Sadly, this will never be re-released again or have the sequels done for it. The author of the original books hates this movie and I'm sure he'll never give permission for any re-release even in Japan.
@Wyrmshadow No they didn't. This was made first in 1984, it wasn't released on VHS so Harmony Gold recycled the music for Sentinels afterwards. It is officially Lensman music. Shame on you for thinking otherwise !
The reason it's never been on DVD is because Doc Smith's estate has loudly expressed their desire to take a softball bat to everyone involved since the movie has nothing to do with Lensmen.
Off the subject: has anyone heard of an anime called PHOENIX: CHAPTER OF SPACE? (or HINOTORI: CHAPTER OF SPACE).
It is a classic Osamu Tezuka manga from his Phoenix series but is directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, so it has the same art-style as this, Demon City, Wicked City, Cyber City, Goku Midnight Eye, Ninja Scroll and Running Man...but seems to be the one that got away !!
It looks really good, but absolutely nothing about it anywhere but a clip on the Tezuka website. Worth looking for :)
This is a very different translation than what I taped off of the Sci Fi channel so many years ago... one of the scenes on Buzzkirk's ship is even cut. (Come see the engine compartment! That's okay, the less I know, the better I'll feel.)
i watched this when i was really young! ii just remember it sumhow and it was my 1st anime film i ever watched im 26 now and ive never stopped watching anime since!!! epic film!!! thanks for upload!!
@Da1shocker It might be the other way round. I think it was used here first and then recycled.
But I don't think Macross was butchered that much, nor this, though its edited. This and Robotech have very good original HG scores (by likes of Peter Davison, Michael Bradley and Ulpio Minucci). The eastern and western versions have just become different experiences.
I've watched this dozens of times ...I love it !!!too bad that the most extraordinary part of this film (sound)was ruined.thanks very much mate for uploading this.by the way the soundtrack is E-P-I-C.
@yannisbskt No problem. You can download this avi file from my userpage, it has the sound corrected in stereo. Worth getting because this version is very rare. Tah.
@JohanElectric anything about lensman is rare, you can't find it at all, i would love to see it remade, but nothing over the top, just keep with the books laid out and follow it, but yeah love the movie, i just wish they continued with the story,
Look at the novels. No cheap jokes like test drives on falling-apart ships, no teenagers trying to fill the shoes of Galactic Patrol graduates. No. Sorry. Start with Triplanetary (from a used book store, or Amazon, or interlibrary loans), and build from there, and if you find a screenwriter with the panache of Doc Smith (difficult, but not impossible), you might just have something. Certainly, the technology is at last up to the challenge.

