  • Geo,

Thanks very much for your demonstration videos. You taught me how to properly shave that my Father should of showed me! ;)

  • On its way is one of these "Vintage Gillette Adjustable Slim Safety Razor H-1 1962" My Mom wouldn't give up the one My Dad used since he passed away, however I found the same basic one he used, and what I learned with. Now for blades???? feather? I have no idea where to start geo...

  • On average how often should I change the blade in my safety razor? It's stainless steel so doesn't rust up like old school blades but obviously it will blunt, I'm guessing about a month?

  • OMG SHAVING VIDEO

  • whats the key to growing a damn beard!!!

  • @mnardski6262 it just happens. im 21 and i finally getting a beard.i have it all over my neck, but for years non on my face...time can only tell...good luck hahahah

  • @imdshiznit You're like the opposite of me, I can grow a tash & goatee just fine, but sideburns or anything much really on the sides of my face & neck doesn't really take it's very spaced out and becomes fluffy after a certain amount of time.

  • @mnardski6262 Testosterone. Ironically too much of it can lead to hair loss lol.

  • I thought you shouldn't shave across cause it will cause ingrown hairs

  • third video of yours of the night...trying to teach my boy to shave properly...wife thinks if she just gets him the gillette fusion, that's all there is....poor thing, hasn't got a clue.

So you have become my shaving mentor, like it or not. thanks for the great vids...My Dat taught me to shave with this razor, now I gotta get one.

great vids, keep up the good work...shaving is a right of passage and needs to be done correctly, I'd have a ceremony if I could.

  • After shaving my entire life with cartridge razors, I recently switched to using a Gillette Fatboy also, and I must say I get a much, much closer shave. Using cartridges, I almost always had irritation, especially on my neck, but with a safety razor, I almost never have any.

So to anyone out there thinking about using safety razors, my advice is to give them a try. I think you'll be delightfully surprised at the results, not to mention the much reduced cost for blades.

  • Hey love your videos and love the site... great selection of razors blades soaps act. anyways, i'm glad you made a video of the older double edge. i inherited from my grandfather when he passed, a 1956 3rd quarter gillette red tip! i've been safety razor shaving for a couple of years now and this was a little gem for my collection. Thanks again for the vids and keeps em coming!!!

  • Safety razors aren't just for men! I use a 1963 I-1 Ladies Blue Starburst safety razor I got off ebay. honeybeesoaps . net sells some great shaving soaps for men and woman in all kinds of yummy scents. I've heard some men using the starburst. Would you ever think of using a lady's razor? lol

  • @SapPhiReSparKleS14

    Lol!

I probably would not purchase a Ladies razor for myself, but if you want to send it to me, I'll shave with it! :)

  • Men! You made me discover a new huge amazing world. And I can assure that I have a lot to shave! Thank you very much!

  • Can you explain the adjustment part in more detail?

  • This video was really helpful, thanks. My dad didn't teach me how to shave.

  • what does fatboy and super speed mean???

  • huh, looks like three ppl were women looking for leg shaving tips..

  • Awesome video man, going to try and make the transition soon. Here's to hoping I don't slit my throat trying.

  • Nice CRUNCH with that FatBoy, another awesome vid G!

  • you make it look so easy. :(

  • Hey great tutorial I just got a 1956 Red Tip for Christmas, and I'm gonna have my first shave with it soon!

  • Hi Geo, I just bought a '59 Fatboy E3. My sampler pack should be arriving shortly. Included are Feather, Gillette 7 O'clock super platinum & super stainless, astra platinum, shark super chrome, and Blue Bird. What are some that a beginner to DE might like and which ones do you prefer? Chrome seems like they would rust if they're left wet too long, but otherwise how do the shaves compare b/w platinum coated, stainless steel, and chrome? thanks!!!!

  • @StraightShavingCat

    Hi SSC!

Like Real Estate, they aren't making any more of them! Hope so.

I'd have a hard tome parting with mine though....

My cold, dead fingers, or something like that, right!

    Geo.

  • just got one and its my first safety razor

  • @nubex101

    Great place to start!

You've tried the best, now try the rest!!! :) LOL!

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy For my first safety razor i got a Edwin Jagger DE89. I have gillette fusion and oh my goodness it makes my face breakout. I am sick and tired of these cartridge blades which tugs or pulls my hair. I am so excited. P.S. is it weird that i am watching all your vids of you shaving? I find it really fun and interesting and manly (?) hahaha anyways great vids man

  • great video .

