Is it safe to do this if your knee is prone to dislocation? I've dislocated my knee 3 times already, and I'm scared this might cause it to do it again.

@jveuduson the hold time can be different depending on the type of stretch (PNF, dynamic, etc)
but in the case of static stretching, what you're essentially doing is lengthening the muscle, and in order for that to actually take effect, typically a hold b/w 15-60 seconds is recommended (according to ACSM)
I'm an overweight male, and I can already do the splits, naturally ever since I was in my teens. But I don't know what good it is being able to split like this.

I actually have a problem with the butterfly stretch, where I find that my right leg seems to lock in place and simply causes pain without actually gaining any flexibility even after sitting in the position for upwards of 5 minutes... Any idea's on a resolve or a possible cause would be great.
dont know if i see it right but try to keep your legs completely down man otherwise your split is gonna be shot- your right leg seems to be leaning up towards the knee or im just seeing wrong
Wow nice this isn't bad. But I personally prefer dynamic stretches as I've improved so much in tangsoodo because of them but not asmuch with static as shown here. But I still do static :-)
@MrCodaman nah dude bouncing is bad. i cant tell you specifically what it does, but all i know is that if you want to stretch, hold it and dont bounce. i think it triggers the contraction reflex in your muscles and may lead to you straining or pulling whatever you're trying to stretch
would you say that flexiblity reduces your leg strength? I find that every time I do some kind of intense running exercise my legs tighten up, and any progress I make with getting splits just disappears.
@WuIzMe Flexibility wont really reduce leg strength, it just feels that way because your relieving the muscle tension. Take gymnasts for example, they can do full splits/over-splits and they still have very powerful legs.
The reason you lose progress for splits after intense exercise is because the muscle fibres tighten, which stop you stretching as far until the muscle fibres relax fully again.
I've experiences similar things and asked similar questions myself, hope this helps. ^_^

Could anybody tell me why a stretch must be kept for at least 30 seconds ? I mean scientificly ?
