  • mmmmmm.... a lot of off pitches and her high notes seems squeezed. i think she should sing songs that have lower notes. i mean no e flat?????? but i like her voice..

  • Netrebko is living proof that ample T&A will get you places, even in opera. Why oh why doesn't she stay out of a repertoire that she has proven over and over again to be incapable of singing?

  • I love Anna I am a huge fan of hers but I'm sorry Sumi Jo does it better

  • @presfunk2028 sorry ti intrude but cant help a comment - plenty of them do it better, in fact plenty of them can actually sing it properly (starting with Moffo, Sutherland, Huang,... apologies to all i missed ), but some of them do it worse then Netrebko, one of them (whit wrong tunes and no idea at all) it's Sumy Jo

  • a very elegant performance - she is extremely musical, but that can't compensate for the lack of notes or right pitch - it sounds like transcribed down - why would she ever accept to sing Lucia, or even think about being able to do it? we may never know... maybe Anna Russell was right, "singers have a resonance box where their ..."

what is more strange, quite bizarre, is that can have it in the Met ... has singing gone into "j.n.d. area"? or is it only so for the Met (taste) and mass media??

  • @branko1b Music is not technical requirements...it's about soul ! and Anna has a lot of soul inside.......Anna here gave an excellent performance !

  • @Stelios i only argue with people who mention another singers under vid's i like, or say sm'thing bad uninvited - i've done this here, sorry -but i tried..., and was not, entirely negative

    not sure what you mean

1 if the soul is all that matters, you or i can do it, or B Streisand ... most people, with soul, don't do, in public, things they are not good at

2 if (right) notes are not meant to be sung, why do composers bother writing them down to start with

    elegant is not excellent

  • She is clearly not coloratura, I don't know who keeps suggesting these roles to her.

  • @rekupp I don't know who suggested to her she's a singer.

  • I have to admit that Netrebko here was 10000 times better than i thought she would be. brava

  • Beautiful!

  • ES BRMA , VERDAD, PUES NO TIENE GRACIA,

  • Es broma ¡, verdad ?, pues no tiene gracia

  • OMG she was perfect! I cried watching her...Again! :-)

  • where was that????

  • @KathrynARyder well, she just became a mother :p cut her some slack

  • NO HIGH C???? PITTY! REST IS BEAUTIFUL!!! :)

  • Is this a Met production?

  • @powe2550 yeah... Two years ago... *-*

  • I'm shivering. She is beyond words. I seriously can't think of a strong enough adjective for her perfect voice!

  • Singing is not all about belting. This is just pure magic beautiful every note from start to finish.

  • Haha people are so fixated with legends. Judge people by their own merits and not by what other singers did!

  • She is getting a bit chubby.

  • not that that bad but her jaw is getting on my nerves, see all of her performances and you'll see what i am talking about

  • ah don't run down the stairs, heavy lucia!

  • not everyone should do roles like this. She's not really a Lucia kinda girl. It's like if Renee Fleming ever did Lucia. Just isn't a good role. Not that I don't love Anna and Renee, just better roles they can sing. You need to be slightly deranged to do roles like this. That's why Dessay and Sutherland were awesome. The best Lucia would have to be Sutherland. But Diana Damrau would be right up there also.

  • How come you didn't add in "Il dolce Suono"? Shame on you, she did it amazing.. the latter half of the scene isn't as great as the way she did that aria..

  • Excellent singing! Excellent staging! I see some ignorant comments here, but I've heard hundreds of the best singers LIVE and Netrebko's voice is among the five most beautiful I've heard! I repeat what I've said regarding other posts: If you've heard a recording of a singer, you've heard a recording; you have NOT heard the singer's voice.

  • she does not attack the last note...am i dreaming

  • non mette nessuna paura come un pò Lucia dovrebbe fare in questo pezzo...e quando fa la giravolta finale sembra olympia non una che ha appena ammazzato il marito ed è impazzita

  • Grande urlatrice, poco phatos.