  • @planes100

    Thanks Boss!

    G.

  • hi Geo how do you know what date they were made again? My Freand bought two for $10

  • @pteJames

    Late 1950's to early 1960's.

Check out the date codes on the blade compartment.

Let me know what they are. I can tell you when they were manufactured.

    Geo.

  • Nice instructional. I just got one today with a date code of D4. I paid $1.00 for it at a yard sale and it looks to be in the same or pretty close to the condition to the one in the video.

  • @terriblet63

    A dollar for a Fatboy?

    Where was this yard sale?

And why don't they have any like that around where I live? :)

    G.

  • Just one question, even though I've found my own way of dealing with it, how does one shave safely when they have a large or protruding Adam's Apple? Some people can have real troubles and cut themselves. Me personally, I have to swallow and hold it just for a second while I sweep the blade over the area, then release the swallow. I'm sure any inexperienced or young shavers would love your information. Thanks.

  • @DrFuckingPepper

Check out my Blog page as I cover shaving the Adam's Apple and under the nose in more depth than the room allowed here.

    Thanks,

    Geo.

  • You have a very shiny fatboy! It looks really nice. Is that a replate job or just a lot of elbow grease and polish?

  • @Jonodude0

That's the condition it was in when I purchased it years ago...

I maintain them and keep em' looking and working good.

Take care of your tools and they'll, take care of you!

    Geo.

  • I'm interested in purchasing a fatboy. Can you let me know where I could purchase one and what a fair price would be?

  • @haystephen

Visit local estate sales, garage sales and the like.

Check out the online shaving forums and also Ebay.

Do some comparison shopping on Ebay and you'll see how much they go for and see if it's within your budget range.

You should be able to pick one up in pretty good shape for under $100

    Geo.

  • @haystephen I just bought my first Fatboy (which also happens to be my first DE), and I found them to be selling for around $40-45 on eBay, in very good condition. Hope you find a good one!

  • I'm a recent convert to wet shaving and have learned alot from your vids. You seem to know your stuff so I would like your advice. I bought a Merkur 180 long handle double edge safety razor and I love it, however I've read a few comments that suggest upgrading to an adjustable safety razor. Do you get a better shave with the adjustables than you do with the non-adjustables? If so, which is the better razor in your opinion between the Gillette Fatboy or the Merkur Futur? Gr8 vids, tks for upload

  • @joneslt

It's always nice to have an adjustable razor because it lets you dial up or down the aggressiveness of your shave.

I'm partial to the Fatboy cause I've had one forever....

The Futur is a much more high tech design and features a snap on blade keeper.

I've always liked razors with butterfly or silo doors for their loading simplicity.

Both will get you where you want to be.....

The choice in the end is up to you.

Make it easy on yourself..... get them both!

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy Yes I agree I prefer the butterfly doors over the Futur design that requires removing the top. I gave the straight razor the good college try for a few months, but I find that it's an art that is above my skillset so I will stick with the safety razors for a while. Getting them both is a great idea, thanks :)

  • @joneslt

You gotta do what's good for you. If you prefer the Safety over the Straight Razor, then stick with it.

    Geo.

  • Kudos for using an old school razor !! I've been switching on razors since I figured that fewer blades would translate to less irritation (acne problems), without care to what gillette or who ever says.I had the gillette fusion then tried the mach 3 and currently trying out an old twin blade sensor. However I've never used one like this, mainly because a lot of people told me that a single blade would actually be more irritating, in your experience is that true ?? Thanks, cheers from Egypt :)

  • @spikehmd

    Thanks!

If you think of it from a common sense standpoint, the fewer sharp blades coming in contact with your skin, (especially if acne is involved) the better.

So Yes, a Safety razor with a DE blade will help you as it has helped many others.

    Geo.

  • i like your video... one point u dont make is not to use TOO MUCH LATHER.. u have too much lather on your face... LATHER DOES NOTHING! ..it gets in the way of your skin and the razor. making it harder to shave....

  • @AngeloR674

The amount of lather used is a personal preference...

Some is absolutely necessary, and too much is overkill.

I don't recommend shaving without it.

