I thought Bob Backlund held the WWF Title for almost 5 years straight from 1978 - 1983. I know he lost to the Iron Shiek in December on 1983.
Also, Superstar Billy Graham beat Bruno Sammartino in 1977 and held the WWF Title for a year until he lost to Backlund. Ric Flair held the NWA Title for over 2 years from 1984 - 1986. Those are a few exceptions for a heel holding a World Title for a long time.
Roddy Piper should have been WWF World Heavyweight Champion. The thing is would Piper have been able to draw and make money like Hogan did? I know he would have drawn a lot of heat if he had beaten Hogan for the title.