  • B R A V A

    grazie coloraturfan!

  • Love both Anna Netrebko and Natalie Dessay as Lucia.

For me they are the two best singing this role in the 21st century.

Interpretations are different but both are excellent.

  • beautiful voice, beautiful face...

  • 74 are deaf ...... and stupid!

  • I saw this opera in Berlin, really great, never thought i'd like it :') it was quite funny though, the actress who played Lucia was like half a meter taller than the brother, Enrico, who was black too.. Just like heavymetal guys that wears pink clothing on stage, it's kinda ridiculous..:p

  • The 'hatred' simply does not exist - the truth is, she does not sing AS WELL AS others, like Damrau, like Devia, even like Dessay in her hey day in these coloratura roles.

Her high notes are flimsy, the coloratura smudged...

    That's not 'hatred', but obervations.

  • omg this was splendid

  • @Gothic31841 There seem to be an unlimited supply of YT trolls insulting both Netrebko and Dessay. I don't know, they may be the same people. I strongly suspect that most of them are people who want to say shocking things to be noticed, but who wouldn't do so in real life because there they are rejected or thrown out on their ears. I personally am a big Dessay fan, but I hate seeing people, who probably aren't really fans of Dessay, insulting Netrebko... who has a wonderful voice and appearance

  • Netrebko's Lucia is fabulous but I hate how they keep putting her in the 19th century, which is not the setting for Donizetti's Lucia, which is set in Scotland in the 1500's. For instance, there's a line in the opera in which Mary Stewart (Maria Stuarda) is mentioned. She had been dead for ages by the time women and men were wearing tuxedos and bustle gowns. The guests at this wedding look party guests from DIE FLEIDERMAUS. Lucia isn't from 1870's London or Vienna LOL

  • @OperaMystery80 I agree. what is the point. This is one opera where the external atmosphere is very important, why mess with it.

  • Still a classic!

  • This is truly defining what beauty is.

  • @sweettyo bad acting and terrible singing?

  • @nailycai u clearly know nothing of opera or operatic singing if you do not see this as art

  • Although vocally Netrebko sounds far better than Dessay, having watched Dessay on this same set in her production she has a far more believable performance than Netrebko. The Dessay histrionics on stage are far more convincing than Netrebko's but even though Netrebko does not attempt the E flat, and I take my hat off to her for that, her vocal line was far superior to Dessay's. Brava Netrebko.

  • @MrAndredekock - Dessay has lost her tiny voice long time ago. If you think if it, Dessay is the same in all of her arias; her acting is pathetic. At the MET Dessay's voice can hardly reach row 20. I cannot even begin to compare Anna's brilliant performance with Desaay's neurotic presentation of Lucia. Not to mention Anna's vocal superiority to all of the living sopranos.

  • Those who can, sing. Those who cannot, bitch.. .

  • Every performer gives this role their special touch. although she does not come on as strong as Natalie Dessay, her performance is believeable because it seems like she is in a shocked dreamlike state. The glass harmonica gave the scene a nice touch as well, for that sound was usually associated with madness. I appreciated it that she respected the flute duo, I found it disconcerting to listen to it a capella with NDessay. Great Job.

  • Attractive; not beautiful voice and as is so often the case with singers of the post Romantic era, she just manages the passage work.

  • I personally prefer other singers to Netrebko BUT this is actually very good. I do not understand comments about how bad the cadenza here is and the lack of coloratura skills. Artistically, I find her interpretation more dreamy than insane but obviously that's a matter of personal perception. Technically, she has flaws and so have other singers. There is none who has it all. Full marks for Netrebko in this particular performance. Many listeners should just enjoy the music instead of bashing.

