I rarely buy food in a convince store. I do eat out a lot though. Yesterday I had a montreal smoked meat sandwich on sour dough with coleslaw a dill pickle and onion rings.
I like a tuna rice ball and green tea. The nice thing is my wife and I work at the same company in Japan, I start at 8:00 and she starts at 9:00 so guess who brings lunch?
O_O Awwww that's what I miss about Japan, you can get reasonably healthy food on the go, whereas in the UK not so much, unless you pay out of your nose for it, I could go to a Japanese restaurant and get a bento box but that costs closer to £8 which is pricey for a quick lunch. Yum yum yum!
Now see, your combini bento looks sooo much yummier than mine did. I visited on a school trip for a week and we needed lunch for on the shinkansen between tokyo and osaka, so i grabbed one from the station. Although it still tasted good, it could've looked better like yours haha. Hopefully on my University exchange next year, i'll have better luck :) Love your videos! They've convinced me that i want to be a JET when i graduate :)
OMG I love konbini pastries! Cheesecake, cake rolls, chocolate truffles, cream puffs and on and on. And they're usually about 100-200 yen too so I kind of go a little crazy when I hit that aisle.
@stormko not sure, but the whole point is to not need them. Have your own, washable, reusable pair with you or at home. It's like going to the grocery store nowadays in my region - you have to have your own bag for the groceries, or the store charges you 4yen for each plastic shopping bag you need. Maybe we need a 4yen wooden chopsticks fee.
@myargonauts I can see it being difficult because Japan is a "wood culture", more so than America & Europe.
But I think you may have a point with the ¥4 fee like the grocery bags. There will always be times when a person doesn't have chopsticks on them, but the fee might encourage people to carry their own more often—not because of the cost, but because it's "thing" to do.
At least most places in Japan recycle wooden chopsticks.
@myargonauts there is actually in April 2006, the People's Republic of China imposed a five percent tax on disposable chopsticks to reduce waste of natural resources by over-consumption. This measure had the most effect in Japan as many of its disposable chopsticks are imported from China. - Wikipedia
Japan also recycles a lot of the chopsticks nowadays to combat the higher prices and environmental issues.
Off topic, could you comment or do a vid from your personal perspective on Yu Darvis being signed to the Texas Rangers for $60mil. Could you relay some of the atmosphere regarding him over there? What all do you know about him?
@visualvirtue sure - I could make a short video - as it's been on the front page of the paper recently, but I'm not a big sports fan, so I personally couldn't really comment
Don't worry about the wood; worry about the styrofoam. My go-to lunch is chicken tikka from the street carts in NYC, with, "white sauce", "red sauce", no onions, and extra "spice powder".
In japan, i get conbini lunch like this all the time.. it's CONBINIent!! well, too bad UK doesnt have something like this.. they just sell a microwave meal or something.
I'm eating some bacon and eggs with fried potatoes as I'm watching this. I'm really jealous of your delicious lunch! And now you made me drink a coke by mentioning it, haha.
Convenient stores in USA are useless they are worth that anything else. all they sell is junk food. and that junk food is nothing compared to what they sell in 7 Eleven in Japan or Lawson.
USA sucks big time I hate it what they sell here in US
Not convenience store so much as a few steps into the local supermarket. Straight to the deli end of the produce aisle. I could buy hot pizza or sandwiches but I usually get a small amount of, say chicken salad and a bulkie and scoop the salad up with the bread. $3.25. Look, I'm a nurse, life is not fancy.
only 470? it looked like a pretty basic one but it also looked delicious so not a bad price imo, particularly for the convenience. I didnt actually eat lunch today, wish i had what you had, some nice white rice is delicious
Nice looking lunch, I can't wait till I get to benefit from the awesome convenience stores in Japan. When I am working I usually get a can of Chunky stew for lunch. They are only $4 or so and I can use a bowl and spoon at work. Cheap and somewhat healthy lunch. If you want anything hot and ready from a Canadian convenience store you only have greasy unhealthy options.
@nisenihonjin the conbini I got this from is Popura, so maybe it's particular to them, but they have a whole bunch they offer this way - with fish, or chicken, or croquette, etc.
@TheTraveler12 the guys working at the conbini are students at my school, and since I'm a large guy, my guess is they gave me a little extra rice than they give a regular customer. :)
It's OK; trees are not a problem. They are a well managed-renewable resource. Farmers plant enough trees to supply us with paper products, which are all bio-degradable. Toilet paper, chopsticks or whatever; it's OK, wood is a crop, like anything else that we control. In the USA, we actually have controlled burns on public lands just to control the amount of wood available.
@baddogonline interesting info. But doesn't it take a number of years for a tree to grow big enough for it to be usable for paper products, etc? At least many places try to recycle the used chopsticks.
@baddogonline I was thinking the same thing. A large portion (not all I grant you) of disposable chopsticks are coming from managed and sustainable forests. These "forests" are actually grown and harvested for this exact purpose. Also, it should be noted that a huge percent also comes from bamboo, which is a highly sustainable grass - not a tree.
Jason. I'm always enjoying your videos. Thank you. I live in Kyushu and always request no chopsticks when at any convenience store or takeaway. According to a 2010 news article from the Japan Times, Japan uses 25 BILLION pairs of waribashi a year! Woah! Let's not contribute to the problem. "My Hashi" all the way!!
@myargonauts - Yeah, I've heard from many a gaijin on YouTube that Japan has NO Mexican restaurants. Even Taco Bells are pretty rare and mostly on military bases.
I love getting the lunches at my grocery store.. rice, kara-age, a couple bites of spaghetti, some potato salad (Japanese potato salad is the BEST), and a slice of sweet tamago. Mmmm.. just pop it in the microwave for a minute and it's SO GOOD! :)
Convenience stores in japan are great. When I was living there I was more of an egg sandwich kinda guy... I really miss the instant ramen over there, sure beats the cup o noodles where I'm at now.
Almost every time i went to the konbini when i lived in japan I would get a tuna mayo onigiri and fanta grape or a nikuman with calpis... Love 日本のコンビニ!! cant wait to finish my degree and get over there, hopefully on the jet program just like you.
I usually buy ice cream at Walgreens. >w< Now I'm craving some!
