Folks, this isn't about unions and non-union companies. Prevailing wage was designed to stop tax payer money from funding companies doing public works with unskilled labor. The quality of work goes down, and much of the unskilled labor is brought in as undocumented and illegal workers who take their money home with them and spend it in their economy. Prevailing wage makes it so that it's too expensive to hire unskilled labor, so they hire local skilled tradesman to do a good job.
Those workers will spend their money in the local economy, where it multiplies its effects and gets taxed again through sales tax, and subsequent payroll and sales tax from the workers it helps employ through the ripple effect. Also, a higher quality job will purchased with taxpayer money as a result. Getting something cheaper doesn't mean you get a better deal, you know. I'm union, and I've been on prevailing wage jobs where we were the only union contractor there.
The only part that unions play in all of this is their payroll is what the prevailing wage is based upon. Why? Because it's a known consistent rate of pay. Non-union payroll is all over the place. I've worked with non-union companies that pay as well as union companies, and even treat their people great. I've also worked alongside of non-union and union companies that you couldn't force me to work for.
As a worker living in a "right to work" "common"wealth i have to inform all of you to oppose this at all costs! these laws are ripe with corruption and remove any power to the people to defend themselves when their rights are violated at work and their jobs are threatened for every false reason companies can come up with. If you want to lose your job right before you retire, if you want to have your hours cut without explanation, if you want to be fired at any time for no reason, vote yes.
When you forget History or Ignore it in Mitch Danials case you are doomed to repeat it! only We didn't have the third world economies to compete with back then. I have already heard nut Gingrich say high school kids should do janitorial work. What Next? These Guys get Fat off of the Tax payers and live in the Twilight Zone.
RoughAcres is 100 percent on the money. Kasich, Walker, Scott, Snyder and Daniels are all on the Koch bros gravy train/payroll. They do not represent tax paying constituents- they represent the robber barron corporate elites.
@mitchgunthorpe007 one would think that the koch brothers sleep under your beds at night or something. they may have a lot of money but they dont control the entire country. mitch daniels got our state out of debt....debt racked up by union backed democrats!! maybe you still need to sleep with a light on at night so the booger man doesn't get you!!
@usaf317 Since you've clearly never had a labor intensive exploitative job, why don't you ask your grandparents what they are like. No healthcare, min wage, and if you're hurt they let you go. That's what you're setting up for your children and grandchildren. That means their standards of living will be lower than we've known. You're just ignorant and don't know how profound this is, and what's at stake.
@Fuchender well mr know it all, i have worked in a factory and i held elected office within the union. i understand how bad things were in the past and the LAWS we have now to help protect workers. i work for myself now because i could see no future in a union shop....there is no reward for hard work in a union shop...it is all based on who was employed first. so now i am working for myself and the harder i work the more money i make...i will leave a business for my family.
@ruelsmith i agree, unskilled labor has little to bargin with other then solidarity. in a trade union if you dont know your job you are not working but thats not the case in a factory.
@Fuchender i will leave a very profitable business behind for my family. my kids understand that if you get an education and develop good work habits you will succeed in life. my grandchildren will not have to rely on a union ...or wait for the government or some socialist community organizer to provide them their sustenance....they will be able to stand on their own two feet. and if you have a job that you feel is exploitative then quit! thats what i did...now i am in charge of my destiny.
"I have said, over and over... I'm a supporter of the labor laws we have in the state of Indiana, I'm not interested in changing any of them, not the prevalent wage laws, certainly not a right to work law." - Indiana's (R) Mitch Daniels, 9/3/2006, in a speech to the Teamsters Union
Once elected, he changed his tune.
That's the same tune Wisconsin's (R) Scott Walker, Ohio's (R) John Kasich, and Florida's (R) Rick Scott are all singing. (Or trying to.)
@RoughAcres people should have the choice to join a union or not. i was a union member for 4 years. i dont think people should be forced to join a union.

BFD! I don't care if he changed his mind. Right to work is the right thing to do.
btw, mitchgunthorpe007: The Koch brothers pay a HUGE amount of taxes. More in one year than most of us will pay in our entire lives.

Trade unions are a world apart from shop unions. Seniority means nothing in trade unions.
