The problem is that US might strike in FATA or NWFP, but the jihadis will gain support all over the Pakistatn. Only Jihadis would be beneficial in this, and it will destabilise the goverment and if things go bad maybe Pakistan would become Iraq i.e Pakistanis killing each other and eventually disintegrate.
Another thing US invasion would be unsuccessful, and US would be bogged down in these areas which is not good for anyone.
Defeating Taliban was not Paki objective, it was forced on them. Pakis created, aided, abetted Taliban after all and their main cadre are Pakis. A few military operations here and there in the tribal areas and the capture of few mid-level Al Qaeda members for handing over to Americans around the time of visits of US officials has been Paki strategy.
Even if NATO & US stays in Afghanistan for another 20 years, situation will be even worse, unless they solve the Paki problem, that is the key.
