The immensely amusing thing about the banana nonsense is that yellow bananas didn't appear till the 19th century; until then, bananas were cultivated as red bananas, and weren't very popular.
The yellow variety is the result of a mutation (ha ha!) which made the banana much sweeter, in addition to changing its color. This was the origin of the dessert banana, which we all know and love.
