  • The volume on this video is pretty low...

  • I agree with you, br33zin. A roof skylight could be kicked out and a person saved. The architectural window in Jay's loft--not so much. Have a wonderful holiday.

  • I have a 6th, and one extremely crucial. Fire egress. In the loft out the window--but window too small. Out the kitchen out the window--but window might be too small. The most likely place for fire is main floor, and a homeowner would be trapped in the loft and killed (or suffocated by the smoke). Small spaces, heaters, propane, candles, etc. Every time I see Jay's home, esp the loft, I cringe at the lack of emergency egress.

  • @coolkayaker1 I couldn't agree more but this could be altered. By putting in a skylight you could offer yourself a larger exit. Although it would be to the roof a jump from there instead of being killed would of course be better...In my opinion at least

  • How hard would it be to install solar panels? Then, you're really off the grid, or at least edging close.

  • Thanks for posting this! I've been chewing on the idea of getting a Tumbleweed for some time now, and I'm excited to have such a thorough review of improvement suggestions.

  • check out this guys website, its ace! Lots of excellent related videos and great ideas. Thanks

  • Good ideas but delivery is really poor!

  • Ryan, great improvement ideas, but the one negative to the vid is your delivery: You just seem waaay too low-energy and mellow.

Drink a cup of coffee next time. =]

Btw, if I go Tiny House, I will definitely be using some of your ideas. I too like Shafer's designs, but they tend to lack that last bit of practicality that would put them over the top. =\

  • Would radiant floor heating provide sufficiently for a tiny home? How much more money would it take to install and heat the home compared to the standard fireplace Jay installs in his homes?

  • @DevilsAdvocateism I have to admit, radiant floor heating was the one idea offered in the vid that I kind of scratched my head on.

Seemed like 'overkill', and not keeping in line with the philosophy behind having a tiny house to begin with.

However, maybe it's cheaper/simpler to install than is commonly realized.

  • I think his homes are way over priced. No should be more than $10,000 for something like that.

  • @jeminijem1 You mean if they build it, right? I know we'd spend a hell of a lot less if we built it ourselves.

  • Thank you for taking the time to do this. Thank you for the ideas. Please know that the negative comments are just people moving through videos and making statements. Don't take it personal. All of us who are learning or enjoying these videos don't pay attention to those "others". Thanks again!

  • where can i find flexible shelving?

  • Excellent suggestions! I wasn't thinking about many of those, but I would definitely require at least the hot water.

  • I think they should add glass or wood doors to all the shelves.so when you move the house stuff does not fall out.I really like the wagon design, it kinda reminds me of the gypsy wagons from fable 2, but it looks like you will have way less head space in the loft :( I guess it doesn't matter if you just sleep up there but what it you want to do some thing more ;D.I would get one for traveling but I don't think I could live in one full time.

  • A comment on the on-demand hot water heater re. water conservation: I recently stayed in a house with an on-demand set-up and it took much longer to heat than I expected. Maybe it was just that particular unit, but it was a good minute or longer, which meant a lot of water went down the drain every time I needed to wash my hands or a dish. Not so good if you need to conserve water.

  • @bessiewapp

I have a "tankless" or "on-demand" hot water unit and it takes up to 10 seconds to get hot, no way over a minute. My gas and water bill are lower and that' matters a lot, as well as it taking up less space.

  • @barstoolguru. should follow your own advise. if you don't want to watch it, go somewhere else, jackhole.

  • @barstoolguru you didnt watch this did you

  • 1) Jay uses a little propane "fireplace" that was designed for use on boats. For off-grid, propane (in tanks) is far more practical that electric. But propane fired underfloor heating is complex.

    2) Awesome idea, but it would be harder to make the bed with footlockers.

    3) Awesome idea, and probably worth the money.

    4) Ehhh, only useful if you use your tiny home as a travel trailer. I suspect most will use this like a mobile home and use blocks and straps.

    5) True.

    PS: Talk faster, or edit.

  • This house is a fire hazard, you will die if this was set on fire.

  • to improve on your video, you could list the 5 points at the start, so we don't have to listen all the way through

  • @104BIO, questions are relevant. From what I gathered, you can do composite toitets. You can fit 2 people. Ppl for sleepovers? You can have a little bed in the main room that hides underneath your desk during the day. It has a great insulation system, you can have AC and hook it to power/electricity, all the utilities you get as any other house, see other videos for the actual building/plumbing/wiring. You can park to a front/back yard and so on.

  • I love this!

  • This guy can't even fit in the damn houses... -.-

  • 1. Where does the waste go when you goto bathroom?

    2. What if you want to invite your girlfriend/boyfriend over for sleep overs?

    3. What if you want to marry and have children? Where is the space?

    4. What happen in summer? This tiny house look really hot.

    5. How do you get electricity, gas, water? Do you have to live in a trailer park all the time?

  • @104BIO

too many stupid questions, just buy yourself a big 2,000-4,000 sq ft house and save all the questions. if u have to ask u would not be comfy in a tiny house

  • Also check out SinkPositive. the toilet lid that is a functional sink that drains into the toilet bowl saving space and water bills!

  • Buy junk yard tires. They're cheaper and perfectly safe in you know what to look for. If you don't know what to look for then learn.

Frugal and resourceful > spendthrift neo-marxist inefficiency.

With regards to the water heater tax credit thing, people should reduce their dependency on government handouts and pay for stuff out of their own damn pockets instead.

It wouldn't be right for me to steal from you to pay for my pet project would it? I despise self-righteous mooches.

  • @nismobeach So you have some valid points here... and i hate to be that random youtube narcissist just insulting other people's comments, but you are coming across as a textbook self-righteous douche. Even though you might not be a mooch your kiiinda being a hypocrite here. I had to say this b/c i hate how many eco-conscientious people seem to be self-righteous douches. Your givin us eco-friends a bad rep so CHILL THE HELL OUT! Keep your ideals to yourself if you're gonna be a douche about it.
