Santana is not big on effects and pedals! Most of his tone comes from his fingers, the amp and guitar. The few effects he does use are only used in certain niches. Like chorus and delay. He has been known to use a Tube Screamer from time to time. Mesa Boogie Mark I is what he used for decades. Boogie Mark IV, Mark Vs and Lone Stars do a fine Santana. But you gotta have touch too man! Touch and phrasing is what Santana is about! Also Dumble Overdrive special!

Also worth mentioning is that more than likely Carlos had a treble bleed mod in the circuit of his guitar so that his neck pickup can cut through the way it does in Europa. As the guitar's volume is turned down, the sound gets brighter,

Early Santana was on Gibsons which I love! First the SG w P90s then the Les Paul. But in 74 he was playing the Gibson L6S. That thing was a coil tapper! Who knows what kind of wiring was in that thing?

By the time Europa came around he had switched to the Yamaha. He didn't like the pickups, so he installed his old Les Paul pickups in the Yamaha. Who knows how he had that thing wired? It could have very well had a treble bleed, It was a one of a kind custom.

Not that I'm aware of. Santana uses his volume knob on his guitar mostly. Although some whah pedals are also capable of being switched to a volume pedal mode. I know he has a whah, but I'm not aware of him ever using it as a volume pedal.
