Text Base games are pretty cool because you can do a lot of things. I played one called Amnesia where you wake up in a hotel room naked. So I began to screw around and typed in "leave" while I'm still naked. Then I got arrested lol

to get to the grotto (last room of the game) you gad to collect i believe it was 13 diffrnt items from the Zork empire, and place them all in the trophy case located in the house. I did this, and the entrance to the grotto did NOT open...WTF?!? u know how long it took me to get all items????

I couldn't find Zork available on cassette (yes I'm that old) so I had to wait until I could afford a 5¼" floppy drive. To find games one may look for "interactive fiction" which seems to be a "modern" term for text adventure.

I don't know if there is alot of interest, but two days ago I wrote a peice of python middleware that makes it possible to play Zork or any Z-machine game for that matter in an irc channel.(I'm sure this has been done before, a kid could write the code as it is pretty rudimentary). It is ran by a bot in a channel. I would be glad to run a 24hr channel on freenode if there is much interest.

Yes, many of the text adventure games of that era were originally coded for the z-machine or ported to other systems. You can download z-machine emulators for free as well as the .dat and .z5 games.

But on a related note they never metioned that the orginal Zork was not called Zork it was Dungeon and that when it became Zork it was split into 3 sepreate games. Plus despite being just walls of text is still a blast to play both the orginal "Dungeon" and the infocom version

I can still picture many of the locations and characters in my mind after 25+ years.... that's the power of a good text adventure!
