There is already the Calligra-Suite for us to love and care for, get the Snapshot, use it, bug report for them. Make it work great. Because sending bug reports to Adobe clearly is not wanted.
Really crappy Linux news in general IDK where the good news was. Nvidia, Sony and Adobe said screw us basically. And we have to pick up them screwing us. And then Ubuntu isn't profitable and the guy in charge of it would rather use an iPhone.
@cubesolverpro900 I tried the update to .595, ended up getting a bad download, and had to SBF back to stock. :/ so I'm still there, not even rooted at this point. I was hoping that Verizon would go ahead and push out Gingerbread so I could update, then root, but it hasn't happened yet.
Strangely enough, after the SBF, performance feels faster than the last time I was on stock. Quadrant begs to differ, but just scrolling home screens is much faster.
I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and i cant find any help at all to add 3d cube and i wanted to know if you could point me in the right direction to add it if you can? plz reply asp!
I like this new blur-effect you're using here for the background in your video :]
To the PS3 and Linux, it might sounds nice that hackers brought back the OtherOS function, but isn't it kinda risky that Sony is going to ban you, if they get notice of it?
@MegaManNeo In order to run Linux on your Ps3 you would need to be in an older firmware which doesn't access PSN, the updated firmware needed to access PSN does not have Linux Support. So they won't/can't ban you as it would be irrelevant. No reports of people being banned while using backups online, same goes with installing Linux when there was* a PSN work around with older firmwares.
@chris1abramczyk here in the US, it's possible for teachers to do that well at some places, but it really depends on the location. the college I went to, teachers are lucky to earn 50k/year (that's the highest paid ones).
Android rocks! As a matter of fact Open Source rocks! I want to see Steve Jobs and Bill Gates cry before I die. What do you think about open source's position in the software industry?
@swapniltech I think there's no place to go but up! I'm not one of those who honestly believes that Apple or MS will ever open source their stuff, and that's fine, but for those that do, I think more and more success will be had. Mark Shuttleworth said at UDS-O yesterday that Ubuntu's at 12 million users (approximately), and he foresees it jumping up to 200 million in the next few years.
Not saying that's terribly likely, but stranger things have happened. :)
Thanks your swift reply thisweeklinux if I may ask could you please view this video: titled "PS3 magic" and by custom frimware you mean that I will not be able to run the PSN when it gets back online as the jail broken frimware is version .55 not .60 which is the current version or can they both exist in a system and please tell me what you think about the video
@takefekees the video I found searching for that appears to be old information. The man speaking in the video was talking about Yellow Dog Linux, and I don't believe he ever mentioned PS3 Magic. Perhaps I found the wrong video.
However, you're right there. If you were to go with the .55 firmware, when/if the PSN comes back up, you probably wouldn't be able to connect without updating to the newest and losing the Other OS option. There may be a custom firmware update by then though.
In march 2011 Sony removed the feature and ability of using other Os mainly Linux on the Ps3 then hackers were unhappy and sent a punch to force Sony to reconsider...How does this apply to what you are saying and can there be a simpler method like before? and What do you think about the product Ps3 magic and how could Sony give that company the license to develop Linux and remov
e it all together as a feature from Ps3 thank you for reading and trying to help, it is definitely appreciated..
@takefekees I think at this point Sony probably won't be considering adding the "Other OS" option back on their own, so if you're interested in it, custom firmware is the way to go.
I will say, I don't actually own a PS3, so I can't give any real authoritative answer as to what your best bet is.
I love my iPhone. The thing with Apple is that they are very controlling, but that's what makes their products great. They are locked down and designed in a way where everything works beautifully. IMO Apple is the best OEM and designer out. A few things though, I like options, but not an overload, and I don't want to have to pay 2k for a simple comp. Therefore what I'm running on my main desktop atm is Arch Linux + GNOME 3. GNOME 3 is VERY simple and it let's me focus on what I need to do ;D
I would totally get a PS3 and get it to do things like run Linux, and still game of course, but I don't think I can. The reason being that all of this craziness was their fault, and they continue to blame it on hackers. Why would they sue Geohot, instead of just patching the vulnerability like every other company (Microsoft, Apple, etc.)? Don't call me a xBox fanboy, the PS3 was the superior company, but I just don't want to do business with them any more.
I think linux is great on computers but not so slick on phones as it could be. Apple sure has it flaws but can we argue about the awesomenes of theire products?
