its just difficult to figure out which ones work for who, but definitely psychiatry and medical therapy are needed as well at the same time to bring an overall effect on the patient.

  • i believe the love of Dr Suryani, and the responsibility of helping works, not the pills itself.

  • wisdom and compassion that is all that is needed. I wonder do mental institutions do that ?

  • no mention of which drugs are used

  • God help Dr Suryani and her team!!!

  • so sad. Suriyang is a great women. this is a very informative video

  • Good Job ,,,God will help them ,.,,

  • good find journeyman

  • Expensive? Indonesia is rich except that all the money are gone to only to those very few people. I have seen many Indonesians overseas spending money like it grows on trees. Bribery in their country is another huge problem

  • i think the problem is in the parents education.

  • Whenever I travel, I do everything possible to get off the beaten path. Therein I have found some of the saddest scenes (a man dying from hunger while his starving family cries around him), but also some of the most profound scenes (a woman giving birth in her hut while all the women of the village came together to help her).

My dream in life is to become a documentary filmmaker. I have been blessed with so much, I feel it is my duty to bring less fortunate voices to a greater audience.

  • If he was in america and he went around grabbing people he would be considered a sexual predator... theres rarely any help for that...

  • thats really sad. thank you for bringing light to this topic. again journeyman pictures has very good foreign reports.

i noticed the bali people smile a lot. even when talking about serious issues.

  • DeimosSaturn--stupid troll -- look she is not a cult u door nob ,she is a doctor so ur line of thinking means that for every doctor ,WTF is wrong with u ,i bet if u were locked up and only one doctor was visiting then u would like for her or him to go away and never come back ,should she wear a white coat and carry a clip board too make u happy ,do me a fav and put extra fluoride toothpaste on your tooth brush aright

  • That psychiatrist and her sing alongs with group meditation looks like it can easily become a personality cult especially if the psychiatrist dies and someone follows her example without all the truly therapeutic effects.

  • cool

  • FUCK THEM!AAllllll

  • i would love to knock my sister out,she told me to leave on xmas, because i bought hot dogs and frozen vegatables and not steak.. ;~^ I would chain up 99.9 of regular people,it would be neat!

  • Many mentally ill people even in The U.S and Canada fall through the legal' cracks,Some as in one case I know A young man was nearly beaten to death,he was severely brain damaged but declared 'not sick enough' to qualify to be cared for so he works at what ever place will hire 'challenged people'.He looks 60 and is in his mid 30's.His grandmother is 88 yrs old and cares for him often and his mother who has health issues she is 60.

  • Money or the lack thereof always seems to be and sadly likely always will be the heart of reliable quality care for all.If a Country's Government has no or little funds to establish quality care or cares not to deal with this one of many issues, this will continue.

  • Gusti (the guy at 15 min) reminds me of Johnny Depp. o.O

  • and to think that the cult of scientology is against the mental health field

  • A - Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in World.

B - "but the Health Minister is reluctant to help"

conclusion - ISLAM IS FAKE / Hypocrite religion!

  • Hmm, sure, blame it on TEH ISLAM.

  • If someone is 8 yrs old and his sense of logic is still as simple as yours, he definitely needs help.

What has religion got to do with this? The only reference to religion in the whole 19 minute doc was Hindu hymns and temples.

  • first of all... Sorry if my grammatical error irritated you!

I guess You who on other corner of the world didn't realized that Indonesia's government spent almost millions of US dollar during their presidential campaign. As usual, Islamic issues were used as a bait to get decisive vote from the Muslim communities which are the majority group in Indonesia.

Now... the main question is Why Indonesian government unwilling to spend public coffer for something worthy like what Dr Suryani have done?

  • Don't get me wrong, I have not intention to defend the Indonesian govt.

I just cant see the any link between the majority's religion and the lack of respect for human rights (to medicine in this case). In most countries, even the so called democracies, people with mental health problems are treated as second class citizens. In poor countries its worse, no matter the religion (ex Catholic majority Ethiopia and Erithrea)

  • Bali is majority Hindu. I think that you are confused with Indonesia on your side of the world. They are both in your neck of the woods. Mental health is neglected in many countries, including Shinto Japan. People feel ashamed and act out of that shame. Like many govs and families, they feel if they ignore the problem it will go away. The best example is the Alzheimer unit at nursing homes. Most of those folks are forgotten about by their families and never visited after admission.

  • @amaterasutenno simple.. corrupt governments

  • please learn to reason.. your country has problems within it self. dont blame it on the religion. the religion itself is perfect but the follower is not. and this clip shows nothing of islamic culture, bali is 93% hindu, i dont know where u got ur facts but please do not display such if you do not know.

  • why did this person get a thumb down? valid point buddy

  • same with christianity, same with all western religions

  • what other western religions?

  • oh well, i guess i meant ALL the diff. forms of christianity, my bad. There's so many you know, sometimes i forget that they are all equally stupid. sorry.

  • living angel.

  • very informative thanks for the vid

  • wow....how sad

  • amazing story.. very scary for me, because that could be me in those chains. im on similar drugs, im sure without them i would have the same symptoms as these people.

    this woman is a saint...really

  • To fail.
