the first time i heard this song i was on one of these 50 dollars boston to california buses with a bunch of hippies. It was 1973 and i was starting out my new life (so i thought) It was about 6 am and the sun was coming up driving across Kansas. The drivers name was ed and he was much wiser then his years and as a 20 year old i was taking it all in. I really was living that song that morning. Tom has been an inspiration ever since .
i was searching for a kind of sad melody and this song brings tears to my eyes. Tears of happiness. The song fits perfect right now and in so many other situation. Thank you Tom. Thanks for such feeling while listening. Thanks for a melody which direct goes into my heart.

I first heard of Tom Waits many years ago but for some reason I never got around to actually listening to his music. This is the first song of his that I've ever heard and I'm amazed. It has so much deep feeling in it.
This takes me back to listening to Tom in dive sailor piano bars in San Diego's Horton Square section. Back before it became The Gaslight District or whatever they call it now. There're still a couple of dive bars around but it's mostly Hard Rock Cafe' Yuppie Hell.
This song is long, cold nights driving back from my then-boyfriend's place, singing at the top of my lungs. The guy came and went, but my love for Ol' 55, and Closing Time as a whole, hasn't faded.

This isn't bad, but I prefer the arrangement that The Eagles did. Maybe because I heard their version first. Isn't that usually the way though?

First Waits song I ever heard on the radio. Back before tobacco and alcohol changed his voice. Saw him open for Zappa in 74, Both were great.

@MarcBrewer He does that on purpose to his voice. Listen to his new CD. The song Back in the Crowd is a beautiful ballad and his voice is great.

Now, that was a flashback! Walkin' down Atlantic Boulevard in Virginia Beach- Summer '73. Everything smelled like coppertone and cigarettes. Sweet.
