Wow! I just saw this, don't know where I've been for the past three months (oh wait, China), so proud of you girls. DEFINITELY deserved wayyyyy higher than 4th place, but placement doesn't matter at all. This was sooo precise and sharp it actually blew my mind, and props to leadership for some amazingly original arm movements!
I graduated from NHS in 94. I'm glad to see you girls have kept some traditional drill moves and incorporated some new ones. Newport has always been strong on tradition in my eyes. Hope that never changes. I'm gonna have to agree with jjjewunit90. Good job ladies.
Out of the 4A drill routines that I've seen, this is my favorite. You did an amazing job, it was wonderfully executed and I love the choreography. You also have spectacular transitions.
Get with the times? Since when were ALL the drill teams trying to transition to Utah state drill teams? This is such an incredibly rich routine in choreography and execution, and they definitely do not look like cheerleaders...cheerleader wish they could be as cool as drillers...honestly. Unitards are great...but its all about the skirts and sweaters that made Washington drill what it is today. Keep it up ladies, you still have MANY fans that respect REAL, TRADITIONAL drill.
OMGGGG Can we just love Drill for what it is and not make all of these comparisons!!!! I love it ALL as long as it's executed properly, one is no more entertaining than the other. This is very Juvenile!!!! Great job Newport!!!!
What's doubly ironic is, Utah's been doing their thing - unitards, headstands and all - since at least 1998. Washington teams who take the "military" look on do bring their own spin to it, which can be very interesting, fun and beautiful (would never put it past 'em), but I hope there will always be an ample supply of teams in WA that keep OUR traditional take on precision dance alive and thriving.
And I think there will be. Some schools (not just teams!) seem to really love and identify w/ it.

The "unitard" drill you are talking about is extremely creative, and difficult. They don't look like cheerleaders.....with really cool whistles. I'm not saying this type of drill is bad, but seriously get with the times. Oh and walk off music is so cheesy
ok i just have to say,i agree with jjjewunit90 that they need to be scored separately. and this is my take on unitards: theyre just a fad and will go away in a couple years. they aren't in any way creative because everyone is conforming to it. And since when is shuffling around to your next form drill? newport will never switch to unitards because they believe that they dont need to conform to please the judges. all they have to do is keep working hard, and after all, everybody loves a classic.
they should add a new division....unitard drill. the style is completely different. i dont think you can even compare the two/ newport is known for being a traditional drill school and i dont think that should change.
YEAHHH love the beginning with the music and your moves..amazing!
i'm so glad to see that some teams are still doing the traditional drill...not the weird crap that everybody is doing with now like weird little dance moves and bodysuits..
Way to keep the Newport tradition alive with some extremely challenging precision marching. I'd love to see any other team try to do a perfect parallel 90 degree march with a gaping hole going through the middle of the lines - while doing arms. ( a la 1:18 )
what do you mean different skill level? 3A schools simply have a smaller school population. I don't think that means that 3A schools are necessarily less skilled. JMO.
But I think the judges were pretty spot on with who deserved which places. The top 3 routines were all very creative and were stepping out of the box. Maybe you guy should consider swiching it up a bit....
Love you girls you did amazing!!!!!!!!!!! I wish i could have been there :( you should have placed better but you completely held your own in 4a!!! love you all!! crazy crabs!!!!!!!!!
AMAZING! this routine has everything: sharpness, creativity, energy, I loved it. 4th place and superior is SO good, but you guys deserved so much more, this is a first place routine :)
Great job ladies on another superior drill! This was so creative, yet still had the classic Newport old-school style. I loved all the formation changes! I want to see more Newport drill videos from this year. Can you post them?

just because some teams have been switching to a different style along with unitards doesn't mean that all teams should.
Variety is the spice of life. Not all drill teams with unitards are better than teams with skirts. Other factors such as execution are also important.
Grace3123 2 years ago 9
im not saying unitard drill is any less difficult or creative than traditional dril. its different, which is why it should be in a different category

even though newport did really well..the three teams that placed in 3A all actually had higher scores than newport

that may be, but 3A is a different skill level than 4A.
