couldn't you have mounted the range finder/sensor on a servo? instead of the whole car turning right left continuously, you just turn the servo like a radar.
@grimtango5280 That is a good point and I have done this before with real good results. Also instead of a Infared sensor, which does not work well in sunlight an ultrasonic sensor could be used.