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy hi...... thanks for posting your videos.. very informational.. i like them.. was just saying lather does nothing for a good shave if u look at some high end creams jack black beard lube, billy jelousy hydroplane... they are all no lather creams.. for a reason.. also anthony shave cream.. low lather cream..all becuase of what i just said.... a beard needs to be as lubricated as possible... people think more lather is then better. NOT SO just gets in the way of your skin and the razor

  • @AngeloR674

    Thanks Angelo.

    I agree.

Enough cream so that all the ares you intend to shave are covered is sufficient.

    More than that is overkill.

    G.

  • @AngeloR674 It's not entirely true that lather serves no purpose. A good, stout lather will suspend the whiskers and hold them in a more upright position so that they can be cut more effectively. I do agree with you, however, that you can have too much of a good thing. Like Geo says, everyone has to experiment and determine what works best for him. (That's a big part of the fun and satisfaction of wet shaving--it's a highly personalized, customized skill to develop.) Cheers!

  • @IUJ420

    Thanks Angelo! Good post!

  • Respond to this video... thanks for your videos.. i actually learned something my self watching your brush technique under the nose.... nice technique

  • Geo,

Thank you very much for this great, detailed information.

My grandfather, with whom I was close, passed recently. Grandma put out a bunch of his things--items from his desk, his golf bag, etc.-- for his grandkids to choose a memento. I noticed a couple of solid-looking metal-bodied razors. I'd never seen an old school safety razor before. But the way the "barn doors" open and the heft of the thing made me choose it. Now I can use it and feel close to Grandpa every day. Thank you!

  • @SWABManutius

    Very Nice!

You're fortunate to have a nice memento that you can actually use every day, instead of something that sits in a drawer or on a shelf!

    Enjoy!

Gramps is probably checking out your technique....

    Geo.

  • Ive been considering lately switching to a safety razor due to less cost in blades and improved control and shave quality. Ive noticed that these Gillette fatboys go in between $40 to $100 depending on condition. My question to you is would you recommend this safety razor or something a bit more modern like a Merkur Futur? Im not necessarily collecting vintage razors, I just want quality and Ive noticed that the fatboy just seems like a popular choice.

  • @drunkinmaster1

If you can get yourself a nice Fatboy I highly recommend it.

In my opinion, one of the best razors ever made.

Gillette Jumped the Shark when they stopped making those razors.

You can always switch to the Futur after you feel comfortable with the Fatboy.

    Geo.

  • I prefer my '47 Aristocrat. I've been a mug and brush man for most of my life, but it is only the last year that I've started shaving with a DE. The GF thought I was crazy when I bought about a dozen different vintage razors off of eBay in the quest for the right razor. The Aristocrat is my favorite, with my ball-end Tech a close second. She decided I was not totally crazy when I showed her the hard-cased Khaki Set I scored. That was when she got that this is living history.

  • I'm in my young teenage year - 16 to be exact, soon to be 17! I never had much hair on my face just as my dad calls it "fuzz" or even sometimes "dirt"! But I really want to start shaving because my school mates keep telling me I would look better, but I don't know what DE razor to start with because I have really sensitive skin and don't want to end up cutting myself! I know all the components to a good shave so should I go for the jump and what should I get? Thanks in advance, love your videos!

  • @rumenthebest

    Hah!

My Dad used to give me the same type comments when I first inquired about shaving!

2 good starter razors for you: the Edwin Jagger DE89 and the Merkur HD.

    Excellent everyday non-adjustable razors.

Thanks for the props on the vids!

    Geo.

  • @rumenthebest Badger and Blade is a great shaving community, and you can answers to questions you don't even have yet there. West Coast Shaving and Classic Shaving are good stores. Spend some time on B&B figuring things out, and then start hunting on eBay for a vintage razor. BTW - I'd start by getting a mug or bowl, brush, and good shaving soap, and working on lather first. Good lather is a key part of a good shave, and can be the most sensual part of the ritual.

  • @rumenthebest What Geofatboy said. I recently started using a Fat Boy as my first Safety Razor, moving up from that chemical gel and five blade crap. I would highly recommend ebaying a Gillette Superspeed or Fat Boy, personally. My Fat Boy belonged to my now-deceased Grandfather, and it does an excellent shave. Feels much better than the "Fusion" I was using. A Fat Boy on 8 or 9 should be great for sensitive skin. Try a 5 if you get the fat boy, it's a nice in-between close and not-close.

  • Thank you! Having just purchased this same razor off ebay, I've found this demo very informative. I've much closer shaves now because of it.

  • @HobbsBhipp

With Great Razors comes Great Shaving Results!