  • I can't understand people saying they like this! It's not about hating her... ok, I don't like her at all, I generally find her boring and mediocre, it's just my opinion, but come on, be honest... in this video the cadenza with the flute is just horrible, she can't absolutely do coloratura, and her Casta Diva sounded even worse. She is a lyric soprano, or maybe a spinto, her voice doesn't have a bit of agility, belcanto and coloratura are not things for her as they weren't for Tebaldi...

  • @3F93 Darling, get a life. And just for you to know, Casta Diva is included neither in this video nor Lucia as such.

  • @raaadja99 I've included Casta Diva in my comment because it's another aria of belcanto coloratura, like Lucia's, and I've read comments mentioning that too. Another aria that Netrebko can't sing, in fact.

I already have a life, don't worry, but I'd like to advise you to get a bit of musical taste and objectivity: Netrebko CAN'T sing this, her coloratura is just a mess, it doesn't sound natural and right as it should. Try to listen to Callas or Sutherland to get a real Lucia.

  • @3F93 If you want an impecable etenernal great lucia then you must listen to Edita Gruberova, she will always be the greatest in in this opera and also in Norma. Even now at her age she manages to do this whole opera perfect. I saw her last year in Vienna State Opera and she was beyond this world wiht a 10 minutes standing ovation. The opera had to almost stop because the reception of the audience was unbelievable as well as her performance.

  • @3F93 estoy de acuerdo...pero ella quiere parecerse a maria callas... ni lucia, ni pasquale, ni adina, son para su voz.

  • so tender and beautiful!

  • i agree that the coloratura doesn't suit her but the to me she sounds tender and confused, which seems to fit

  • I thinking taking the Eb down an octave actually sounded better than the high Eb, it was more...it gave more to the atmosphere if you ask me

  • just because someone compares her to other singers doesn't make them "haters."

She has a beautiful voice, but bel canto is not her forte. she would probably be an awesome "Norma." Love to hear her sing Casta Diva.

  • @ericscam2 Norma by Bellini is also bel canto and unfortunatly she dropped this role just having done an artist's dab in two off concerts. As far as I know she's going to perform Anna Bolena at the Met this April. Don't miss..Cheers!

  • Ok. voice is too dark. not a very agile voice. the bel canto is slushy. way too careful and cautious. Sills is still the best Lucia ever. Callas second.

  • @ericscam2 No, no one is first or second. Every great soprano is unique and Netrebko's definitly one of them.

  • @spqrmor I agree on your comment

  • Comment removed

  • I love Netrebko's timbre...I honestly can't tell if the coloratura's difficult for her, or if it's just that she has a different kind of timbre than Joan Sutherland did...Maybe bel canto isn't my absolute favorite thing to hear Netrebko in (her finest role is Antonia in LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN, in my opinion) but I still enjoy her singing of the bel canto roles.

  • multipass !!!!

  • Anna, you are great singer and great beauty--but NOT a coloratura singer--stick with Verdi. Your voice is simply too heavy--you sound like Lucia's mother. Folks, go to Ruth Ann Swenson's posts for real coloratura--not counterfeit as we have here.

  • Her interpretation of this musically is the best I have seen. I love the decrescendo into the highest notes it's lovely and so difficult. I hate when they belt them out. That's not bel canto.

  • most commentarys are...hmm....i think 99.999 Percent havent done Music on that level. but its ok in some way. But in the end...its sad. Truely Sad. !

  • I would pay money to watch this live!!!

Anna has a very rich, thick and audible voice (I have seen her live acts) and it's a miracle that she manages to do even this much of calature... you simply can not get enough of her when she sings or acts.

  • How MUCH better Anna’s brilliant singing and acting is than of that vagrant, pathetic, stray cat Natalie Dessay! Who in the right mind would believe that this neurotic, phony girl inspired a great love? Dessay’s interpretations are always boring and predictable; her style never changes, no matter what she performs. Just watch her Sempre Libera – it is nauseating. What a pity Dessay is corrupting Lucia at the MET this year again.