Its worth mentioning that this is based loosely on a series of books by one of the original space opera writers, a good mister E.E. Doc Smith, who apperently got the fellow that made the anime into sci-fi to begin with. So while its certainly not Hollywood, Japan can't really claim credit here either.
Pity too, I enjoyed the movie and the books that I've read so far. Never would have read the books too if the film hadn't been made. I get they are quite different but... Ahh well. Pity is all I can say.
Hollywood isnt all bad, it occasionally puts out some gems but when I want consistency I always go with a good anime. The stories in animes are often original and the animation is just something you hardly ever see in western animation. Japanese animators seem to put so much pride into thei work, i love it. All this talk about detail in anime gets me thinking about Ghost In the Shell. That movie had some of the most awesome animated scenes ever.
I have this on vhs (don't laugh, I have a dvd player too, lol) Anyway, this is one of the most underrated in my opinion, animes ever! It has a grerat story, and good action. I love the characters too!
Oy! Very sloppy how Harmony Gold in 1988 prepared the dubbing for this classic. I'm glad I got hold of the Streamline Pictures 1990 redubbed version, which I'd bet is closer to the intent of the original 1984 Japanese movie. Gotta put it on DVD before the VHS tape starts going bad. Got mine for $20 in 2000. Want one now, it'll cost you at least $50, maybe $80.
@Hammern28 I assume you have the Streamline Pictures version, yes? Much better than Harmony Gold. I first saw it on the Sci-Fi Channel in 1993. Bought the VHS in 2000. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Doc Smith's estate (or family) disavowed this movie. They didn't exactly approve of the adaptation when they saw the final product. I've got to READ all 7 books soon enough to see why.
@Hammern28 I agree. I recorded it when it was shown on an anime marathon on the Sci-Fi channel at least 15 years ago. The music and the dialog from that showing is completely different from what's here on YouTube, and they cut out a few things.
For instance, the harvester got clogged with the corn. After the guy asked a question, the robot answered, "Affirmative, and you, like everything else on this planet, are no help."
i found the episode!first 6........but in greek(im greek and i found it on an old vhs club!!!coool hu??????..........everyone interests in p.m me..........
QUESTION: Why does Hollywood keep churning out GARBAGE?! WHY CANT THEY MAKE A MOVIE with the same attention to detail, the same vision, the same SCALE as an Anime movie like this? I mean, look at this shit, its about 25 years old and it looks fuckin' awesome. Sure, the clothes and characters are dated, but look at the sets. Look at the ships, look at the consoles and control panels, look at the depth... look at the scale of space. Look at that junk floating in space. Hollywood BLOWS.
(1) Yeah, someone would have to be a moron to not completely agree with you. I don't know why modern film. music and sci-fi have lost heart, but it must be something to do with the natural course of human development. We live in a highly democratic age related to information, so not only is there such a thing as "reality TV", putting amateurs into decourated positions that imitate old styles, but we also have people with no vision being drafted into the film-making industries as well.....
(2) ....they seem to make films "by the numbers", which means we can see a ton of ALIENS imitations: all in derelicht spaceships, with a dark monster stowed away somewhere in the neverregions of the ship, etc. but straight-to-DVD crap for not being as innovative as the original
Yes, even the junk in this anime looks better than the machines in modern anime. I'm glad you have heart, but many kids are being brainwashed by these modern graffitti styles, we need a renaissance before's too late.
@JohanElectric Thanks for the reply! I just went on a spree of RANTS last night. I watched the 2nd trailer to Skyline, the treaser trailer looked dark and fascinating. After seeing trailer #2, it looks like a 1950's cheesey monster movie. Tenticles grabbing a helicopter? COME ON! Its another 2012-style movie, big budget action flick. Number Four looks like crap, too. I am MAD that we DONT have a moon base, Mars base and many large spacestations I can vacation at, taking flight on a space plane.
Culture is 1 reason - kids are torn in half on TV. The U.S. is too sensitive to those things. US Films rarely show evil triumph over good. US markets aren't willing to view evil winning on screen. (Studio Ghibli anime were originally altered to match US Market Studies). Cultures abroad are more openly accepting to strange concepts.
You'd be surprised at how many "Blockbusters" were "Stolen" and acknowledged only after it earned billions. (Research "Departed", "The Lakehouse", "Ponyo")
@mrjustin5 "Hollywood Blows".....ur just NOW finding that out, lol! Anyway, I feel you! This is an awesome anime, and I hope nothing further is done to take away from the splendor of this film. I have this film in it's orignal dub. I prefer that! Everything h-wood touches turns to mush!