some of the macbooks have something similar to optimus with a dual gpu setup. but it isnt supported by much besides the GT310 I think. in any case glad to see they are stepping up with that :-) . as for the PS3, someone posted that it has no GPU with is inaccurate. it has one but a hypervisor limits it.
I wish my PS3 Slim had Linux support, I was very upset when I found out it wasn't compatible. Oh and one more thing..sorry to mention this but are you starting to get gray hair or is that just the camera?
Is it possible to have time links? I mean say like a list of times you can click on which would skip past or to a certain subject in the video? e.g. 2:42 would be for PS3 news etc. It's just I'm only interested in say one subject in each of these videos and I end up not watching them because, well, I can't be bothered :S Sorry, I don't want to sound mean, I just think it would help a few people out and increase views :)
@samgower it is possible. I've been trying to put them into all of the news videos, but I didn't have time to do this one last night (and I can't while I'm at work).
@thisweekinlinux 2.2, The 2.3 version is not (yet) available via samsung kies over here. I thought about upgrading it with odin but I've had some prety bad experiences with using those things like odin and one click lag fix (had to hard reset). I'm still a bit hesitating, have you any experience with that?
@MrDpsc nope, the only Android phone I've actually owned is the Droid X. I've messed with my parents' HTC Aria somewhat, and I've owned several tablets, but each device is different in the way it updates/upgrades, and the ROMs that are available.
@TheX3Gamer lol, thanks. I actually considered doing just that after college, but it would have taken several years of grad school, lots more money, and the job itself would pay a lot less than I make now (and I don't make much at all at my day job...)
We will keep on using wine to for our shooping needs. For some reason ever since I switched to Gonme3 from OpenBox Wine runs much faster and extremely smooth. Any idea why?
I never really liked the Gimp interface and it seemed to be rather lacking(or maybe just less obvious) compared to PS. And when I am stuck without PS, like in university I use pixlr instead because of the interface design.
@DAudIcI It runs faster/smoother on Gnome 3? Hm. Might have to do with Mutter vs Compiz? (Gnome 3/Shell runs Mutter).
There are some projects out there, I believe, to make GIMP's interface more similar to the one from Photoshop (gimpshop, maybe?). I'm still waiting for the 2.8 release with the single windowed mode... I've been talking about it since the show began. :P
@thisweekinlinux GIMP 2.7.2 (unstable) has the single-window feature. Release Notes: "Add a still incomplete and Single-window mode", but it won't start up in that mode i.e. you can't make it the default view. I look forward to the day this becomes a fully stable feature as the 3-window system is painful.
@siabost9deas yeah, I think it's been "in the works" for a while now (like I said, been talking about it since the beginning of the channel, Dec 2010). I'd love to see it too, because you're absolutely right. 3-windowed layout is just difficult to use.
@thisweekinlinux They are, in lack of a better word, disappointing. CS aside, Flash is not at its best for Linux either, especially 64bit version. I just find it strange that whenever they do a stunt like that people in Linux community get overexcited. :)
@thisweekinlinux Thanks. I'm in Aust, so I don't have to worry about the latest-and-greatest networks; I'm lucky if I can get a 3G signal. I really don't get along with touch screens/trackpads, so a physical keyboard is a must.
Hmm, you prefer Android :P actually I get why, I mean, I love my iPhone but I can't customize a thing without jailbreaking which lags the device, so I get where you're coming from but I still prefer iOS to Android. Just me though
@DrG241 funny thing? I was at Best Buy a little while back, saw the iPad 2, and decided to take a look at it...
I was completely lost again. Having all the apps on the home screens threw me off entirely. How was I supposed to know where anything was, since it was someone else's layout? :P
@thisweekinlinux Ah :P Have you heard all the things going on with the iPad 2? (how hard they are to get), 9 people I think it was were sent to hospital by Apple store staff in Beijing because they thought that people were jumping the line. I'm now alot more thankful to have my iPad 2 xD
Hm, ah well, no Adobe then, but from what I've heard, Lightworks is going to be opensource :D (not sure if you've talked about this already). Great news that Optiumus seems to work under Linux now, I have a 1215N so I'm really happy to hear that it seems to come :D Regarding iPhone, why did you think Canonical was so focused on making that work under Ubuntu? ;)
@Tarnus88 yup. I've talked about Lightworks a few times in the past. shame that they postponed the release of it on Linux for so long (december 2011 or so?) you'd think, since it's "open source", they'd provide the source and individual distros could build it themselves...
