I couldn't agree more. After "The New Rap Language," this is my favorite song that the Treacherous Three did. Forget "Yes We Can Can..." as much as that blew up, this will always be, in my eyes, the best single that they ever released. Black music deserves to reign supreme over all of its peers in the music industry, IMHO, and I'm glad that it's managed to become so successful (although I'm white, I agree immensely with all of your viewpoints).
I know what you mean. Guys like who I've got listed in my profile, MC Shan, U.T.F.O., Whodini, Doctor Ice and Run-DMC still get me hyped up. In contrast, artists like 50 Cent, Soulja Boy, Yung Joc, Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy and whatever other garbage is on the market focus more on their beats than stone-cold lyricism... which is a pretty good explanation as to why I detest pretty much ALL rap released after Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur's deaths. >:-(
Yeah. I know what you mean. We're probably the only remaining links to the true old-school days. I always liked having a unique, custom, original style, and choosing not to give in, sell out or join the bandwagon of 16-18 year old tweenagers who are constantly chatting on their cell phones, playing their cell phones or listening to music on their iPods.
I'm in the same boat as you here, but luckily, some of the people around my place are a bit more understanding and mature about it. Yet, they also conform to the latest (lamest) fads...
At my place, all it seems that people talk about are HORRIBLE rock bands (Avenged Sevenfold, Taking Back Sunday, Korn and what have you) or football (WOW, that's original; I haven't been able to go through one day of school without some kid spouting crap about some state's team (or ripping on me for supporting our Florida Dolphins who are ever so constantly on a downward spiral of self-destruction). Guess what, man? NOBODY CARES). >:-(
I totally agree-- bands that are/were actually good, like Nirvana or Pearl Jam, while slightly still popular, ignored mostly and shunned for modern crap like what you've said. I wish Hair Metal and Grunge were back-- the only band from today I really like is DragonForce, because they're actually original and they have talent and creativity!
I can tell where you're coming from. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Hair Metal and Grunge were absolutely incredible for their time. People just weren't able to truly appreciate them because of how advanced they are... the younger minds couldn't comprehend the deep messages contained within every song that they wrote, and the articulation within their lyrics was immensely interesting as well.
They were able to step their game up beyond playing the same tired guitar solo/riffs constantly and talking in those horribly contrived deep, "devilish" voices. I mean, it's like saying that guys like Rakim, KRS-One or Big Daddy Kane were horrible rappers because they never went platinum.
But they were probably the most serious and skilled new-school (at the time) artists, and the messages within their songs were very dark (One of R's songs,"Casualties of War," talks about basically him writing a letter to George Bush (the Sr. one) and explaining to him what was going to happen in the future if he did not work harder to try and get the soldiers better arms and protection, or just bring them home altogether, even showing the Twin Towers;
and, ten years later, everything took place, with Osama Bin Laden and his hellish, cruel, demented, ungodly underlings bombing them into little bits that flew all the way to Kingdom Come, with no hope of return). The things that he said in that older song (it actually came out the year I was born: 1992) with Eric B. could not have been any more frighteningly accurate. It STILL gives me chills every time I listen to it. As for Dragon Force, they're absolutely exquisite.
I couldn't show enough love and praise for a band that's able to be original and do many things that no one else has thought of beforehand... not to mention that they can be fun and playful in contrast to the hideously overdone basement demon facades that everyone's still pulling out of their asses.
It is nice to see that the people around your place are a bit more mature and understanding than where I'm at, although also shameful to see everyone joining every single bandwagon that pops up into existence. That's why you don't see a lot of kids in that class here on YouTube that have videos favorited that either haven't gotten over one million views or aren't related to events that have taken place at their schools.
Personally, I'm starting to become ashamed of beign a member of my generation, since I despise 90% of its culture-- Soulja Boy, Paris Hilton, 50 Cent, iPods, Reality Television, Nickelback?? THESE are supposed to represent US?! No way, I'd rather be stuck 10+ years in the past, with my Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Poison, Red Hot Chili Peppers, MasterBoy, MC Hammer, Michael Jackson, and Bell Biv DeVoe.
I couldn't agree more. It just seems like everyone is just pushing all of these new things to their exodus, and overadvertising EVERY SINGLE NEW PRODUCT THAT COMES OUT ON THE MARKET, REGARDLESS OF HOW POORLY-MADE, UNBENEFICIAL OR UNINSPIRED THEY ARE. The old-school Kangol hats are being kicked out the door for stupid, foolish dances (I get the urge to beat someone until they're black and blue when they ask me to do the Crank Dat dance (which I am SO glad I don't know)).
Makes me wish that guys like MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Heavy D., Spoonie Gee and Kurtis Blow could just walk back into the recording studios, and toss all of these untalented jacks like Chamillionaire, Li'l Bow Wow, Nick Cannon and Li'l Romeo onto the streets. Sorry, but practically everything from each era preceding the late 1990's whips the living hell out of anything nowadays. (Funny thing is, I was listening to Kool Moe Dee's "Gimme My Props" and "No Respect" while typing this. ^_^)
Haha, oops! Personally, what I'd really like to see is some of the great things of the past few decades come back so teenagers like you and me don't have to spend our youth reluctantly in a sh*tty pop-cultural nightmare.
I see what you mean! My bad right there, I guess. And that is an absolutely BRILLIANT and exquisite idea. 80's fashion is kind of coming back, but we need the music. I'm still rocking to stuff like "Beat It," "Thriller," "I'm Bad" and "Can't Touch This." Everyone else can take their "Crank Dat" and crank their asses off the stage and out of the recording studio and my room, because I don't like those punks one darned bit.
Seriously-- I wish a whole subculture for this stuff existed so we could just have our own "retro" world, and everyone else outside can take their piece of crap 2000's culture everywhere else. But there aren't enough people like us yet for that to happen... :-S
I know what you mean. The people uploading all of those retro logos are our first steps towards creating this universe. The ones bringing back all of the old-school music videos from the 1980's and 1990's are helping us out as well IMMENSELY. BUT WE NEED MORE!
I couldn't agree on a higher or more elite level if I tried. If only there were two Earths... one could have all of the foolish teenagers who always succumb to the hottest new things on the market, and the truly intelligent, relevant, eloquent beings who are continuing to show all of the GOOD musicians/artists/singers/movies/television shows respect and airplay. :)
Oh, wait! I just realized something. Rakim DID go platinum. Twice (once on his debut "Paid In Full" album with Eric B., and once on his "The 18th Letter/The Book Of Life" debut solo title). ^_^
I ESPECIALLY hate all of the artists that show no respect for their musical forebears (and there are a LOT of those nowadays; without realizing it, they are biting a lot of the old styles of musical composition, and giving no credit or props to all of the pioneers who made it possible for them to walk their ways).
I agree with you 100%.My young nephew swears it all started now,I told him he betta go back and checkitout. The new artist every time they get accolades need to mention the ones who started it all,and if they dont know they better research, peace.
Oh, sorry. I mean playing their PSPs. Not to mention that they can't hold an intelligent, eloquent, relevant conversation that's more than four words long, such as "f*ck you," "damn it," "this sucks," "you're gay" or "holy crap, that's cool."
