I don't think it's so much that parallel fifths are a "bad thing" as much as it is if you are writing counterpoint, and have two distinct melodies working against each other, parallel fifths or parallel octaves will degrade the uniqueness of each line.
We had a saying in our Theory class.... Every time you write a parallel fifth Sculthorpe writes another piece...
Another version is every time you write a parallel fifth a kitten dies.

I am more concerned with the combination of Cuervo and Southern Comfort than I am with the sequential parallel fifths.

if you listen to any metal music, its all parallel fifths and octaves the entire time lol
i just dont get how there so "bad" i mean my profs can pick them out like nothing else and i cant tell the difference!!
