We have deindustrialised extensively and are heading towards a servive based economy, but some manufacturing remains. The guy from Dragons Den (Evan Davis) recently made a documentary called; 'Made In Britain' which covers this subject. We do have a substantial trade defecit, It could be fairly easily remidied if the gov't actualy gave a fuck about anything other than filling their boots.

@hjenkinz We do produce and export quite a lot really. Unfotunately one of our biggest exports is weapons. We have deindustrialised extensively and are heading towards a servive based economy, but some manufacturing remains. The guy from Dragons Den (Evan Davis) recently made a documentary called; 'Made In Britain' which covers this subject. We do have a substantial trade defecit, It could be fairly easily remidied if the gov't actualy gave a fuck about anything other than filling their boots.

Also, I will grant that Karl has some good insights, but give him long enough with a complex issue and just watch him make a meal of it, he is not that smart. Democracies put power into the hands of the hoi polloi who are often a majority of simple people with simple understandings. Media and politicians exploit this for power and money. A good litmus test is a look at the education system within a democracy, the worse = a generally simple populous = thick leaders, the better = a generally sophisticated populous = smart leaders elected.

The US is the most hated Western nation though. Among the 27 countries surveyed, the US was viewed 30% positively, 51% negatively. The UK was viewed 45% positively, 28% negatively.
Yes, the UK is hated by some countries, but the whole world generally hates the US (for good reason I'd say).

well, it was only from the rise of scotish nationalism that the uk begun being know as the uk.. before then it all came under england and none took any notice, infact parts of the empire were known as england. Point being that there wasn't really any differenciation between England, Britian and the UK. Plus do you honestly think that empire didn't spread from england?.. there would have been empire without Scotland/wales/ireland, but not without england.

evreything from slaves to cotton and tobbaco was distributed from Scotland into the English markets and was brought in by scottish buisnessman that owned slave,cotton and tobbaco plantations.