as far as the iphone thing, I was seriously thinking it had to do with the popularity of the platform, rather than a vested interest. :P
@thisweekinlinux Hm, many companies tend to clean their code up before releasing it(which is kind off nice, though I'm not sure if that's the case here...) According to lightworksbeta they plan to release the sourcecode in "the middle of 2011".
Maybe, but I find the thought of Shuttleworth saying "I want my iPhone to work under Ubuntu! Go and make it work!" to be more entertaining :D
would love to have photoshop and after effects on linux ... =/ but yeah we have the open source software we all love but no one can be compared to photoshop =/ thats a fact.
@LordBas2 sorry, moved furniture around yesterday, didn't get it back in quite the right place. also, had the camera out at the zoo, and forgot to change the shutter speed back to where it should have been.
methinks I need to come up with a whole new layout anyway. :)
running the simple stuff on the integrated card generally leads to similar performance, but better battery life (when done correctly, where the Nvidia card turns off)
@nailseagas my setup got thrown off a bit yesterday between going to the zoo (took the camera) and moving stuff around in the basement. I'll fix it before next week. Thanks :)
@thisweekinlinux yes, both. Unfortunately, the interface was too archaic for my taste. I am currently using Darktable but I would gladly support(buy) a good commercial RAW editor. That's the problem with Adobe, they don't think Linux users will spend money on their products so they don't support us. Flash is so smooth on Window too.
In another news, Attachmate has completed its acquisition of Novell, and has laid off U.S.-based employees working on the Mono project. If this means death to Mono, then this is by far the best news of the week!
I really like your videos and always watch them. There is one thing I miss in your news videos though. It's something to make the news more visible. You're talking about subjects en new OS's etc. but it goes quite fast, maybe you can make a little windows floating next to your head with a picture related to the subject, at least I would like that..
Gnome-shell is quite light on resources.... so I am not sure why made you conclude to that.... It runs super smooth on low powered netbooks which we all know have crappy gpu power where as Kde runs like a Dog on netbooks
@Linux4UnMe I dunno, i just know it bogged down my system too much, so I had to switch back to classic, that and there were a few glitches that annoyed me, and I also don't like the Unity bar, i don't liek all my windows being clustered in one box. I like being able to go to the task bar and easily pick which one i wanna open, instead of clicking a button and giving me the option to pick which one i want. Or not give me the option at all and just bring them all back up.
@thisweekinlinux Thats is a nice "on the surface" answer, but there is a deeper reason. All those developers are doing is perpetuating the crime called Microsoft.
I ran into the same problem when I left comments about the guitar modeling software, and why it was not developed or Linux.
It is not whether there IS a market for the product or not, they are merely sucking Microsofts prong.
@thisweekinlinux No surprise there... After all it's the same companies that believe DLCs with colour patterns, and a mission or two @ 14.99EUR are what the gamers really want. -.-
I guess they must be right on some extent. They wouldn't be selling them if they wasn't.
@thisweekinlinux Although that's true of the big budget games there are still enough games on Linux to make this something that could be nice to see being implemented by some of the larger distros.
Imagine if a distro like Ubuntu could upload high scores for any games that are installed via apt-get to a leader board on their servers to be compared with other Ubuntu users.
If the API existed I'm sure a lot of the Linux game projects out there would make use of it.
@thisweekinlinux Except that Linux is a perfectly viable platform for games so they are WRONG. I'm sure you're aware of how the humle indie bundle raked in more from Linux users than from Mac. Granted Linux gamers are desperate for anything that they can run natively. lol But still, they payed more on average than the other two.
In any case I'm not a gamer at all, so it makes little difference to me. What I would love is for Ubuntu to become profitable. *fingers crossed*
@egadw Honestly you're the first person whom I've come across to say such a thing. Having run Windows my whole life up until a year ago I can personally attest that Linux is superior in every way. It's just that game developers aren't giving it any attention.
@thisweekinlinux I wish i could ditch windows but it gets better support for games. I really hope at some time in the future that the video game platform steam supports Linux. Also the driver support for my graphic card hasn't been to good on linux.
@godsmackerna Many Windows games are not on Mac either, compared to Windows, Mac has very few games and Linux has no games compared. It's quite sad really, these developers need to realize the potential of Linux and Mac.
Please -- stop ending your sentences with an upward inflection. Are you asking us a long series of questions?

