Now there is a vacuum in the pipe, because all the gas has rushed out. This sucks the flame BACK IN, igniting the next spurt of propane. That's why it has a "throbbing" sound- it's exploding propane several times a second. The versions that are straight instead of bent generally use a valve to direct the force of the combustion.

Anyone can make one with just a welder and some pipe, and they almost never break when used properly. It's a good easy way to produce a lot of thrust cheaply, and is therefor used by inventors for insane concepts- like jet powered bicycles, dune buggies, or gliders.
