These are awesome cars, but they are certainly not hybrids, since they do not store energy for later use by the traction motor. It's no different than a standard electric drive, like that used in a locomotive, with the ingenious exception that the generator's reaction torque is also used to drive the propeller shaft. In this way, only a portion of the engine's power is converted to electric power and back to mechanical power, as opposed to the 100% in a standard electric drive.
You certainly have an interesting comment, and I thank you for it, realvanman. But Jay says that this was "a 1916 version of a hybrid." Since it is utilizing both electric and gas, albeit without the batteries for storage, I think it is still safe (in a strict sense) to refer to it as a hybrid -- but your distinction is still very valid too, to distinguish it from the common hybrid today. We could also just use the term "series hybrid" -- as opposed to "parallel hybrid," as is commonly done.
Think that was early? look up Hiawatha bicycle company 1892-93 in chicago, they were in the mix with Hedstrom and Detroit electric buiding the first Early Hybrids Way back, even befor the oldsmobile electric.
Great comment. Thank you. I wouldn't be surprised if there even more than what both you and Begley have mentioned. Human ingenuity is much greater than what our wonderful corporations and our gov'ts would want us to believe, or indulge in ourselves. Being more self-sufficient, more efficient, seems to be the last thing that they want!! :-)
What I don't understand? with all hat cash of his? And a huge well equiped shop. Why not build some proto types for new hybrid electrics? The british are building a new, 5hp rotary engine for UAV's why not couple one to the gennerator from a honda 110-220Volt home ,and job site gernarator asembly? and replace the battery pack of a hybrid with this little 33ccm engine, for the cost of a weed wacker fuel buget, you could then run a car!
If anyone is interested in purchasing a wind turbine. Beware of PacWind in CA. Yes the one Ed Begley is associated with.
They hired a distributor who took my $12,400.00 and never installed the system.
PacWind dissolved the company PacWind Technology LLC, the company who hires their distributors / dealers so now they claim they have no responsibility for the company that stole my money.
