I read THE ART OF THE DEAL and I think that in the late 1980's, he stopped taking his own advice. He borrowed to much money in unsecured loans with personal guarantees.
His later book, HOW TO GET RICH, was ridiculous. He won't say how he got out of his troubles in the 1990's, though it's publicly known (and rather humbling).
I didn't see that book in the store, but I'll have a look.
I checked online; he got rid of some of the debt by taking the casinos public and giving the bondholders the option of converting their bonds into shares. In a way it was like giving a portion of the house to the mortgage holder.

very good point.. Trump never states that he inherited something like 300 million.. or more.. of prime New York land...What he inherited would go up to a billion pretty easy even with bad moves.. I am not saying he is stupid.. just not as good as he is shown to be.

it is an important comment to how things work in this country if it is true.
personally i think it is all about the colour green, not black, not white. At least that is how it works in the supermarket.
but being trusted by the bankers is another street.
It certainly is about daddy, adress, education, and maybe also about other colours than green.

the one thing he got from his father was information, on how to become a billionaire, he's father gave his the tools to succeed, nothing else. Donald's dream was to break out of the image of "Fred's Son", and then Fred was known as "Donald's Dad" :), he will always be in top. if you havent been to his golf course in Briarcliff Manner, you must go, its amazing

Donald's inheritance wasn't the key to his success. His first job was managing his father's apartment complexes in Cincinnati. He did a great job of getting it back on its feet, then selling it to another (but dumber) millionaire's son. One lesson we learn from THE ART OF THE DEAL is to NEVER let the salesman take you out to lunch.
Fred Trump made his fortune building low-cost homes. Donald's M.O. was to build glitzy, high-end stuff with bond financing.

I read THE ART OF THE DEAL and I think that in the late 1980's, he stopped taking his own advice. He borrowed to much money in unsecured loans with personal guarantees.
His later book, HOW TO GET RICH, was ridiculous. He won't say how he got out of his troubles in the 1990's, though it's publicly known (and rather humbling).

read "The Art Of The Comback", there he says exactly how he got out of $9B debt, basically by using negotiations, but i still recommend it.

I didn't see that book in the store, but I'll have a look.
I checked online; he got rid of some of the debt by taking the casinos public and giving the bondholders the option of converting their bonds into shares. In a way it was like giving a portion of the house to the mortgage holder.

I just love the Trump haters... The envy is so thick, it oozes from the letters. Personally, I have a better opinion of The Man. He is totally unfazed by others' opinions of him. Just observe his demeanor during what were some demeaning, condescending and extremely leading questions. He never lost his cool. He just played verbal Tennis with the interviewer. Trump may not be the most likeable person, but he sure knows how to fight back with Finnesse and gets better with time.

What's the big deal about the bankruptcy? It's not like everything he owned was taken away. It's just about numbers in the books, specifically Atlantic City. so what?
He was able to manage the risks of Atlantic City and other developments. And he was able to learn from them.

Having his own online university - and building great real estate over world. Er, what else you want? Don't think his dad did all this stuff. Ok he was from a rich family.
