The comment below was talking bout white men cant "sing" the blues, not play. Even Muddy and others said that. White men cant "sing" them like a black man. Thats a fact like it or not. They can learn to play them but neva be able to "vocal" as Muddy wld say, like us. No matter how famous they are. I love Kim and other white harp players but fact is fact. Sit in a black church and you will see the different, where soul comes from. This is not directed at anyone, just saying. Peace!!!!
@standelman95 you are like 14, right? you are clueless, you are. don't talk about things you don't understand. you know, the best black bluesmen of the day would kick the shit out of you for saying only black people could play the blues. kim wilson is literally one of the best blues harp players in the world right now. learn your facts, bro
@BzBlade Dude I love ricci and what he does is extraordinary he has really carved out a direction that no one else has and I think it is really important but it ain't blues in the real sense like kim, Kim has reinvented blues he is a true living mater of BLUES. HE puts everyone to shame. ANd there are so many great harp players.
@BzBlade Dude I love ricci and what he does is extraordinary he has really carved out a direction that no one else has and I think it is really important but it ain't blues in the real sense like kim, Kim has reinvented blues he is a true living master of BLUES. HE puts everyone to shame. ANd there are so many great harp players.
Got to meet him after the show last year at the Mount Wachusett Blues Festival in Massachusets . Great performer and a really nice down to Earth kind of guy . Hope they come back this year as well
I saw the T-birds tons of time from originals group and after hearing Kim on my 30th birthday I told him I stopped playing after I began listening to him. He kissed me on the cheek (Jimmy got the other one) and said: "Baby, don't ever stop!" Words from the master!
get hold of "whats the word" and "girls go wild" 1st and 2nd fabulous t-birds, recorded- '79 and '80. Two best albums IMHO. The stuff they played later in the 80s was great but a bit too commercial for liking-I did see twice in concert during "tuff enough" period. Only because they did a world tour with Stevie Ray Vaughn and came to Australia. I tell ya seeing 2 Vaughn brothers simultaneously playing Dick Dales's pipeline on a twinneck guitar was site to behold :) wilson is the ultimate showman.
I've been playing harp for a while myself, and listening to blues longer, over the years Kim Wilson has been a great inspiration, IMHO he is one of the true all time greats.
John Popper don't do it for me. I'd say Wilson any day over him - too good, too many notes all becomes monotonous. If wilson has a fault its that he plays too much on occasion.10 minute harp solos aern't cool.A really good player for me is the one who knows when not to play-just accents between the words. I like old blues, not modern harp gymnastic music. I like thewhole shebang - for me the harp is part of the story. drinking rum by the way:)
The only Kim Wilson album I ever owned was Tigerman. I based my whole opinion on that album. After reading about how much people love his playing, I did some searching on youtube. I was able to find some videos where his playing is impressive. I like his use of what sounds like a trill but is likely a tongue flutter. He does play a lot better than what is on tigerman. So I was wrong. Kim Wilson is not the crappy player I thought he was. Nothing off the wall awesome, but impressive none the less
Kim, how on earth do you play so badly after so many years? Please stop trying to play harmonica. God your stuff is so tired. You just noodle along with the crappiest excuse for harmonica playing I have ever heard on a recording.
I was just speaking jobless mind. Oedipal living arrangements affecting my ability to judge music aside, I still can't help but cringe in despair with every uninspired and laborious note that Kim Wilson plays. I once bought an album of his on the advice from a fellow musician. After carefully considering its merits, I opted to file it in a landfill. His singing is really good. His playing is horrific.
hey everyone has an opinion. What i want to know is your criteria for "good" harp? to my ears this cat has the chops and has the credentials-goes way back to the early 70s. I always been a big fan of his plus many other "legends'.I have had albums of wilsons since 1980-hes the real deal in my book. what don't you like about his playing-reminds me of Big and little Walters with plenty of sonny boy thrown in-hes an allrounder who has developed a kim wilson style that plenty of other now copy??
What is my criteria for "good" harp? "Good" harp is the music that stirs you on some level. It makes you close your eyes or stare off, and sit in silent amazement. Not too many players have this effect on me. Big Walter Horton, William Clarke, Sonny Terry, Little Walter, George "Harmonica" Smith, Paul Butterfield, John Popper to name a few. You can't explain it, you just experience it. I apologize for being an ass. A sixer of suds and a keyboard don't mix.
Thanks to the person/people who supplied this great video. I love these guys, love this music. As Kid Ramos once said: "It's not retro - it's unfinished business".