    Geo.

  • i own a fat boy h2 it is im gonna get it revamped be for i use it

  • @ladyslovethisman

    Cool,

Let me know how it works out when you finally shave with it....

Send a pic with the new finish....

    Rhodium is awesome!

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy will do

  • 3 people don't own a Fatboy.

  • @calemstevens33

    Lol!

You got me smiling on that one!

    Thanks,

    Geo.

  • Geo my man I'm liking your store it's growing by the day . Your prices are fair aswell. Now I just gotta figure out what to get . I hope your doing well pal

  • @MrBawston

    Thanks Mr. B!

All is good on my end...

Hope all is well in Bean town....

Obsessed with same day shipping and you will get your order fast....

Have a Great Shave, Have a Great Day!

    Geo.

  • Hey geo. About a month ago I asked for some tips on de shaving. I had my first shave today and it was fantastic! Consider me a convert.

  • @bigjohnnygee123

    Alright Big John!

As Freddy Mercury would say: "Another One Bites the Dust!"

Feel free to run your left over multi-blade cartridges and razors with the vehicle of your choice!

    Take care,

    Geo.

  • @alohakaiolu

Believe it or not, I have a not so good shaving experience occasionally...

It happens to the best of 'em!

That's why they make alum, balms, styptic pencils, and nick sealer.

Take your time and follow the techniques, you'll be fine.

Old Skool is Cool, You Know it!

    Geo.

  • My hat is off to you geofatboy,

Just came across your videos and even though people may think that a man shaving is a simple thing. It happans to be the most personal thing a man will do. Your videos are important to teach young men about a variety of different tools and methods to shave who had no father in their life to show them how. Using a classic razor and shaving brush is style shaving and a lost art. This is the only way to go. Thanks for taking all that time to make the videos.

  • @MrWaRmouth

You Sir, get my vote for one of the best comments I have ever received.

(that's between 4 and 5 thousand comments this past year)

I could not have said it better myself and I greatly appreciate you taking the time to write it.

I'll keep doing what I do and hope Gents young and old can improve upon their shaves as a result.

Best regards and hats off to you my friend!

    Geo.

  • @Geo

alot of time i cut my self on the second pass what could i be doing wrong?

and Whom makes the best blade, i hear alot talk about the Feather from Japan

  • @MixedMotives

Make sure you hydrate and lather up, then watch your blade angle....

You may be going with too much of an angle and irritating your skin.

30 degrees is the proper angle.

    Geo

  • I just bought a "Fatboy" at an estate sale today... How do I know what number to adjust it to? (1-9)

  • @calemstevens33

If you are a newcomer to Safety Razor shaving, start with a low setting of 1 -2-3 , and see how that works out for you.

I usually start with a 7, but you need to work your way up to that.

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy Got it. Thanks for the replay and for all the helpful videos!

  • @calemstevens33

    My pleasure,

    Take care.

    G.

  • 3 passes!! Holy crap! Doesn't that irritate your skin? Sometimes my skin gets irritated and I just use 1 pass.

  • @pipetech26

3 Passes is the fastest way to a BSS / Baby Smooth Shave.

    No problems when performed correctly.

    Geo.

  • What do you think about having one plated? in Rhodium

and do you know of anyone that does it

  • @MixedMotives

    I think it's a great idea!

Better than gold or silver, as long as it's within your price range.

Maintaining it will be much easier after it's re-plated.

I'll send a link to your in box for a replating service!

    Geo.

  • how long do the blades last?

  • @boondockjosh

Usually about 4-6 shaves from a good new blade.

    Geo.

  • I just got into DE shaving and purchased an F3 Fatboy two weeks ago. Watching your videos has been very, very helpful. You are my shave guru! Check out my shaving vid using the 1960 Fatboy and an old Gillette from 1918. The 1918 is a bit more aggressive, but still a darn good razor. They sure knew how to make them back them. Thanks for all your great videos.

  • @SinatraLennon

2 very nice razors you have there...

Agreed, they definitely don't make them like that any more.

Check out my video on "Old Skool" razors to see some more like those.

Thanks for the Props on the vidz and I'll check yours out as well.

    Geo.

  • @geo its E 2

  • @MixedMotives

Your Gillette Fatboy with an E2 Date Code was manufactured in April/May/June of 1959.

Just 3 months before mine. :)

    Nice Razor!

    Geo.

