Is there anything Kevin Spacey can't do? What a great rendition of a true classic from one of the best entertainers America has ever spawned! Do I hear an amen? The sentiment of this tune still rings as true today as it did 40 years ago when it was created, the real measure of a classic. R. I. P. Bobby Darin, keep on keepin' on Kevin Spacey and yes, Rock On Shindiggers! P.S. thank you mhin and You Tube, Peace Out!
Maybe not,but you have to admit that they couldn't have found a better actor to portray Bobby Darin who is a dead ringer of him and is not a bad singer, either.
In the original broadcast/video, Bobby was center stage with the band behind him. There was a lovely lady singing harmony sitting in the audience in front of Bobby.
it refers to the assasination of Bobby Kennedy. Then the excalation of the Vietnam War.Kennedy is not mentioned directly,But in 68 there was real threat of another world war.700 million was the population of the combined modern day coalition.
He's singing about issues in the 60's ... mister black man is referring to racism is the US and 700M people is probably the population of the US and Europe ... oh yeah, Canada too.
Spacey did a great job. Seriously, no one else but him could have made the Darin story into a film. It was either Spacey, and Spacey's film, or it would never have existed. No one is even close to being able to play Bobby Darin.
If you listened carefully to both of them, back to back,Spacey had a BETTER voice at 44 than Bobby at 37. Of course the sound devices are better now. I loved the movie!! We don't know how Kevin's voice was amplified, etc.
I've just listened to them back to back, and you're absolutely right, Spacey has got a better voice, I love Beyond the Sea and listen to the sound track all the time.
Thanks, Spaceymania. I surely didn't mean to demean the great Bobby, but I was stunned to hear Spacey. Darin had a stage presence that was mezmering, and Spacey duplicated it. The close of that video was brilliant scripting. Surely it's one of my favorite musicals. Darin simply didn't take his amoxicillen before denal work, with his heart condition, and sepsis (total blood infection) was his fate. So preventable !!
I love Kevin Spacey. I could not believe what a fantastic job he did in the movie Beyong The Sea...and no he was not too old to play the part.... did not know he could sing like that
R.I.P Bobby Darin and nice thing to say, Amen, you will live on Bobby!

I love this song, the movie was terrific,Spacey really done it with justice, like he always does, i'm sure Bobby Darin would be proud.

Wish there were the video from the film but the recording IS really worth listening to, anyway!
This is the ONLY song of Bobby Darin's that I actually preferred to the original. I love Spacey's ending. (Before I get reamed - I LOVE BOBBY DARIN!!)
Was this how it happened? Was there a choir behind Bobby, just as Spacey has in the film? (The choir adds quite a lot for me.)
Anyway, THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting - this is a truly uplifting song & your sound quality is really good!!

Kevin Spacey had been wanting to do this project for years. No one could have done it with the dedicated passion he brought to it.

I believe it refers to the population of Africa at the time and goes along with the other lyrics (Mister Black Man, diamonds, game).

The only problem is Spacey hasn't made a living out of it like Darin. Even if he does- he is making a living off Darin's back