  • @09avenger LOL. I agree. Dessay is a stray cat! hilarious

  • Sills is still the best ever. Tone, agility, understanding, phrasing, dynamics, acting...and the most incomparably beautiful instrument on top of it. A true bel canto.

  • @ericscam2 Sills was a great "soprano"... that's all!!.

  • @ericscam2 She is =)

  • Sorry, i won't Tosca myself any where, but it is only a matter of time you Violetta Valary yourself, but it won't be phthisis.

  • i love bel canto. i have a lot of DVDs with famous bel canto sopranos Anderson, Serra, Aliberti, Devia, Bonfadelli, Polito...i love Netrebko singing bel canto. Am i crazy?

  • @gman20101 No!! Lei ama il belcanto con gli occhi, in più non ha nominato altri soprano eccelsi nella Lucia...vada indietro negli anni...

  • @numetutelare netrebko's bel canto was good in julietta in i capuleti e i montecchi with didonato romeo. It was funny - pregnant julietta

  • It's too bad that people are so focused on her few downfalls that they don't realize all the things that she is doing right.

This stuff is REALLY hard to sing you guys!!!!

    Have you tried it???

If not, then don't be an uninformed asshole! LOL!!!! You'll always be able to find something wrong if you look hard enough!

  • Why many people doesn't like her performance? I know it is not the best ever performed throughout history.. but her performance here is not bad at all..

  • She has a very beautiful voice, but its so heavy. It weighs the coloratura sections down and makes them sluggish.

  • This is great, but it's still not as good as Diana Damrau's performance. Diana is a better actress and she can handle the coloratura better.

  • @sfpurdie With all my respect to ms.Damrau your opinion about Netrebko's singing is very subjective and still remains just an allegation, no less no more...How can anyone to compare Pierre-August Renoire with Oscar-Claude Monet ???

  • @spqrmor oh, i agree with you there. I certainly can't claim to be an expert, as i am still young and haven't seen many of the great performers of previous generations. That is also the beauty of this type of format. We can express and compare our ideas and opinions of beautiful performances like this. Henceforth, i will begin my comments with "in my opinion."

  • @sfpurdie Well...all an opinions are welcome here if there is a yot of ballanced criticism to help to an actrees to improve something in her singing as well in her acting. Judgemental ones can find with ease an imperfections in DD's singing also.Does it mean that she 's got into a mess of that? LOL! Believe me you're witness of the great soprano as well as an actress since Callas.Good luck in your research. Bon chance!

  • Wow people need to calm down, it's all a matter of opinion as to your view on Anna Netrebko. Personally, I like her, but not as much as I like some other singers. I do think Diana Damrau was better suited to the role but they both did it pretty well

  • She is a gifted performer and a well trained singer, but this is SO not the role for her. I know she didnt include the high Eb (which I know is optional but still) and she just needs to sing different roles the Lucia and Elvira etc.

  • She really got better!!!

  • Can anyone tell me what act this is in?

  • @charstar1989 Third Act. Scene 1

  • ...stick to a repertoire where these qualities would help interpret what the composer wrote, instead of a repertoire where her shortcomings become painfully obvious?

  • Why on earth does this woman sing operas such as "Lucia di Lammermoor" and "I puritani" that demand quite a lot in the coloratura department when she couldn't sing a simple gruppetti accurately with a gun to her head? In her studio version of the duet from "I puritani" with Florez she has only ONE phrase containing coloratura and she doesn't sing it correctly - and this in a STUDIO recording! She has a beautiful voice, is physically beautiful and has a good stage presence so why not...

  • Bah... Tremolo so much that you can't ever hear what notes she singing...

  • @humangeorge you are a fool. This performance was regarded as "Great performances at the MET", - this is indeed a great performance.

  • @Flamingopera you probably forgot that this is a mad scene, do you expect her to be adequate? This is great acting and great singing. This performance was regarded as "Great performances at the MET"

  • I believe that this Lucia really can kill somebody

  • She sings beautiful and how she is always so expressive. That's why she is the greatest!