  • Hey Geo,

i was looking into purchasing a FatBoy, and wanted to get it replated in the original material, do you know if it is nickel or stainless?

    thanks.

  • @wogslife2easy

    Most likely Nickel Plated.

You can actually have it replated with Nickel, Silver, Gold, or Rhodium...

The sky's the limit, and so is the price! LOL! :)

    Geo.

  • Comment removed

  • @geofatboy Thanks, i was successfull in the purchase of the fatboy its a 1959 E 3 Date code got it off ebay for $30AUD from the USA, i was wondering from your point of view, if it would need replating or just a clean or a polish, would you mind if i inboxed you the link for you to look at. thanks for the reply.

  • @wogslife2easy

Send over your pic links and I'll check it out.

    No problem.

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy Pic links sent, thanks :)

  • @wogslife2easy

It looks pretty good! Not a bad price either.

I see a few light water spots on the outside of the butterfly doors.

No picture of the inside of the blade compartment, but if that's OK then you did OK with it.

If it opens & closes smoothly and you get a solid click when it lands on the number settings, then it works well.

The paint has worn off of the numbers themselves.

Try some silver polish and fine steel wool very gently on the spots...

    Geo.

  • @wogslife2easy

I clicked on that link and nothing came through.....

I would clean, disinfect, and polish it up and see how nice you can get it to look.

If you are satisfied with the results, then leave it at that.

If not then look into having it refinished.

    Geo.

  • Dear Geofatboy, how do you take care of your DE razors? Do you just give them a rinse and a couple of shakes after the shave and let them air-dry, or something else? Thanks. Nice video, as always.

  • @egarrulo

I disassemble it, remove the blade and dry it with a towel.

Then just let it dry in the open air.

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy Therefore you put away your DE razors without any blade in, don't you? Thanks.

  • @egarrulo

    Yes that's correct.

    G.

  • @geofatboy That means you don't reuse your blades, do you? I think it would be troublesome having to store them away while taking care their edges do not get bruised in the process, wouldn't it? Thanks for your patience.

  • @egarrulo

Sure I reuse the blade, between 4 and 6 times usually.

I place the blade inside the medicine cabinet where it is out of harms way.

I remove it, but that's just me....

I'm sure many Gents just leave the blade in the razor.

Just a matter of personal preference...

    G.

  • i just bought a fatboy from ebay how do i know what year it was made?

  • @MixedMotives

Tell me the date code (on the blade compartment where it says made in USA, it will be a capitol letter and a number 1-4 ...) Then I will tell you when it was made.

    Thanks,

    Geo.

  • I love my Fatboy mine is a 1962 it works great i started with a Merkur Hd and i haven't used it since i got the Fatboy in. Great videos your the reason i got into wet shaving and i have had the best shaves in years!!

  • @mogget14

    You own two great razors!

Whichever one you choose to shave with will definitely get the job done in short order!

Thanks for the Props on the videos!!!

    Geo.

  • Hey Geo - just wanted to thank you for putting up these videos. I started shaving with safety razors four years ago and have had the hardest time... until I finally saw your videos. All your tips work great and, for the first time in four years, I gave myself the perfect shave! You saved my face. Thank you!

  • @5thwall

Thanks very much for the great comment!

I'm quite pleased you were able to "Save Face!"

Now you can look forward to your shaves instead of it being a dreaded daily ritual.

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy Exactly! It's nice not to be in pain after shaving. :D

  • @5thwall

    Short, and to the point!

    Thanks,

    G.

  • @geofatboy What are you currently using for you shaving cream? I tried some Col Conk glycerin this morning. It was ok, but seemed to dry my face out a bit.

  • @5thwall

I rotate between Taylor, Trumper, and Proraso, and Edwin Jagger Shaving Creams.

    All are excellent!

I'm kind of partial to sandalwood!

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy thx! i'll give them a try. do you mix them with anything? also, do you use an alum block after every shave or just when you get a nick?

  • @5thwall

I don't reach for alum after every shave...

If I feel that my shave is BSS and nick free, I'll go right for the after shave balm.

Proraso alcohol free or Trumper's skin Food are among my favorites.

    Geo.

  • WHAT ARE THE SETTINGS FOR? AND HOW ARE THEY USED? THANKS .. I HAVE A GILLETTE DOUBLE RAZOR... THE BAD THING IS I ALMOST CUTT OFF MY LIP ...I THINK IT'S BECAUSE, ON THE SAFFTY BAR , IT'S BENT SLIGHTLY I JUST NOTICED IT...