If I were on another provider like AT&T, I might look at the Motorola Atrix, since it has the option to plug into a laptop-type dock.
thisweekinlinux 9 months ago
@thisweekinlinux Thanks. I'm in Aust, so I don't have to worry about the latest-and-greatest networks; I'm lucky if I can get a 3G signal. I really don't get along with touch screens/trackpads, so a physical keyboard is a must.

Hopefully they'll get that one working. :/

Hmm, you prefer Android :P actually I get why, I mean, I love my iPhone but I can't customize a thing without jailbreaking which lags the device, so I get where you're coming from but I still prefer iOS to Android. Just me though
DrG241 9 months ago
@DrG241 funny thing? I was at Best Buy a little while back, saw the iPad 2, and decided to take a look at it...
I was completely lost again. Having all the apps on the home screens threw me off entirely. How was I supposed to know where anything was, since it was someone else's layout? :P
thisweekinlinux 9 months ago
@thisweekinlinux Ah :P Have you heard all the things going on with the iPad 2? (how hard they are to get), 9 people I think it was were sent to hospital by Apple store staff in Beijing because they thought that people were jumping the line. I'm now alot more thankful to have my iPad 2 xD

@DrG241 I hadn't, but that's interesting. :P

@123Ubuntu on most of them, I'm using Arch Linux with virtualbox on top, and Ubuntu 11.04 running inside of that virtualbox.
However, i did at least one 11.04 video on my laptop using ffmpeg

Hm, ah well, no Adobe then, but from what I've heard, Lightworks is going to be opensource :D (not sure if you've talked about this already). Great news that Optiumus seems to work under Linux now, I have a 1215N so I'm really happy to hear that it seems to come :D Regarding iPhone, why did you think Canonical was so focused on making that work under Ubuntu? ;)
Tarnus88 9 months ago
@Tarnus88 yup. I've talked about Lightworks a few times in the past. shame that they postponed the release of it on Linux for so long (december 2011 or so?) you'd think, since it's "open source", they'd provide the source and individual distros could build it themselves...
as far as the iphone thing, I was seriously thinking it had to do with the popularity of the platform, rather than a vested interest. :P
thisweekinlinux 9 months ago
@thisweekinlinux Hm, many companies tend to clean their code up before releasing it(which is kind off nice, though I'm not sure if that's the case here...) According to lightworksbeta they plan to release the sourcecode in "the middle of 2011".
Maybe, but I find the thought of Shuttleworth saying "I want my iPhone to work under Ubuntu! Go and make it work!" to be more entertaining :D

ADOBE I HATE YOU ! :D (somehow) :D
would love to have photoshop and after effects on linux ... =/ but yeah we have the open source software we all love but no one can be compared to photoshop =/ thats a fact.

I prefer that you move away from the camera (just like in the old vids). Also, the brightness is too high IMO.
I still do not get the Optimus technology. Why would you run 'simple' applications on your onboard device, instead of your graphics card?
LordBas2 9 months ago
@LordBas2 sorry, moved furniture around yesterday, didn't get it back in quite the right place. also, had the camera out at the zoo, and forgot to change the shutter speed back to where it should have been.
methinks I need to come up with a whole new layout anyway. :)
running the simple stuff on the integrated card generally leads to similar performance, but better battery life (when done correctly, where the Nvidia card turns off)

And putting your wife before us viewers? What's wrong with you man? ;-)

@nailseagas my setup got thrown off a bit yesterday between going to the zoo (took the camera) and moving stuff around in the basement. I'll fix it before next week. Thanks :)

setsallset 9 months ago
@setsallset have you tried RawTherapee or UFRaw?
thisweekinlinux 9 months ago
@thisweekinlinux yes, both. Unfortunately, the interface was too archaic for my taste. I am currently using Darktable but I would gladly support(buy) a good commercial RAW editor. That's the problem with Adobe, they don't think Linux users will spend money on their products so they don't support us. Flash is so smooth on Window too.