  • Her "alfin son tua" at 05:35 is so...beautiful and warm. ♥

  • I love the part from 7:40 up to the end!!!

  • I never thought, madness could be so attractive - bravo Anna!

  • Gorgeous singing! I've always loved her repertoire.

  • @Luck1au.... Ummmmm ok.. I was just going by the comments i've been reading here on YT about Anna Netrebko, I really don't see the need to call me an idiot.

  • Honestly, everybody bashes her for having been so hyped by the media and I am not a great fan of hers either but you gotta hand it to her - this was not bad at all. Great line, very good trills, very involved and giving, willing to take risks. She gave it all she had. I am impressed.

  • @Lindow I have to agree with you. I am not a big fan of hers either, but this was not bad at all. The woman is beautiful, and I love to watch her, but I just don't always like what I hear. Good observation

  • @Lindow What he had to give was not very much!

  • @NEBESHIKU You proved to be a tremendous hater of Netrebko. Why then listening to her and posting here and there your toyterrier's biting comments? Dismissed!

  • @spqrmor and this from a little bitch like you? JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA You can bark all you want but Netrebko still is shit, you can enjoy her.

  • @NEBESHIKU Barking you not me, little sick retard!

  • @spqrmor JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA I knew you were a retard when you defended Netrebko, little bitch keep making me laugh! Your pathetic barking makes me feel pity for you! JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA

  • @NEBESHIKU Bua-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha !!!!!! NEBESHIKU ,you are CRETIN OF THE CENTUTY !!!

  • @spqrmor No, that's your dad! He got that tittle after he belived your mother that he was your father!

  • @NEBESHIKU How stupid and ignorant you are with all you comments on YT! You are welcome fruitcake , let everyone see how LOW you are!

  • @spqrmor Not as low as you: the bastard child of your whore mother! Again, no matter what you say, it will not make Netrebko's singing any good!

  • @NEBESHIKU NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY LITTLE ASSHOLE , NETREBKO IS FAMOUS AND EXCELLENT. YOU CAN'T CHANGE ANYTHING BY YOUR COHERENT INSULTINGS. SHUT UP IMPOTENT!

  • @spqrmor Yes, and also coca cola is famous for big sales and that doesn't change the fact that it's liquid shit! Impotent!!!! JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA Sorry dear, i'm not interrested in your nasty cunt, even your dildo goes limp when it sees your face and cunt!

  • Comment removed

  • @NEBESHIKU wow am i really reading this filth? ... here???? .... wow if i wanted to read this kind of ignorance i would hang up my opera glasses and break out the hot wings, nachos and foam fingers and become a member of the ignorant, desperate, and moronic monday night football tribe .... sad. Do us a favor ignoramus ... go Tosca youself off a parapet!!!

  • @NEBESHIKU Really, you are such a hater of Netrebko why do you listen to her then, asshole?! For you it's not enough to poopoo on just several videos?! It's YOU who have too much SHIT then! LOL I know why: you are just a pervert, a masochist who gets sexual pleasure from listening to the voices you don't like! LOL But it's only YOUR problem, dear! Not Netrebko's! Just and advice: for a change have a rest and listen to the stuff you don't consider shit! Perhaps you'll like such experience too?LOL

  • @serenaluce JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA! JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA!

  • @NEBESHIKU Ja in German is yes! So, I take it as a "yes" answer that you agree with me and will listen to the stuff you like for a change. There's a good boy! LOL Happy listening to you! And good luck at your doctor's appointment! Hope the doctor helps you with your diarea problem and you will shit much less on YT! LOL

  • @Lindow Thank you for pointing the out =)

  • Anna Netrebko - Lucia di Lammermoor - Mad Scene - 2009 coloraturafan 2,269 videos SubscribeEdit Subscription Loading...

  • she definitely doesn't have the coloratura ability to do full justice, but the interpretation is quite effective. well supported voice. although i wish the coloratura weren't so obviously difficult for her...