  • @Onbloods13

The settings reveal more of the blade as the numbers increase, giving you a more aggressive shave.

If your razor is damaged and cutting you as a result, you should have it repaired or get a new one....

    G.

  • Shaved with the fatboy for the first time today after spending quite a lot of time cleaning and polishing (looks great now!) I was quite amazed how much better of a shave I got over the Merkur classic I had been using before. Very impressed with it so far and it's a rather exciting feeling to have an antique in the collection!

  • @Jonodude0

It's really nice to own a piece of history and as far as I know, they aren't making any more of them!

    Enjoy it!

    Geo.

  • You've truly inspired me, I'm ready to ditch the 5 cartridge razors and start with the Fatboy. Only problem is, is that I am a head shaver as well. What do you recommend for a head shave?

  • @crazy4mydolphins

    Thanks!

You can definitely shave your face and your head with a Safety Razor.

The Fatboy is no longer made so you may have a bit of trouble finding one...

Check out my site ShaveNationdotcom for quality wet-shaving supplies.

I'll send a couple of links to your inbox regarding excellent modern day safety razors.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Geo.

  • how many shaves does the blade last (presuming I go for a 3 pass shave) ?

and this is a good video sir:)

  • @heyitsme404

In general, between 4 and 6 shaves.

    Thank You!.

    Geo

  • Were do u buy new 1959 blade replacements?

  • @MrCupcakes76

Any standard Double Edge Safety Razor blade will fit in this razor.

    Best,

    Geo.

  • Geo, I could not figure out if your nickname was a reference to the Gillette Razor, or the Harley Davidson Motorcycle( maybe both). You look like a rider.

  • @SD9Driver RIGHT ON BOTH COUNTS!!! I've been riding motorcycles since I was in 8th grade.... Graduation present was a Honda CT-70 I guess I've owned about 20 total. My first Harley was a Fatboy and I have owned about 14 HD's since then and a couple of one-off custom choppers. My first Safety Razor was a 1959 Gillette Fatboy, and as you can see, I've accumulated a few more since then....LOL! Obsessive, definitely! So, yes, The nickname covers two of my favorite hobbies! Take care, Geo.
  • @bsmyn0708

Not enough room to answer all those items here, ....to find the answers which you seek:

Do an on line search of Gillette Safety Razor Date codes and you will find quite a few sources that will explain everything about Safety Razor Codes, Years, quarters, etc.

    Best,

    Geo.

  • Scored a 1959 fatboy for 20 bucks! Very exciting feeling. Just needs a bit of cleaning and polishing

  • @Jonodude0

    Nice purchase!

Lets hear how it works for you after the overhaul...

  • hey geo hope you're well. Have you always used safety razors? If not how did you get into it and what was your first razor? cass uk

  • @Cass1875

I used to "borrow" my Dad's Safety Razors when I was younger...

The first razor I ever bought for myself was a 1959 Fatboy Model....

That, and the HD Fatboy is where my name came from...

I used to own one of those as well!

    Take care,

    Geo.

  • Hey Geo, are safety razors rather dangerous to use? I'm just worried about cutting myself unexpectedly.

Though, I do tend to be a very careful shaver and never apply anymore pressure then needed.

  • @jaketubedeja

Many things are dangerous if they are used for something other than their intended use or if they are used improperly...

It's called a Safety Razor because it features a safety bar that only reveals a very small portion of the blade...

If you are careful and use a light touch , you should be fine!

That being said, a slight nick or two may be part of the learning curve.

    Best,

    Geo.

  • Excellent Video Geo !!! More and more, the older I get, the more old school I want to become. How did the Fat Boy fair with today's adjustable's out there ? Thanks so much for your time !

  • @Johnnyboy792

    Hi Johnny!

Let me just put it this way:

The Fatboy is the pinnacle that other companies are trying to reach up to!

In my opinion, no one has duplicated it yet...

It's unfortunate that Gillette ever stopped making them!

If you have the opportunity to pick one up, I highly advise it...

    Just don't pay too much!

    Geo.

  • Thanks Buddy !!!

  • @Johnnyboy792

    No worries Johnny!

    Geo.

  • I got one today on Ebay Buddy. I paid $60.00 I know you said don't pay a lot for it but it's mint condition and I just had to have it. BTW, what's your favorite of all the shave creams you use ? Thanks again & Have a wonderful Memorial Day... hot dogs are calling !!!