I really like your videos and always watch them. There is one thing I miss in your news videos though. It's something to make the news more visible. You're talking about subjects en new OS's etc. but it goes quite fast, maybe you can make a little windows floating next to your head with a picture related to the subject, at least I would like that..

I don't like GNOME Shell, it used up a lot of graphical power and lagged all my computers, and it was hard to use and I just didn't like it.
HeadmasterFox 9 months ago
@HeadmasterFox
Gnome-shell is quite light on resources.... so I am not sure why made you conclude to that.... It runs super smooth on low powered netbooks which we all know have crappy gpu power where as Kde runs like a Dog on netbooks
Linux4UnMe 9 months ago
@Linux4UnMe I dunno, i just know it bogged down my system too much, so I had to switch back to classic, that and there were a few glitches that annoyed me, and I also don't like the Unity bar, i don't liek all my windows being clustered in one box. I like being able to go to the task bar and easily pick which one i wanna open, instead of clicking a button and giving me the option to pick which one i want. Or not give me the option at all and just bring them all back up.

We see games for Windows & gamed for Mac Why there's no game for Linux ((What I mean games like Crysis, COD, BattleField, etc.....)
godsmackerna 9 months ago 2
@godsmackerna a lot of game companies believe Linux isn't a viable platform, so they don't develop for it.
thisweekinlinux 9 months ago 14
@thisweekinlinux But they didn't even try.
Imagine how much money people will save, how much people will leave Windows for Linux?
If I lived to see this day coming I will leave Windows Immediately.
godsmackerna 9 months ago
@thisweekinlinux if I could get all of my games like Crysis COD and stuff without emulation on Linux and full hardware accelleration I would switch!
sonic3243 9 months ago
@thisweekinlinux Thats is a nice "on the surface" answer, but there is a deeper reason. All those developers are doing is perpetuating the crime called Microsoft.
I ran into the same problem when I left comments about the guitar modeling software, and why it was not developed or Linux.
It is not whether there IS a market for the product or not, they are merely sucking Microsofts prong.
analyzingfunny 9 months ago
@thisweekinlinux No surprise there... After all it's the same companies that believe DLCs with colour patterns, and a mission or two @ 14.99EUR are what the gamers really want. -.-
I guess they must be right on some extent. They wouldn't be selling them if they wasn't.
Nitrozzy7 9 months ago
@thisweekinlinux Although that's true of the big budget games there are still enough games on Linux to make this something that could be nice to see being implemented by some of the larger distros.
Imagine if a distro like Ubuntu could upload high scores for any games that are installed via apt-get to a leader board on their servers to be compared with other Ubuntu users.
If the API existed I'm sure a lot of the Linux game projects out there would make use of it.
DetonatorOrgan 9 months ago
@thisweekinlinux Except that Linux is a perfectly viable platform for games so they are WRONG. I'm sure you're aware of how the humle indie bundle raked in more from Linux users than from Mac. Granted Linux gamers are desperate for anything that they can run natively. lol But still, they payed more on average than the other two.
In any case I'm not a gamer at all, so it makes little difference to me. What I would love is for Ubuntu to become profitable. *fingers crossed*
baillou2 9 months ago
@baillou2 Linux may be a viable platform it is still inferior to the Windows Platform.
egadw 9 months ago
@egadw Honestly you're the first person whom I've come across to say such a thing. Having run Windows my whole life up until a year ago I can personally attest that Linux is superior in every way. It's just that game developers aren't giving it any attention.
baillou2 9 months ago
@baillou2 The drivers aren't as optimised as they are for Windows even if we had good DirectX support the drivers would need to be optimised as well.
egadw 9 months ago
@thisweekinlinux I wish i could ditch windows but it gets better support for games. I really hope at some time in the future that the video game platform steam supports Linux. Also the driver support for my graphic card hasn't been to good on linux.
chistogo3 9 months ago
@godsmackerna Many Windows games are not on Mac either, compared to Windows, Mac has very few games and Linux has no games compared. It's quite sad really, these developers need to realize the potential of Linux and Mac.
filippo333 9 months ago
@godsmackerna - The Linux graphics support is horrible.