  • @diuscorvus Insomma é fuori ruolo...molto semplice.

  • @diuscorvus Donizzeti wrote the role not necessarily for coloratura.

  • OMG I HATE HER WITH SUCH A PASSION!

  • @michelebruno...Really? I don't know if your from Italy or if keep up with Anna but she gets VERY mixed acceptance here in youtube/ America. For me personally June Anderson gives the best Luica.

  • Dear Anna - your marvelous, fabulous, lustrous voice is such a treat to listen!

Thank you for helping me to get through the day. I am so happy every time I listen to your magnificent performances. Good bless you!

  • This is a great Lucia! This performance was broadcasted in US on public TV many times. Her fabulous voice is wonderfully harmonized with orchestra and especially with flute. Amazing acting too – !!! Gorgeous, thank you Anna!

  • I love Anna and Natalie in this role such a contrast :) Something that really pisses me off is, how do people really know what Lucia is supposed to sound like (besides the notes in the score or the voice type preference) or characterize its the artist's taste if you don't respect it don't complain so obnoxiously, its annoying. If you don't like her interpretation take your comments to a bash site :[ If you more than 70% of people who saw this video liked it....

  • @classicalgal14 Thank you.

  • @classicalgal14 her voice is a little hard on the ears to some... not everyone loved Callas either... personally I like both Netrebko and Dessay, but certain operas that they've sung, I prefer Gheorghiu the most. Based on the opera or song, I have a certain voice that I like the most.

    Carmen: Callas,

    Tosca: Gheorghiu,

    Lucia: Netrebko,

Lucia Borgia (whatever it's called): Sutherland,

    Lakme: Callas,

    Giulio Cesare's Sesto: Magdalena Kozena

    you get the picture

  • @dangmills what about Violetta?

My favourites are Callas (1955) Gheorghiu (1994) and Netrebko (with Villazòn).

  • @papagena92 Violetta belongs to Virginia Zeani and Angela Gheorghiu

  • @papagena92 watch?v=qmgdw73ZV3k

  • I agree with Henry and Visi ... except to say if you like Dessay's performance in this Opera you should do the world a favor and Tosca yourself of the parapet !!! Just saying !!!!

  • boring!i saw natalie dessay in the same opera in 2007 at the met,and her acting is much better then this.netrebko is singing not bad,but in the fist act she is singing like lucias mother, without emotions and totally boring.

so in my opinion dessay was 10 times better than the overrated netrebko!

  • @henry10011966

I used to adore Dessay... until I saw Netrebko. Dessay has a very small small voice. Now this is boring!

  • @VISITRUSSIA

ok,when you want a far better voice and performance then look for diana damrau,

she played the same role at the met,at the same time as mrs netrebko.

  • @henry10011966 I did and couldn\t find here a better performance. Only her voice reccord. And honestly... I didn't like it.

To my taste (key word is my taste) Anna's voice is so much bigger and very pleasant to MY ears, both in low and high key. I think it is very unique.

  • @VISITRUSSIA

i don't want to argue with you about your and my different taste.

anna is a beautiful singer, but i don't like her lucia.her amina and her mimi are wonderful and i'm happy that we have a lot of different voices to hear great operamusic.just enjoy!!

  • @henry10011966

Now this is the right answer!!! Silly argue about different tastes. Got blesses all singers to deliver us variety to choose from ! =)

  • You should probably state the aria title: Spargi d'amore pianto

  • Damrau should have done the recording!

  • Some called her a whore... She married for love.

Others said she is a comet that will extinguish. She keeps going strong.

Most said she is worth nothing. She does Lucias for sold out capacities at the Met!

She has venomous detractors and ardent admirers... she divides opera freaks...

Fellow opera friends... can it be that this is the stuff of the "real" thing...??

Madonna mia, forgive what I said... it was just a slip of my mind... no ...no...
