In response to this fun discussion about NOS components and whether or not it's all just hype - forget it. We're living in a golden age of pedal making. There are more and better options out there than there ever have been tons of the options in front of us are fabulous. Stuff from the 70's was unreliable, inconsistent and super noisy.
This thing sounds great, it doesn't sound like some fake effect that sounds separated from the guitar signal, but rather blends flawless into the signal. One of the best to my ears, but everyone has their own opinion.
sounds like all analogman stuff a lot of hype over very average pedals.Lets face it all the good components are long gone,if you want good analog vintage is the only way dont be fooled by new old stock its lies..
@spredthefunk I think the same thing can be said about lots of vintage gear as well. Take for instance a vintage 1970's MXR Script Logo Phase 90..... $300.!!!! Why??!!! It's really nothing special. Dallas Arbiter Fuzz for over a thousand!!!!??? Come on! I say: to each his own. If people love Analogman and you think it's over-priced and all hype, oh well. And... if people want over-priced, low-quality pedals that just happen to be 30 years old... more power to them.
@vela75 Also, I think some people are forgetting that there are compromises and pitfalls with certain vintage pedals. That being said, whatever floats your boat, more power to you I say...
@GrowTheCaine hey mate this auto wah is ok,but ia vintage mu-tron 3 would wipe its arse, and any other envelope fiter that dares to challenge the KING.......
@spredthefunk well you can still buy parts that match the mu-tron and on top of that building it yourself allows you to tweak the parameters of the filter yourself it may not be the same thing but you might always be able to construct something WAY better given the right parts.
@GrowTheCaine you might get some of the parts, but you wont get most of them, using components that have the same value does in no way mean it will sound good. just check out the electro harmonix q tron one of the original designers of the mutron 3 as been involved in building it,and its ok but not in the same league as the mutron 3...
@spredthefunk It's not about the values - components of today can be far superior if you buy the right ones. Most can be had in more accurate and stable versions than in the past. For instance, with carbon comp resistors, it was the instability and drift under temperature changes that made "the tone" in some Fender amps. Unfortunately, that wasn't repeatable because the components in one amp wouldn't drift quite the same is the components in the next amp.
Definitely not, though some of his stuff doesn't thrill me. It's hit & miss, like Keeley, et al.
This particular chorus is amazing IF you want fat & creamy. If you prefer thin & cutting, then look elsewhere, or use two different pedals, which is always best.
As with most YouTooob vids, we are hearing this out of context. You can't judge a pedal until you hear it in the mix, whether live or recorded. This pedal sits REALLY well in a track.
@spredthefunk Where do you sprout this crap? "all the good components are long gone"? It's simply not true. Whether or not you like this brand is one thing, but you're just plain wrong. You can actually go on various sites and ebay and buy these components. The only argument you can make here is whether or not it makes a difference. Fact is, it doesn't have to.
@poneyboy23 hey mate putting a couple of so called new old stock nkt 275 transistors in a fuzz face clone does not mean it will sound like a original.some of these boutique pedal builders are taking the piss,i have never seen a clone of any pedal that sounds anywhere near the originals. I know you can still get some old components, but alot of them are fake and guess what the big companys know all about it...
@spredthefunk I don't disagree - using NOS components means nothing. But your blanket statement that "all the good components are gone" is just plain wrong. Original MN3007 chips can still be had for instance. NOS are easy to find. Does it make a better sounding pedal? Not necessarily. As to the "originality" of Analogmans sounds, that's up for debate. In fact, getting that "original" sound is a lot more than getting an authentic pedal. If I had an original fuzz face, I wouldn't sound original.
@poneyboy23 ok i know you can get the panasonic chips and other old parts your right, but resistors and caps make a massive difference.some of these pedal builders seem to think just coz they use the same values that are on the schematics that they will have a great pedal but thats so wrong.Im sick of reading things like this is a faithful reproduction, and it turns out to be total shit....
@spredthefunk But of all the ones who claim it, Analogman is most likely to be telling the truth. So to the concept of "fake NOS" parts that was mentioned, this thread is about Analogman. And I think their stuff meets claims better than most. There are so many things that go into making a "faithful" reproduction, there aren't enough words allowed here. Suffice it to say that NOS components can help IF that is one of the primary contributors to that original tone.
@stymye I have always been interested in the CS-550. I wish there were more videos online of it. From what I have heard, it sounds great. I used to have a Roland JC-120 and the chorus was awesome! Someone told me a long time ago that the maxon chorus is the closest you can get to that JC-120 sound.
@vela75 Having heard a JC120 and the maxon chorus i respectfully disagree. What does sound exactly like a JC120 is a vintage '70s Roland Chorus Ensemble-1 because Roland literally built the exactly chorus circuit from the JC120 into the pedal. Short of finding one of those, a vintage Boss CE-2 is not like the JC120's chorus but it is still very amazing in its own way. But i agree the JC120 is the holy grail of chorus. Short of something vintage, i agree this is the best chorus in production
I'm pretty sure the chorus for the JC-120 is the same circuit as a Boss CE-1, I've tried the ce-1 clones l, and owned a real one (far superior) , accept no substitutes!!!! And the vibrato is amazing : )
@stymye I disagree, i think the AnalogMan Chorus has a more musical quality - more tasteful and usable. The Maxon sounds more vintage 80's to my ears, kind of novelty chorus,.