Wow this is convenient I was just looking for English Versions of Lensman on different sites. It must have been fun taking this from VHS, to DVD to AVI or MPG witchever you loaded it as. Thanks for the efforts though prob one of the more popular clasics of anime :-D
This is a classic, still got my vhs version, great movie got it around the same time as Akira, RG Veda and Odin when Manga video started bringing them to the uk. Nothing beats Akira though.
definitely not the original opening. The video clips are, but not the music. Plus the opening credit txts weren't there ether..... God Im a fucking nerd for remembering that
This will always be Robotech Sentinals Music. Honestly Harmony Gold. Are you that lame and poor that you have to use Sentinals music for everything because you paid for it?
i have this in VHS and its from streamline, and i like both the streamline and the harmony one both r great i guess its just a matter of taste, and well this movie rocks, and i dont know wher ei read that theres the posibility to make a new version of it which i think it could be awesome since the technology these days its awesome
Thank you for uploading this as it is important that this version is archived. However why anyone would praise this version or its soundtrack is far beyond my understanding. Both the dub and soundtrack seem cheap and haphazard, as is the case with most stuff Harmony Gold had a hand in - and Carl Macek before Streamline as well for that matter. Always love those titles that look like they were done at an AV repair shop.
The Streamline version is lightyears above this first attempt.
The streamline version is probably the better voice dubbing, but the soundtrack music here is excellent.
John Williams and Star wars set a standard for herioc music, but this is excellently dramatic synth music in its own right. Watch part (7/9) and listen to that medley !! it doesn't strike me as cheap since people can't really emulate this spirit today. Very rich music in my opinion.
@InsaneDavid Aye. They saw the (deliberate) flaws in the Harmony Gold version, the way HG went out of their way to sanitize it for a "mainstream" audience. Consider the way they edited the scenes in which Helmuth tears apart his mission commanders.
Raw animation like this is not meant to be watered down into some sort of CARTOON! ANIME DEFINITELY AIN'T NO CARTOON! Sadly, that is why the U.S. lags LIGHT-YEARS behind Japan when attempting to make animated sci-fi and fantasy.
I think in the 80s and early 90s anime wasn't yet a recognized category in the west, so most of the stuff only fell into the children's section because it was the only way to communicate it. Just about all those 80s cartoons were Japanese or American-Japanese co-productions. like Mask and Inpsector Gadget, etc.
I think that the importers now will never put anime into chidlrens section again since it now has its own mature category.
Christ, nice this is here, but I recommend watching the Streamline version as opposed to Harmony Gold (although, I think both were Carl Macek.....nevermind....)
Wasn't there a few different english dubs of this ? I have a bootleg from ebay that was from sci-fi channel (mid to late 90's) that's different then this one.
Yes, there was a Streamline Pictures English Dubbed version of the Lensman Movie which was the full original and uncut version from the original Japanese version with the original soundtrack from the original Japanes version. The Streamline Pictures English dubbed version is much better dubbed and voice acted as well.
heeeyyy where i can find the soundtrack of this.. i've already bought the 20th anyversary music disc of robotech masters and yeah some tracks are in there but not all tracks from lensaman, especially i want the battle, acction soundtracks, can anyone help me? i'd would be thankful for that
I've been searching for that soundtrack for years. The composer Peter Davison now makes yoga-stimulation music.
I emailed him and he said he gets a lot of requests for Lensman music, but he's lost the original master tapes because he's made so much music he's been clumsy by leaving tapes everywhere and can't find anything ! A Massive shame.
If you email him again it might push him to look harder, it'd sell like hell if it was put on CD.
In my country we have a different dub (all but the mohawk guy's VAs are different) but with more scenes and all the original music left intact, but this dub is interesting. If I could, I'd upload the American dub and see what you would think of it.
Did you copy this from Sky Movies around 1989? I think I did the same but I have lost it since. Thanks fro putting this up, brings back good memories.
Sadly, this will never be re-released again or have the sequels done for it. The author of the original books hates this movie and I'm sure he'll never give permission for any re-release even in Japan.

This will always be Robotech Sentinals Music. Honestly Harmony Gold. Are you that lame and poor that you have to use Sentinals music for everything because you paid for it?

lol, one of the guys in the control room looks like Takakazu Abe.

i have this in VHS and its from streamline, and i like both the streamline and the harmony one both r great i guess its just a matter of taste, and well this movie rocks, and i dont know wher ei read that theres the posibility to make a new version of it which i think it could be awesome since the technology these days its awesome

@CookyMonzta

ExilePrime 2 years ago 2
Yes, there was a Streamline Pictures English Dubbed version of the Lensman Movie which was the full original and uncut version from the original Japanese version with the original soundtrack from the original Japanes version. The Streamline Pictures English dubbed version is much better dubbed and voice acted as well.

I agree...but I can't deny hearing Steve Kramers voice acting...he was always a favourite.

heeeyyy where i can find the soundtrack of this.. i've already bought the 20th anyversary music disc of robotech masters and yeah some tracks are in there but not all tracks from lensaman, especially i want the battle, acction soundtracks, can anyone help me? i'd would be thankful for that
toyx24 2 years ago
I've been searching for that soundtrack for years. The composer Peter Davison now makes yoga-stimulation music.
I emailed him and he said he gets a lot of requests for Lensman music, but he's lost the original master tapes because he's made so much music he's been clumsy by leaving tapes everywhere and can't find anything ! A Massive shame.
If you email him again it might push him to look harder, it'd sell like hell if it was put on CD.

@toyx24 do you have the opening track?i've searching it for years too
eimaiokalyteros 1 year ago
In my country we have a different dub (all but the mohawk guy's VAs are different) but with more scenes and all the original music left intact, but this dub is interesting. If I could, I'd upload the American dub and see what you would think of it.

hattori5891 2 years ago
Did you copy this from Sky Movies around 1989? I think I did the same but I have lost it since. Thanks fro putting this up, brings back good memories.
johnbk80 2 years ago
Yeah, from Sky Movies around 1990 !
It had an opening like "4;00 o'clock kids movie" at the beginning I cut off, with transformers and other cartoons.
Nice to think you could come home from school at 4;00 and watch something like this...