  • @Johnnyboy792

    Nah Johnny, you did good!

$60 is not a bad price at all for a Fatboy....

One of my faves is the Taylor Of Old Bond Street Sandalwood.

    Enjoy your doggies!

    I'm getting mine tomorrow....

    Geo.

  • @JohnCollins3

    Thanks so much John!

I love the "Rocket Science" reference, and It's true....

Most Gents, and Ladies as well, can learn how to wield a Safety or Straight Razor with a bit of practice.

Beyond that, it becomes second nature, or a "No Brainer".

I've actually shaved with my eyes closed just to see if I could do it!

    Enjoy your shaves!

    Geo.

  • Are you getting a closer shave than with the multi-blade cartridge razors that are always on tv? how does the 3 pass technique treat your skin? any irritation? I'm just interested to see how a safety razor compares with the cartridge razors. also, how often do you change out the blades on your safety razor?

  • @DannyMac100

    Definitely closer!

Check out my Blog for good info on Safety Razors!

    Geo.

  • great help lad!

  • @trillakilla

    Thanks Trilla!

    G.

  • can you hook me up with a link from where to buy my own fatboy

  • @perpetual0madness

No problem, just go on Ebay and enter Gillette Fatboy in the search line, you'll see a few on there.

    Don't pay too much now!

    Geo.

  • @geofatboy i found one for 60 bucks on this site called razor emporium, is it trsut worthy, because i had a bad experience with EBAY

  • @perpetual0madness

Sorry about your bad experience on the Ebay, but know sure there are many reputable on line sellers that can assist you.

  • Are you a barber? How many years did it take you to perfect shaving with a safety razor and straight razor?

  • @Devissee

I'm a hands on type guy who takes pride in doing things myself.

If I need to do something, I'll go on YT and check the process of how to do it...

If I don't find anything there, I'll look elsewhere or, just tackle the project anyway.

Then make a YT video of how it's done to help others.

IE: My Shaving, Motorcycle, Car, & Water Heater videos are all viewable on my channel.

I've been shaving for years, but still haven't "perfected" it yet!

Most can learn how in a couple of months

    Geo.

  • Jed,

That is a great question and I've taken a day to ponder it.....

I may take a beating for this from other wet-shaving fans who are huge fans of certain modern day razors...

To answer your question, honestly, I'm going to say that There is No Such Animal!

A Safety Razor with the same features: TTO Design, Adjustable Click Settings, Durability, Balance, and Engineering, is nowhere to be found! Sad, I agree!!!

Edwin Jagger DE89, Merkur HD, and Futur are about as good as it gets w/ modern rigs.

  • What is the best modern replacement/substitute for the gillet fatboy made today???

  • Hey geofatboy:

I just bought myself a safety razor (great vid by the way), the question I have is how long do safety razor blades last?

  • @tito8907

Go to my YT channel banner and click on the BLOG tab.

    Your answer is right there!

    Thanks,

    Geo.

  • I know a lot of people don't like them, but I love my shavette (it's not the dovo; it's the shaving shack one kinda like the parkers). I'm using the Proraso green tea and aloe soap, and it's GREAT! I Also, I just got an EJ medium best badger brush ^_^ I will never go back to multiple blade cartridges.

  • @luckybAdam

    Thanks for that !

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Whatever works for you is what you want to use, right?

    Geo

  • Hi Geo, went to my dads house to see if he still had his DE razor, sure enough, a '61 Fatboy! I am currently cleaning (nice green stuff on the handle) and getting supplies for my first shave. He had a bunch of Polsilver blades as well. Also had a AJ Jordan straight razor. Anyway, what is your choice of blade(s) when using your Fatboy?

    Cheers!

    -Tom

  • @modmlot

    1961 Fatboy, Nice find!!!

Cool that you got yourself a keepsake from your Pops!

I usually alternate between Astra and Feather blades.

I find them to be good and sharp and provide great shaves for me.

Let me know how the Fatboy shaves for you!

    Best,

    Geo.

  • I just got into this hobby a year ago. By far, the least expensive hobby one can have. I got into it because I got tired of being a slave to Gillette's never ending gimmicks to charge more and more per blade. This vintage razor hobby actually pays for itself. It is amazing how well built these made in America razors last. Built to last a lifeti