@TheStaticCollective maybe for what you do the red witch is better, i have used the red witch at namm and it is completely not the same type of chorus as the analogman. the red witch is good for heavily swirling dark strange chorus, not really very usable and noisy with a poor bypass. the analogman has the most usable sound-enhancing tone, it is quiet and clear and musical with a perfect bypass. so the red witch does not have it beat, more knobs doesn't equal better or more versatile.
DOD FX60, not the FX65, the 60. The great thing about it is that it's subtle. You can't go overboard with it, which is nice, because there is nothing worse than too much chorus. No seasick! Subtle!
Small clone is fine if you get an older one. (Good luck, btw they're harder to find than Waldo.) This one rules all. It's a beautiful, chewy sounding chorus, and I have a super-picky ear. The only other with the same oomph to it is the Retro-Sonic CE-1 copy. A bit on the pricey side, though.
DO NOT BUY FROM T MIRANDA! These guys have had my chorus pedal in for repair for almost a year now. They keep making lame excuses for not getting it back to me. The last one was no boxes.
I even sent them more money a month ago. BUYER BEWARE
Well, the Analogman blows about every other chorus pedal out of the water, but....everyone has their own taste and opinions. Plus, cost is another consideration. The Small Clone is a good chorus, but from what I remember, it adds a lot of noise to your signal. I could be wrong. :)
have you ever tried tc electronics chorus? i saw that guthrie govan uses the analog man so i'm pleased with the sound i agree it's the best but you seem to have a bit of knowledge on chorus pedals so any opinions?
I've never tried the Tc, but from what I do know, the Tc would have more of a digital/clean/pristine sound, appose to the Analogman, which has more of a warm/analog/liquidy sound. I guess it's all a matter of what you prefer in your sound. I personally love the vintage analog sound of the Analogman chorus, but I'm a little biased. Hope this was helpful. I would also check out some reviews and videos online. Cheers!
No comparison! I would definitely get the Analogman Clone Chorus!!!! Another great analog chorus is the Maxon cs-550. You might want to check that pedal out too. It's awesome.
I really haven't heard the choralflange enough to make an informed judgement. I know that it is an awesome pedal. You might try looking around YouTube for some videos. You can check out Fulltone's website to listen to some sound bytes.
Yeah I thought that to. But then I bought one and now I don't think the Maxon CS-550 is awesome at all. It has a low mids boost which pushes your amp into distortion when the uneffected signal is not distorted. I find that is just plain annoying. Also the time control has one usefull setting on it so they may as well have designed it without that knob. The physical size is astoundingly big also.
i have been looking, and looking, and looking on youtube at dozens of chorus pedals,,,this is without a doubt the best sounding one i've come across!!!...
i think in order to show ala perfect the tone and capacity of a chorus pedal, it's better to play some songs with a slow and airy structure, for ex: metallica's sanitarium, meagadeth's foreclosure of a dream, radiohead stuff...
I love this pedal! I have the depth toggle version and have used it with strats, prs (two kinds), and LPs, through Marshall, Fender, solid state, and tubes, and in all combinations it's the best pedal out there. Analog Man's concept (according to their web site buried in the comments somewhere) was to take the discontinued good old vintage Clone and then improve it, make it more reliable and versatile, and put it in a roadworthy, true-bypass box. Mission accomplished! It's a beast.
Have you used a Digitech Whammy pedal's detune setting? Would you be able to compare the two pedals if so? I'm looking for something like that that can be kind of lush but also very subtle in modulation so it doesn't intrude on the notes actually being played
Great review! Should I get the Depth toogle switch? I think the chorus as shown here its perfect for clean guitars, but I plan to use it with distorted signals too. Whats your opinion?
I personally think it's perfect without it, but I guess if you opt to get it, it's only an extra $25.
As for using it with distortion, I use it constantly with my overdrive and I love the sound. It's very thick. I am going to have to do another video with an overdriven sound.
Hope this was helpful. I just can't say much about the depth switch. Sorry. All I can say is that the Analogman chorus is the best one out there!
I just e-mailed Mike yesterday about the depth switch and if he recommends it in which he does. Most of the customers really like the mix knob option as well but he said the depth switch alone should suffice. Im expecting overbearing sufficiency, it's a great pedal and Mike seems like a cool cat.
The stereo one would be great! I would have liked to have gotten that one, but for what I do, this pedal works! I did look into a ton of different choruses, but this one definitely takes the cake!!! I think it is THE best sounding chorus out there! Analogman is a great company to deal with also. I'd like to get the Peppermint Fuzz next. :)
That's funny. I haven't listed to Bread for years. It's cool how things just come out of you.
It was my first AnalogMan pedal. I highly recommend it. Such a great chorus pedal. I almost went with the Maxon CS-550. That's also a really awesome chorus pedal.
which chords are you playing in the third phase? the chorus really gives that charisma.. thnx nice vid..

I think it sounds best when you got all the knobs at 12 o'clock.

I do too. That's where I usually keep it.
